I hate the Kordecai Wilds and Ishar, I really do. SInce I have started the game I don't know how many times to explore new characters (but eventually abandoned then in Lotherin) those levels bore me to tears.
So, I discovered campaign mods, and, after a wild downloading orgy -Alley of Murders, Quests and Legends, Ser Gilmore, Darkspawn Chasms, and more- I started a new mage game to try them all. I left Flemeth's hut... and reached Lothering without interruptions. Where is my dog?
Ooops, I forgot to give the Flower to the kennel master. I also forgot to keep a save there, the oldest I keep is already inside Ishar. [censored], [censored], [censored] . I need to start again.
AAARGH!! I KILLED MY DOG!!!

This right here is why I prefer the human noble origin.

Wow, actually starting over because of... impressive.
I mean, why not just go without the malodorous mutt? I never really understood the local fascination with big ugly dogs, anyway. I agree with Marjorlaine on only very few things indeed - but she is very right with "Ferelden smells like wet dog."

So is Sten, by the way..

Hey! Unlike all the bunch of primadonna whiners you are stuck with, Dog never dissaproves. And, as soon as Lothering itself, he brings you half eaten cake, dirty pants, and, (almost as important for a mage) a tier 4 magic staff.
Ok, so I want the mutt for the staff. I'm shallow like that.

Yes, I... remember the cake. This cake is not a lie.
But at that point I certainly wished it was. *gah*

Anyway, point taken.

Do you have Return to Ostagar DLC? I believe there is an option to get Dog there if he's not picked up the first time. But I don't know if that still happens if you don't give the kennel master the flower.

I'm sure you don't want to restart, but you should be no further into Origins than ~5 hours when you can do that quest for the kennel master. That isn't too much to replay.
As mentioned by Addai, you can get another mabari from Return to Ostagar.

I'm back at Lothering, loathing the damm ogre more than ever. Yay!
To reward my patience, the pooch (named, of course, Lazarus) found the staff at the very fist try. I think I will give him all the bones this time 'round instead of saving then for an emergency extra +1 approval from the morons.

When fighting the ogre, try running behind the barrels and use ranged attacks. They can't reach you from there.
