I had to start again my mage game (look for my screams and moanings in the "I killed my dog" topic than should be somwhere near this one).
And since I am forced to be back, I absolutely refuse the wear the Aprentice Monstrosity -I mean cowl- I'm getting the Enchanter Cowl.
This, as those you you who often play mages will know, is a (rare) random item in the mage origin. I am cheating: I will reload my entrance in iether the Senior quarters or the spider cellars as many times as necessary (don't loook at me like that. As if you had never done that before opening a chest in NW2).
So does anyone, by chance, remember exactly where was the cowl? I think it was in either the chest or the armory on your room (that is the big dorm with three beds), but I am not sure, and I certainyl don't want to spend twenty minutes relaoding the Senior Magues rooms i it happens to be somewhere with the spiders!
Looking for a cowl in mage origin.

It looks like you are on PC... might it be easier to enable the debug console and add the hat to your inventory?
Otherwise, the wiki just mentions "random loot" for both locations. I know there's different 'levels' of random loot, but you might be able to get the cowl in either location. If you've got the toolset, you can look for the chests in question and see what kind of loot drops they have.
ETA: Additem script at DANexus; you'll need to learn the item name of the cowl, though.

Well, using the debug console presuposes certain things, like, you know, being able to do anything beyond pressing the button labeled "on"
Sigh. Murphy loves to have the last laught. I resigned myself to being hatless -I had set myself a 20 reload maximun- and nothing. I left for some chores, returned to the game, and there it was. (it is in your room's chest, by the way. It makes sense for the best random loot in the origin, I suppose)

Don't worry too much about mage headgear. In Origins, there isn't too much that compares with the Libertarian's Cowl that you'll find during the Broken Circle part of the main quest. Just let your hair flow in the wind until then.
If you make it to Awakening (if you have it), you'll have more options. Though, since there isn't really any mage head gear that helps much with spellpower or mana in Origins, I usually take the +12 defense from Libertarian's Cowl.

The libertatia's cowl had the same problem as the apprentice: It is ugly as sin. And honestly, by the time I get it I probably would be an Arcane Warrior wearing the Helm of Hlonndeath

I agree about most of the mage headwear looking like garbage. The best-looking cloth helmets I've found are the Reinforced Magus Cowl (not sure where I got it, the wiki doesn't say) and the First Enchanter's Cowl.

If the +12 defense from the Libertarian's Cowl isn't enough for you to be able to tolerate it's appearance, despite headgear not being visible during dialogue, then you might as well not wear headgear at all, since you won't be missing out. If you plan on going arcane warrior later, then you can certainly get by until then.
It's not until Awakening where you start seeing headgear that gives boosts to spellpower and etc. Even then, Toque of the Oblivious and etc., don't look any different than cowls like the Libertarian's Cowl.
