Now I finished my first few stories, I'm sort of stuck as to where to actually put them up for reading. FF.net is very userfriendly, but the content, ye gods (or at least a big percentage of it; I did read some good stuff there, mind you). I may not be the next David Gaider, but still I'm sort of reluctant. Plus I also don't exactly cater to many of the tastes of the kinky population there, so chances are it's the wrong place to go anyway.

I've toyed with the idea of just slapping all my writings onto a site of my own somewhere, but my knowledge of html isn't extensive enough to provide room for comments and suchlike (well, without risking Death by Spam).

Any ideas on where to go?

As you said, there's ff.net. If you want the largest number of possible readers that's your best shot. You could livejournal it. There is a very active kmeme community for Dragon Age on LiveJournal. There's also dreamwidth, which is very similar to livejournal. For a ff.net alternative there's an archive of our own, which is also less strict about more adult fare. You could also blog it. Many people use the blog feature here for posting stories.

There isn't one perfect solution. You'll have to decide which one or many of the above meet your needs.

Well, the thing is I mostly write *not* very sexually explicit stuff, that also has a certain lack of mushiness-- and judging from the content of FF.net, this is considered highly boring :)

Didn't know about the others you mentioned; some of those seem to suffer from the same problem, but to a slightly lesser extent. It's certainly interesting to look at. Thanks.

I'm not a huge fan of ff.net, but it does seem to produce the most eyeballs. As for mushiness, I think some reviewers carp about it a fair amount, but why worry about some other person's problem?

Post what you write. If someone makes a valid point, take it to heart. If they're just whinging, ignore 'em. My stuff rarely gets reviewed, but it does seem to be read.

Oh, it's not the reviews, it's mostly that I wonder if I'm in the right place if people expect very explicit content and/or mush. I won't lose sleep over disappointing them -- but I'm hesitant about contributing to a place where over the top seems to be the standard.

I wish there was a 'Moderately Sane Person Inside' button on those fanfic collection sites :/

I'm about to remove my last two stories from FF.net and one-shots from DA because I started my own blog for the darned things. I decided that I had so much out there (and FF kept crapping out on me during the brief on-line time I have during the week) that I would just control it myself. The only hesitation is losing some great reviews (which problem you don't have). I just started a new Blogger blog, threw up a template that said, "Bioware," to me, and started posting.

That said, I have a pretty big back-log and a few things on-going so I don't have any trouble posting quite a bit. If you don't think you'll keep writing then someplace static like FF or one of the other suggestions might be better for you.

Well, the blogs seem to be the most neutral option, but as with most social networking sites I find the blog format confusing and inconvenient to look at.

btw can you actually find anything on those blog sites? Using the search option usually only gives me people's interests instead of their fanfic. Gah, I'm feeling old.

There is actually also a lot of writing on deviantart, there are quite a few thriving fanfic communities there.

For what it's worth, I tend to use a multiple site solution. Blogger recently had a nasty crash. FF.net tends to be flaky at times, the more so if you obsess over stats. All of the different alternatives have flaws. By using more than one location you can try to reach the largest audience possible and hopefully get the readers you want.

Me, too. For my DAO fic, it's FF.net and thread on this site (which I really love for discussion purposes...I hate that it's not feasible to have fic specific threads with the DA2 forum configuration). My DA2 fic, which I started posting to FF.net when it started going all wonky, is also up on Deviant Art. I'm pretty happy with both set ups.

I've noticed a fair number of people are using Deviantart for fanfic. How does it compare to the other venues?

If you post concurrently on FF.net and Dev Art, it's not too painful. Since FF.net will provide the html for uploaded documents, you can copy/paste that into a file on DA and it's done. Stats and feedback are more public on DA, which doesn't really bother me but it might weird some people out.

The biggest issue with DA that I can foresee is navigating longer fics. Since each chapter is its own standalone piece, you have to be pretty good about making sure everything is clearly labeled so readers know where to start/where to pick up. I have a folder for my story and put links to the previous and following chapter in the description of each chapter, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. However, I really like the community aspect there. It feels less disconnected from the readership than FF.net does.

Having both blog and ff.net sounds good. It'll take time to figure out blogging since I'm such a social media phobic, but I'm sure I'll manage it one day.

I've registered at ff.net too, though I'm curious how the document manager likes my Open Office. For some reason it doesn't allow you to upload right away, so I'll have to sit out the two day waiting period anyway.

I can answer your question about Open Office. Of all the file formats, odt seems to give the least difficulty for me. I've had rtf files go all pear shaped and wonky, but a document created and saved in Open Office always seems to upload and display without a hitch.

Of course, what's going to happen is it will futz up for someone reading this and they'll scratch their head and wonder what on earth I was going on about.

Done and posted. Thanks for the help, and yes, Open Office works just peachy.

Open Office works beautifully with FF for me, as well.  I just hate the idea of having duplicate content all over the web so I've been deleting my stories from FF and DA.  Sadly, that means I have lost all of my readers but I was so lax in posting for a long time that few were keeping up, anyway.  I may re-think that strategy but for now I'm just happy to have a way to index my chapters and stories as I post them.

One tip, if you do start blogging as well: in Blogger, at least, when you cut and paste from a document make sure you're in the "Edit HTML" tab and not the "Compose" tab.  That will strip any extraneous code from your text and keep things like fonts special characters from screwing up your layout.  You will have to go back to add any italics or bold but at least you won't have to clean up the hidden code word processors add.  At least Open Office throws in about a tenth of what MS Word does.
