Is it really fair to attack the GI preview of Ashley as being dramatically oversexualized?

I don't like her new boobs. Makes me think she's going to have a body just like Miri's and I believe in the saying that variety is the spice of life.

I agree with this ... Ash should not have Miri's breasts ... Image IPB

That's just it.  I have a terrible, terrible feeling that this is her combat outfit.  Neither ME2 nor DA2 implemented any kind of work/casual change of outfits outfits.  the new policy seems to be "One Outfit to Rule Them All"  And I have heard nothing to suggest ME3 will change anything.

@ME3News Discussed squad customization with Preston (Design Lead) today actually. Still working on details.

THERE IS HOPE!

Hope isn't something I like to place my trust in because it has failed me so many times before.

Now they have to change ashleys outfit for elite midget, I mean you can't let him/her down! That would be cruel!

Elite, everytime you jump to conclusions you are proven wrong. And now you probably changed Ashley's outfit.

As long as Ashley is still Ashley I don't care what size her boobs are. Boobs are nice and all (I am a straight male after all.) but I would rather be with a woman who has a strong personality like Ashley, someone who can keep up with me intellectually and is her own person. But this is a video game and I get why they sexed her up to sell more copies just don't f@ck with her personality Bioware!

I can't accept that.  I'm tired of gaming sitting behind movies, art, and hell television in regards to story and making something meaningful (not that television is doing that now with all the reality crap).  There's more raw moments in television than you'll ever get in gaming currently.  But because it's an adolescent hobby it will forever be stuck in some playpen out of the way so people can get to more "important" stuff like "Jersey Shore" or whatever incarnation of "The Real Housewives" is in existence.

Buckling to pressure of people who can't be arsed to play or pay sufficient attention to something you created and pandering to the perceived (I say perceived because I think there are many teenage males who value a well-written story that doesn't just shove sex in their face) lowest common denominator will keep gaming where it is for the next 10, 20, 30 years.

If it works out for the better I'm all for it.

Holy flying ****, I take a nap and this thread grows 10 pages... what have I sown?

Basically, my opinion on the matter is captured quite well by Celrath, who says:

I don't get it. She has long hair and a jump suit. Why is this such a big deal?

I would add that we haven't seen enough of her outfit to judge if it's really as bad as people are saying. Then, I'm no Ashley fan so I'm probably a bit less sensitive to this.

I took a look at it and decided that she was wearing a shirt that was a bit form fitting but terribly revealing or outrageous. Aside from the open collar it's really not that much worse from the human light armors in ME1.

I see plenty of girls wearing clothes that cover less than Ashley's in the GI pic on a day to day basis. But I'm seeing hordes of people saying she's dressed like a complete **** in a catsuit or something to that effect. I don't think that response is appropriate.

(Interesting case coming from the person with Lara Croft in their avatar. It's funny to note that Lara Croft is only as well endowed as she is namely because one of the Devs on the first Tomb Raider game increased her bust size three times on the original model. Of course the rest of the team saw this and was basically like Niice!)

If you're trying to somehow attack the credibility of my position based on that (with the implication that I somehow objectify women because I appreciate the TR games) I know the history of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider pretty well. However, I think it would be a bit presumptuous for me to assume that, so I'll assume this is all in good faith.

The avatar I'm sporting is from Tomb Raider: Underworld promotional art. The Tomb Raider games switched development teams after the critical and commercial failure of TR6 (Angel of Darkness). Core Design was responsible for the first 6 games, and Crystal Dynamics has been developing them after that. One of the first things they did with the release of TR7 (Legend) was bring in the original designer of Lara Croft (Toby Gard) and refine Lara's proportions so that they were more realistic. Looking at promotional art for TR games between the two devs, you'll notice a pretty big difference.

With the upcoming TR game she's almost barely recognizable, save for the face. This has split some fans, with one camp being for the redesign and others against.

But I digress.

It's not that Ashley's new look is too "skimpy" or anything like that. Really as far as clothing/armor goes for women it's fairly modest. If she were in just a metal bikini or something, then yeah. But no Ashley really isn't being dramatically oversexualzed as there are far worse offenders in most movies and video games.

The problem is her "new look" is really out of character for her. Ashley is the type of person that wears hefty armor, and in ME1 she quite often states this. So it's not just supposed she wears heavy armor for the sake of it, her character quite literally says she does so on purpose. Most of us are assuming that this is indeed her combat gear since it vaguely does seem to be akin of light armor suits. But that's the thing. Why Ashley is wearing light armor? Ashley should be wearing heavier armor.

What I'm seeing is that there are two groups of people who have different criticisms about Ashley's design. One is like you, saying that it is out of character. I never really got to know Ashley well in my (very few) playthroughs of ME1, so that could be a very valid point.

The other group of people alleges that Ashley is wearing something that is ridiculously oversexualized, which I ill have to take issue with. If it's oversexualized, it's as oversexualized as casual attire.

Miranda's figure is okay given that we know she was basically genetically engineered to be "hot". However Ashley is suppose to be just a normal girl. (And having DDs or Fs is not the norm if you're as lean as Ashley.) I mean sure you could suppose Ashley might have gotten a boob job (really?) or is wearing a push-up Bra. But basically it's pretty plain to see her boob size was increased for the sake of the male audience.

Stock body models were used for Ashley and Kaidan in ME1. It is entirely possible that the artists who designed Ashley intended her to be slightly more endowed but did not devote resources to that in ME1.

I'm no expert on cup sizes but I can almost certainly say Ash is not sporting F's.

Ashley also had a different VA when she was first revealed and she was a Caucasion Chick that was a Bi Option.

Final Ashley was different VA, Mixed Descent, and Straight only.

My issue with some of the remarks in this thread is that Ashley putting make-up on is a sign of confidence or something and I find that wholly wrong.  I can't help it.  It's like this whole time you lived as you were and now that you're confident you're going to put on a different face?  I thought confidence was about owning up to who and what you are and not trying to adopt a new facade or persona since not having confidence in yourself would entail hiding, subterfuge, obfuscation, or misdirection.

That would apply if you think that Ash did not wear make up or find make-up evil. I always thought that Ash did wear make-up in her personal life but did not wear it while on duty. If she is a spectre then she will not feel the same restrictions that she would feel as an Alliance soldier.

Confidence can impact people in different ways ... Look at someone who has lost weight, someone who is headed out on a date with something that they really, really liked or a person who got that job promotion. Part of who we are is visible and as people change you can see that on the outside.
Not sure how applying make-up equals "hiding, subterfuge, obfuscation, or misdirection". Damn that Max Factor! Image IPB

I think to be fair they should increase Shepards package if they are going to increase Ashleys boobs. Because shep must have giant balls of steel to do the things he does. lol

I dont see a problem with it. OMG shes wearing something moderately sexy and let her hair down and put on some makeup. You know, some girls like to dress up a bit. I dont see how its discrediting her as a character. And about the cup size change, not really changed that much. She has the same size as before probably, a bit of help from teh suit. The only reason she had none was because she was wearing heavy armor, those really dont fit curves last time I checked.

TL;DR?
Wait till the game is out, dont attack it yet we dont know what will happen.

Indeed.

If this is what Ashley is wearing now than I demand that my Male Shepard go into battle in just his boxers. His manly chest will defy logic and allow him to breath in space and stuff without any ill side effects.

Meh, be pessimistic. its their game, I dont think the hair or makeup is bad at all. However the ME team I think has learned lessons from the fans, they gave Miri a combat suit in a DLC pack. They probably arent going to repeat the same mistake again. Itll probably be her casual attire. And if not meh, its a game, im not gonna be all up in arms if one of the characters suits is unrealistic. Want to know something else unrealistic. Element Zero. THere I said it :wizard:
