[quote]lummoxybez wrote...I always see Keldorn as an idiot fanatic, and in no way representative of the way a Paladin should be played. If any of my players in P&P RPGs played a Pally that way they would pretty soon become fallen Paladins....

(sorry, not sure how to get the "quote" to work right)

As an old P&P D&D DM myself I don't see your reasoning for the above lummoxybez.

I see the situation with Viconia as any Paladin's quandry.  He would be torn between his own "broad brush" prejudices toward the Drow (which many of their representatives have certainly brought upon them by attacking the very society he is sworn to defend) and his strong belief that ordered society is the best way to bring about the most good for the most people.  He might well step in in the name of Law and Order, then again, he might leave the situation to the fates based on his hatred of evil.  He certainly wouldn't step in to save her for her sake no matter how enticing she might be.

Paladins believe in Law and order, society, and goodness.  Interestingly the dialogue between Minsc, Keldorn and the PC in the "Viconia at the burning stake scenario" actually goes counter to what I'd expect.  Minsc is good for goodness sake withoud regard to how it's achieved but in this case he pleads for Viconia based on the fact that she's being executed by "mob rules."  Keldorn, who you'd think would take the Lawful (orderly) path turns away and even encourages you to let her burn.

As a leader, this is your challenge. As a Paladin, Lawful and Good, I have handled the situation both ways - and felt guilty either way.

In a manner of speaking,   this is quandry you face with Anomyn Delryn also.  The Lawful path or justice as his father would have it.

As a Paladin or Lawful Good PC you are asked to negotiate both in character and with regard to your chosen alignment.

There is probably some interpretation space in the paladin debate, but in my P&P games a Paladin could not run around and slaughter goblin babies even if it would be the law and a drow is more redeemable in the FR than a goblin i suppose. If Viconia isn't rightfully judged guilty of crimes which is the case in BG 1&2 there is neither good nor lawful in lynching her or letting her get lynched.

I'm reminded how my Chevalier fell at the end of BG 1 as he killed Sarevok's mentor. I felt it was not justified at the time but see it as adequate consequence now. And he is known to be responsible for much suffering.

In Mask of the Betrayer, Kaelyn the Dove is Lawful Good, even though she abandoned the faith of her god and actively pursues to take down the Wall of the Faithless, and hence threatens the very basis of the synergy between god and worshiper. She's no paladin, though, but a cleric.

I think in the end, "lawful" means living according to a strict personal code. For a paladin, this personal code is the dogma of the patron diety. Society's law is followed as long as it doesn't interfere with the personal code.
