...which decisions would you consider 'canon' to the story?

Without considering Mass Effect 2 default to be 'canon', what would you expect to see in a Mass Effect movie? Would you expect Shepard to be male or female? Would you expect Shepard to save the council or kill them off?

Please understand that this isn't about what you WANT to see, nor about what you played your Shepard as, this is about what you would expect to see if ME1 was made into a movie.

For instance, if I went and saw the movie and Shepard killed off the council, I'd be grossly disappointed. Not because that's one of the choices I would or wouldn't have made, but because I expect a movie version of him to be more heroic and less calculating. I don't feel a heroic movie version of Shepard would be so cold as to kill off the Council, no matter how annoying they are.

Hmm thats a tricky one. I'd definitely expect him to make paragon decisions such as save the council or let Shiala live. But every great hero i.e. Indiana Jones has a dark streak that makes him a badass. So i'd expect the rachni queen to get gassed and I would expect Shepard to talk renegade to some characters ( Saren, Harkin, Benezia).  They would have to find a balance between outright hero and unlikeable badass.

I suspect a movie that would sell well would need to be more a heroic epic than a story about an anti-hero, but he'd need to be a conflicted character.  I think the best presentation would be for him to have the Colonist/Ruthless background.  With that in mind, he'd mostly act paragon, but there'd always be that undercurrent of the cold killing machine right under the surface, and it'd break free on occasion to the detriment of those opposing him.

In an ME1 movie I think that....

Shepard would not kill the Rachni queen
He would not kill Shiala
He would save the Council
He would not kill Wrex
On the Virmire decision, I don't know that it'd matter as long as a paragon Shepard was torn up over the choice
He might kill Fist.
He might kill Rana Thanoptis.  This one is less likely than Fist.
He might paragon-ize Garrus, but he'd carry through with killing Dr Saleon on Garrus's personal mission.
He'd get renegadey in his conversations with the Council, especially Mr Airquotes.
He'd pick Anderson to sit on the Council over Udina.

He'd let the hostages on X57 die so that he could kill Balak.  This would be a very dark, ugly moment where that Ruthless background got out.

Balak's partner that said he was just there for a quick 'slave grab' would get a bullet in the head too.

In an ME2 movie I think that....

The Collector base is tough.  I think as an Alliance soldier, his instinct would be to keep it for study, but he doesn't trust TIM.  I think I'd do a hybrid of ME2's ending for a movie.  Shepard would keep the collector base, but in the epilogue of the movie, he'd find out that TIM was doing something mad sciencey with it and tell TIM to ****** off.

Not sure how he'd handle Sidonis.  I could see him talking to Sidonis long enough to learn that Sidonis had done it to save his own skin and then let Garrus take the shot.  If he did it this way, he'd feel guilty later, not for Sidonis's death, but for how this might affect his best friend, Garrus.

He'd definitely shove the merc out the window.
He'd kill the Batarians holding Daniel hostage.
He'd break the merc's neck on Miranda's LM
He'd convince Miranda to talk to Oriana.
He'd keep the genophage data.
Not sure how he'd handle Maleon.  Might let Mordin shoot him.
He'd save the workers on Zaeed's LM.
He'd head butt Uvenk.
He'd prevent Tali from getting exiled.
He'd talk Jack into letting Aresh live.
He'd insist Kasumi destroy the gray box.
He'd secure Ronald Taylor for the Alliance.
He'd set the Weyrloc guard on fire
He'd threaten Elias Kelham with a pistol
He'd let Garrus shoot Harkin in the leg
He'd also generally take most of the renegade interrupts where mercs were involved.
