In the description for many weapons, it says that this weapon "upgrades" a previous one. For example, "the Mantis gun upgrades the Viper gun", or something like that. Does this mean that obtaining the new weapon also makes the older one better, or simply that the new weapon is somewhat better than the previous? I've noticed that newer weapons are not necessarily "better" than previous ones, it seems a matter of taste and need.
Another question, there's an assault gun that fires five shots per burst, but it says that it can be primed for rapid fire. How do I "prime" it?

It basically doesn't mean a thing. Only the Widow is actually a clear upgrade over another weapon in the sense that it does exactly the same thing, only better. And no the text doesn't mean your Mantis is now somehow better, it means the Viper is supposed to be an upgrade. But it's not even the same type of weapon.
I looked up the rapid fire thing. It's the Vindicator. By priming it they simply mean pulsing the trigger. I don't really know if I would call that priming it for anything. It's the same thing you do with the Shuriken. Hold down the trigger, and it fires a steady stream of bursts. Quickly tap the trigger and it fires basically full auto.
