Okay - i've been trying to host or join a BG2 game all day, with two computers on the same router, both with windows 7 64 bit.
The first problem we had was apparently a common one - the game crashed, on both of our computers, when one of us tried to host - windowed mode fixed this.
However, there's a much trickier problem I haven't been able to fix. Whenever I select the tcp/ip protocol, and attempt to host a new game, after putting in a server and player name, and clicking 'new game' the button pushes down and the mouse freezes, as if it's loading..... and then about 10 seconds later the button depresses and nothing happens. No loading screen, nothing. I can't find aw ay to fix this - i've even uninstalled it and reinstalled it and repatched it, and uninstalled it and reinstalled it in a folder outside of program files. Nada - it won't ever load.
On the other hand, the other computer, a desktop, can create a game just fine - nevermind that he's using the same internet connection and the same router on windows 7 as well with identical patching (though his is still in program files while mine isn't any more). The problem here, is I can't join /his/ game - it always times out and gives a connection error, even after attempting to forward ports, and i've attempted to forward a goddamn lot of ports - i've disabled windows firewall, attempted to use gameranger, attempted to use hamachi, attempted to use hamachi and gameranger, nothing - it always times out.
I'm considering that they're possibly related - the fact that I can't host might mean that i'm somehow unable to join, but this is just an uneducated guess.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix either problem? it's incredibly frustrating, I've spent many hours trying everything to fix this so we can just play the damn game.
Can't host, or join multiplayer! (windowed mode doesn't fix it)

1. Is your network working i.e. can you log onto your computer and see folders on his (LAN)?
2. Do you both have admin rights on both computers (LAN)?.
3. Are they different (serial #) copies of the game?

Although I still do have my original disks I eventually decided to buy the downloadable versions of BG1 and BG2 from GOG. If there is any doubt about version compatibility / installation method you could try that and install using the same routine on both computers (multiple downloads are allowed, so you would only need to pay once).ussnorway wrote...

Network was working and we did have admin rights - BG2 doesn't need a cd key, thankfully.
Trying to host a new game, or join, even from a different network doesn't seem to work.
The thing that baffles me the most is the new game button doing nothing - no loading screen no error no nothing.. connection problems sometimes just.. happen, but the new game thing doesn't seem to make any sense.

I am having the same issue. The machine that doesn't work, what network adapter is it using? The machine that doesn't work in my house has an nforce chipset.

This raises a question. A few of us decided we'd do a multiplayer...but do my husband and I need to buy separate copies of the game for this?
