i play a vanguard and i prefer assault rifles over shotguns.
i dislike the notion that anyone not strictly using the shotgun is playing the vanguard wrong. i use pull and shockwave far more than charge. i still use it but i dont only use charge.

i hope this "shotgun only" attitude hasnt ruined my favorite class in ME3 by specializing it so much for shotguns that anything else sucks. i love my SMG/ assault rifle focused vanguard.

Curious... unless it's the revenant, what do you need charge for if you use an assault rifle?

I rarely actually used my shotgun as a vanguard. Not really sure why, but I guess I just love my Kassa Locust.<3

EDIT: Charge isn't just about getting into point-blank range. You can charge one enemy to flank another, or to get away from another. Having a mid-to-long-range weapon on the side is always a bonus. I question the point of using an assault rifle when you already have an SMG, but I suppose I can't argue with the merits of having two good mid/long range weapons on you...

"Don't try this at home, I'm a professional Russian" made me laugh. That's awesome.

Assault rifles at point blank range? That's what the claymore is for. Charge, and BOOM. If you use the vindicator, you don't need to move from where you are. Just shoot them in the head.

Why play Vanguard then? Vanguards are all about Charging around and blasting people's heads off - if you're going to stay put most of the time you're probably better off playing a true caster (Adept or Engineer) or a sniper (Soldier or Infiltrator) imo.

Yes, that's kinda what I don't really understand. Vanguards with assault rifles. Hmmm. Or vanguards with sniper rifles. Even more hmmmm. Now I dont use ONLY charge. I like shockwave a lot, too. Shockwaving people and then gunbutting them to death is wicked fun. (I play on veteran by the way, I know this won't work in higher difficulties)

I see vanguards having long range weapons as a resource just in case there are enemies out of reach (inside turrets for example, or Warden Kuril), not as their primary weapon.

I personally love my matlock in point black range. mostly because aim sucks and if I need to readjust it, its less of an ammo waste. and it burns down heavy mechs like there's no tomorrow. I play on easy difficulties though and pause a lot, but still - matlock just feels a lot more forgiving then claymore while allowing to charge around.

You still have shotguns just not the claymore, your shotgun charge is at most a smidge less effective and you gain really med/long range attacks.  And the thread is not about assault rifles in general but the totally broken Mattock.  Point blank mattock shots destroy targets.  You can get the kill off almost as fast as the claymore since you shoot as fast a you push a button.

Still I always go claymore.

AA12 sucks compared to Saiga IMHO.

Not familiar with the AA12, but the Saiga is a nice weapon.  Manual of arms on the Saiga is a bit odd, but AK derived rifles have always been slightly quirky anyway.  Very reliable and the gas operated action really tames some of the nasty recoil out of the 12 gauge shell.
