Can't they use a DnD setting without using the ruleset? That way they can pick the best ruleset possible? I'm not that familiar with DnD or their rulesets.

I'm thinking it's more of a licensing and legal issue myself. They are unlikely to be able to use any ruleset aside from the latest one. I remember during Icewind Dale II development, they had to change the ruleset so that it would be compatible with the latest edition.

But they could probably use 4e as a base and stack a bunch of house rules on top for the game. Pretty much every D&D cRPG has had elements modified to fit the game better. The combat (real time), being the most obvious example.

(hence why the console games Dark Alliance were given the Baldur's Gate game despite not having much to do with the original BG games at all)

To be fair the "Dark Alliance" games had more to do with "Baldur's Gate" than "Shadows of Amn" or "Throne of Bhaal". A third of the first game took place in the city, and the entirety of DA2 was centered in or around it. I thought those games made decent use of local FR lore, despite taking a few liberties. Do not get me wrong however, I take your point.

I don't want a sequel but I wouldn't mind another Obsidian game that took an issue like death and resurrection in Torment and gave it the same kind of in depth treatment that was integral to the story.

Sadly, that project would never get past any current-day publisher because at its very heart is the refusal to pander to the action-focused instant-gratification crowd that make up the dominant demographic (according to Marketing, anyways) on HD consoles in North America. I know, there's the PC, there's other territories where this doesn't apply, but publishers never see beyond North America.

I know this is old as hell but what if this actually happened?!

For people who don't know people have donated over 1.2 million dollars to Double Fine which could lead to a possible Pyschonauts 2!.

Hmmmm. I admit, I’ve got Kickstarter fever now. I feel like a bunch of doors suddenly appeared in game development.

I see what you did there, Mr. Avellone.

Hey, if that's how it's gotta start, that works. Either he's trolling us hard, or it may be the real deal. The question in my mind would be is this going towards a full retail game, or a downloadble-only game with a significantly cheaper budget? I'm far from the biggest PS:T fan in the world, but it's got my attention though.

I so hope that happens. I'd invest 100 USD in that without knowing anything else if MCA and crew are going to work on it.

Not going to happen. They don't have the license + 4th edition D&D screwed over the entire setting.

I never played PST but it sounds more interesting than their South Park game, at least.

World's greatest understatement. It takes many parts of RPGs(or games in general) that are overused and hated, and toss them out the window. The game begins with a death scene, rats are hard as all hell, zombies are sympathetic characters, etc. Chris Avellone wanted so called "reversals" from what he'd said in a youtube interview. As a friend of mine also pointed out, it's a game that doesn't define your possible choices by your previous choices throughout the game i.e. Mass Effect 2. Most of it is defined by stats themselves that you've put in.

It's highly regarded and considered one of the best RPGs of all time. Also, you're frankenstein with dreadlocks.

Should you consider getting it, it's a mere $10 for the game on GoG. Just make sure to get the fixpack/tweakpack/unfinished business, and you've got a very nice game. I still haven't finished it quite yet, about 1/3 done.

It's kind of hard for me to go back to the earlier games. As in, I can't. I've tried with Baldur's Gate and Morrowind, but the gap is just too large from what I'm used to, having come to video games in the latter days.

I want Chris Avellone to write a Fallout novel. He tweeted, "I'd write and read it - I'd read any Fallout novel I could get my hands on."

That. If Obsidian could get their hands on the license, then I could hope. 4e did change the Planes substantially, but Sigil is still around; albeit without a heavy Faction presence. They were all kicked out as a result of events in Faction War, the closing 2e splat book that gave some closure to the Planescape setting before it was cancelled. So if Avellone did revisit that setting, it would be a fairly different place. That may be a good thing, though. I wouldn't want a Torment rehash.

They do have the Icewind Dale license, and I wouldn't mind revisiting that region. The only problem is those games were dungeon crawls, so it might feel like wasted opportunity when they develop a plot heavy RPG instead.

Then again, getting to play any decent isometric old school RPG at all in this age would be friggin' badass.

It wouldn't have to be Planescape, if it was just a "game of that kind" they can count me in.

Weirdly it'd probably be better if it had modest funding such as you'd get from community funding and didn't have a console version.

"This RPG is not chasing ten million console sales" would be one hell of a selling point written on the box.

Naw. :P My suggestion would be lost in the white noise of forum regulars pitching their own vision of greatest RPG EVAH.

Fourth Edition put the horse out of its misery. The 3(,5) rules were a downhill slope with cluster****s galore. Ive played Rpgs for 23 odd years and I remember my pen and paper days fondly.

WotC would do a lucas esque catastrophy of demanding their 5th or "4,5" rules included... which would likely turn any planescape title into a "Singleplayer WoW".

I remember a Planescape setting indie game in production... mod or something for NWN. Rogue dao or something. Dont know what happend to it though.

The combat in Planescape is rough and not even as good as the BG games, but story wise its pretty incredible.

But I wouldn't be so quick to scoff at their South Park game. Admittedly, I like South Park, but from an RPG mechanics point of view, from what I've read, the game sounds pretty refreshing.

As for the whole Kickstarter thing and Obsidian, doing another Planescape would be tough considering they don't have the license. As for other games, Avellone had this on his twitter at one suggestion:

Holy ****, I didn't even think about Darklands. Good one.

INDEED.

Darklands, for those not familiar.

From the description on Good Old Games:

Prepare yourself to enter Darklands - the first realistic fantasy  role-playing game. Leading a band of four adventurers across the  sinister landscape of 15th Century Germany, you’ll face the Middle Ages  as people believed it to be: land filled with mythical beasts,  religious power-mongers, and bloodthirsty robber-knights!

Watch savage battles unfold before your eyes! Travel hundreds of miles  by land and sea from Frisian Coast to Bohemia, from the alps to Prussia, visiting over ninety cities along the way.

Your quest for fame and fortune can take you through raucous city  streets and dark mine shafts, or from a robber knight’s tower to the  terrifying Witches' Sabbath! Get ready for the astonishing wonders of a  realistic fantasy adventure in the mysterious Darklands!

I have fond memories of this game :wizard:

Darklands was one of - if not the- first RPG's I bought for the computer. They had it in a MicroProse bundle with X-Com (Thanks for eating up my childhood!), and I must have been around seven or eight. I can remember opening up the manual for the first time and it being completely over my head :P

It's great news that the most popular response was a spiritual successor to planescape torment, now I can only hope that they decide to make it.
