Is it really fair to attack the GI preview of Ashley as being dramatically oversexualized?

What people really wanna know is why femshep appears to be about the only woman in the ME series (not counting Jack) who isn't getting about 6 lbs of silicon added to her bosom all of a sudden.

I really hope they don't give Ashley a sudden jump in cup size even though she won't appear in most of my games.

I fear for Jack more,  "Mature" can mean many, many things...

Don't worry, it won't compare to the new Femshep who now has gone up five cupsizes! You heard it here first!

It's already done, and don't look for it to be changed back either.

Seriously though, I really would love to have a conversation with Bioware's conceptual artists and ask them what justifications they had for coming up with this look for a Soldier.

I suspect their answer would be along the lines of "thats whats popular with the core, male audience and once we saw the massive popularity revolveing around Miranda, we had to change her appearence so shes more popularly recieved with the fan base. We know we cannot make everyone happy but more people will approve of the change than oppose it."  AKA...fan service, which is the cause of...

I mean there IS a reason Miranda got the most "graphic" erotic scene...

Well you get the point... the point is...this is clearly the new direction Bioware is taking their products.

I don't mind form-fitting but when a character suddenly goes up about three cup sizes, alarm bells start going off.

Considering every woman in ME1 had the same cup size, I still consider diversifying it a bit as an up side.

Size isn't everything. Camera angles, mannerisms, overdoing the cleavage, etc. That's what the real issue is with sex appeal going overboard. ME1's Ashley wasn't guilty of that, but ME1's Ashley also happened to be like every other character on the Normandy: when you talked to them, they stood still and just stuck to stock animations and face shots. The only one with a decent unique mannerism was Kaiden, and that was one animation at the start of his talks. In ME2, people roam around, sit down, etc. Much more dynamic. We'll see where Ash fits in whilst not in "I hate Cerberus" mode when ME3 comes out, but a form-fitting jumpsuit doth not equal Miranda. I honestly can't picture Ash making the sort of unconscious "sexy" poses Miranda assumes on a regular basis (and because it's Miranda, I can easily imagine those being unconscious habit), and that's my chief concern. A little added buoyancy and an armor reduction isn't enough to jump to that level of alert, not quite yet.

That's mostly my sentiment.

I took a look at it and decided that she was wearing a shirt that was a bit form fitting but terribly revealing or outrageous. Aside from the open collar it's really not that much worse from the human light armors in ME1.

I see plenty of girls wearing clothes that cover less than Ashley's in the GI pic on a day to day basis. But I'm seeing hordes of people saying she's dressed like a complete **** in a catsuit or something to that effect. I don't think that response is appropriate.

I agree.  I suspect what we're seeing in the magazine is a non-combat uniform, maybe even the equivalent of a work shirt or crew shirt.  Or maybe just casual wear.  Hell, she may not wear that at all in the actual game, it could just be concept art.

she definitely doesn't look like a spectre or a military woman

tho i think the bigger problem is she looks too much like Miranda

It's possible It's concept art but if that's in the game that is what she's gonna be wearing all game. You really believe BW would create multiple appearances (more than the 2 in ME2 that are only slightly different) and not sell it later on as an appearance pack Posted Image? Also I could care less what it looks like people whining over this are overreacting.

Leave the flaunty sexiness to Miranda. It fits her character.

BioWare: you have nothing to gain by doing this to Ashley. The people who will romance her will romance her regardless of appearance. Focus on making Miranda and Asari sexier. We Ashley lovers don't care about hair style or breast size. She's perfect just the way she is.

I was never a huge fan of Ashley. However, now that she's actually attractive for ME3, that could change quickly ;)

After the ME2 treatment of women in general, oversexualized is a valid complaint that Bioware would need to defend against on the basis of recent behavior.

What problem? Bioware made her look more attractive instead of keeping her less attractive.. I'm simply commenting on that change. If you think Bioware is the problem, then stop buying their games. Problem solved

I seem to remember Ashley having quite a bit df sexiness or innuendo in her tone when talking to Shepard. "You should see my dance moves" springs to mind from the Flux nightclub.

She may be all soldier when on duty but I don't see any reason to think she can't let her hair down when she wants to. Nor do I see any reason to think that it's a bad thing if she did.

As for the outfit being informal wear, I don't think so at all. It looks like extremely thick and stiff leather-like material with metal plates round the shoulders. If that's not armour I'd be very surprised.

Regards

Julian

No that "change" as you call it is an opinion...and one that many disagree with.

Opinion?  Ashley's appearance is being improved in ME3.  Whether you diagree with it or not doesn't prevent it from happening.  I understand why you disagree, but there are also people who approve her new representation. I am looking forward to her updated appearance because it will add depth to her character, not because I'm a testosterone-raging, hormonal-packed male.  Even Jacob had more character development than she did, and her appearance in ME3 will go a long way to adding substance to her character.

The problem being "The general public pandering to oversexualized female objectification," although I thought my ".jpg" thing would make it clear enough that I was partly joking about it.

FYI, it's possible to make someone more attractive without being shameless about it, and Ash had her own perfectly good brand of sexy going already, all they needed to do was tweak it a little. While I still think reactions to Ash's new outfit are somewhat exaggerated... her new outfit is wholly unnecessary and doesn't seem that much like a "natural evolution" of the character at all.

There is no such thing as overly sexualized.

However, I really hope she gets armor in ME3 and that the pic everyone is talking about is just what she wears on the ship or something...

In ME EVERYONE wore armor PERIOD. You know, because they're in a war. Even Liara, who's not even a warfighter, actually a scholar, wore armor, because that's just what you wear when people are shooting at you!!!

Honestly it was completely ridiculous in ME2 where only certain characters wore armor at all! I recall Miranda boarding the collector ship with nothing to protect her from the vacuum of space but her spandex and an oxygen mask like the ones that drop down in the event of an emergency on a plane. That was just stupid. Even though it made for awesome eye candy.

I really hope they aren't doing the same thing with ME3, AND that the clothes get even more skimpy and/or form fitting in cutscenes/not combat. In fact I'm putting in my vote right now for a shower scene! All public showers are unisex in the future right?

I guess what we are experiencing is a clash of tastes.

On one side we have the group that liked Ashley the way she was. She dressed in a spartan attire , and her hair fit perfectly for a military ship. The reasons for people liking this look vary, but generally it involves her look fitting her attitude and profession.

On the other hand we have those that like Ashley's new look. While all we can judge so far is this single picture, the main reasons stated for people to like this new look is that she is "sexy." This phrase is often followed by how they might even like her now.

As for me I am just hoping this isn't her permanent look. Miranda was amongst the most useful of the squad-mates, and I did like her personality somewhat, but I hated taking miranda into any sort of combat situation because she just looked ridiculous for any sort of combat. I was constantly fearing she would trip and stumble in all the rough landscapes like the collector ship or any outdoor mission.

So I am really hoping she either changes her clothes once she joins the crew, or we get the option to give her some armor. Of course I also hope she keeps her personality.

Its not really fanservice if Ashley s fans don't like it.

I wish they made a really obese female squadmate with bad acne and an overbite. Right guys? I hate boobs. They make me feel weird. In my pants.

Team Ninja and DMC4's Gloria would like to have a word with you.

That characters may have alternative outfits (that aren't DLC-based) is not entirely out of the question, but the shoulder plating and thick-leather "light armor" look of the thing suggests that it is combat attire.

Given the "galactic war" thing, it'd be a bit silly to have characters running around in daywear, anyway. I do hope they amp up the practicality of characters' costumes just a bit. The "breather mask" issue is especially embarrassing. Hello? Space has no air pressure. You think volus have to wear those pressure suits because they fear sunburn? HUMAN FLESH WILL SPLIT OPEN IN INSUFFICIENT PRESSURE, TOO.
