To be completely honest I really liked the intro of Mass Effect 2, we were basically "back in time", two years prior to the actual start of the story, of its "current events". It was not mentioned word-by-word in the prologue that we were seeing the Normandy SR-1 being attacked "two years ago", but that's what it was really, we were seeing and experiencing (since we played as Shepard for a brief moment during that intro) events that occurred two years before ME2 starts. I would like to suggest something similar for ME3, but it wouldn't require any playable portion, in fact it'd be better if it just remained unplayable, since Shepard wouldn't be there. In fact no one from the current events of the ME2's story would be present in the intro I'm thinking about.

Basically, when the game starts, the intro would show us the very last moments (across various "stages", over a period of time) of the surviving Prothean scientists on Ilos. I was thinking that keeping it silent would maintain a form of mystery about them (while hearing some atmospheric music playing in the background), but then I thought that perhaps hearing them speak their original language (with subtitles, to obviously understand what they're saying, especially if we're supposed to understand important information out of their otherwise incomprehensible speech) during the cut-scenes would create a better sense of authenticity about them (after all, hearing them speak plain English would just be silly). But then creating a new language, or just a few alien words to form a few sentences here and there might represent a loss of time for BioWare, something unnecessary. I'm not quite sure on how I would "present" them myself really, but I would definitely like to see in visual canonized form what exactly happened to those Protheans specifically.

The VI, Vigil, explained the most important information that had been kept in its memory/archive but we certainly lack the details, not to mention that the Prothean scientists' fate, that they starved to death on the Citadel, is a mere hypothesis, we have no proof, and while it was perhaps amusing to speculate about it since the past years I think that it should now be time for the story to spit out the details and canonize things up a bit. Show us what happened to them on the Citadel, and if they indeed starved to death you guys at BioWare wouldn't necessarily have to actually show us their moments of suffering, despair and starvation, but just make it clear that it was indeed the case, perhaps by showing us one or more of those Protheans (and with the subtitles, if they do speak it out) confirming the situation as they explore the Citadel and discover what remains in it for them to be able to survive and do whatever they are there for, or just something else that would be "presentable" on-screen.

I don't know how long such an intro should last. I was also thinking that the intro might be better shown in multiple parts during the course of the game (if it'd be just too long to show as an actual introduction before the game really starts), and I thought of one way to do it, but of course it might well end up being a very bad idea, but anyway, here is goes...

You know that Prothean artifact that is retrieved in the Project Firewalker pack? The Prothean Site mission. Well that artifact still has unknown capabilities and purposes. So what if after one "part" of the intro is shown that later during the game Shepard can have new revelations, new visions, when touching/interacting with the artifact? And of course those visions would slowly but surely complete all the pieces of the puzzle as the game progresses (similarly to how the fate of the Protheans in general was revealed to the players in ME1 during the course of the game, via more and more detailed visions that Liara also helped analyse), but not until the end of the game obviously. The goal of such an intro (or such a vision) would simply be to show us what happened (with details, the necessary ones that is) to those Protheans and just how they managed to alter and temper with that signal that the Keepers had to send through the Citadel to unlock it for the Reapers to come from dark space, and so on (up to how exactly they survived long enough to actually do that work, and perhaps how they died as well).

If done in the form of a vision that Shepard would see in the game then of course that information would be official for the entire scientific community in the game's universe, if of course Shepard "reveals" it. If simply done as an actual introduction without the interaction with any artifacts during the game itself, then it would just be for us, the gamers, for the sake of making things official and stopping the speculation that simply leads nowhere.

Many things could be "canonized" in ME3, that's for sure, but that specifically, what happened to those Protheans (at least that, if not more of what happened to the Protheans in general when the invasion actually started) is something I'm afraid we'll never get to see at any point during ME3, which is why I'm offering this humble idea. You know, instead of the cliché introduction that I think we might end up with, along the lines of immediately finding ourselves on Earth ready to interact and play (or just seeing it) Shepard's trial only to see it abruptly interrupted somehow because Reapers just arrived in the Sol System (or near it, or ready to go for it from the nearest Relay, or whatever)... really I think that the introduction for ME3 should send us back in time when the destruction had been done, when the only survivors in the entire Galaxy capable to do anything were those Prothean individuals who basically saved us all by buying us precious time because their work ultimately succeeded.

Think about it, without them the signal would have been sent, the Citdadel would have unlocked and ME1's conclusion would have been pretty simple, the start of a new cycle of extinction, and the sequel if any would have happened 50,000 years or so after that. Had it not been for those Protheans and what they did, the trilogy wouldn't be, and ME1 would have been the only planned title covering the necessary events in that game's universe and, yeah, that's about it, but it was written and such a way that it allowed everything we've been playing so far, obviously, and so I think that those darn heroes merit some credit, show us what happened to them, how they did their work, thus also showing us what Protheans look like, and in turn stopping speculation about those things specifically, and perhaps more.

Just my two cents, but I don't really expect anything like that. At this point in time even if the game has been delayed for approximately four or five extra months I do believe that the "introduction" for the game has been completed and most likely isn't anything about that. I'm not hoping for the impossible and I'm staying realistic, but if not presentable as the introduction of the game due to the existence of an already completed one then please, somewhere, somehow, during the events of the game, allow us to see what happened to them, please.

Thanks.
