If you make a thread with topic like " Official L.A. NOIRE review " it would be ohidunno kinda neat if the original post  had something even remotely, vaguely close to touching what the title suggests:p

Starting a thread with incredibly misleading topic and "Omg it's inc soon wow guys" doesn't add that much value you know.

Then let me supplement this poorly titled thread with 23 critical reviews averaging 91/100!

Sorry this thread dissapoints.

I don't pick the game up til another five hours.  Once I've played it some I'll give my two cents. Until then here's a review from pnosker www.pnosker.com/video-games/xbox-games/1138-la-noire-review-xbox-360.  It says it's the only review you need to read on L.A. Noire.

I'm liking it so far. Driving around is clunky, but bearable.

It picks up when you get to the homicide desk. There were enough twists and turns for an entire season of Dexter.

Here are my general impressions, after about 5 hours gameplay.
My background: I've never played any of the Rockstar Games before. I'm a big fan of the police quest series.

Facial expressions are stunning. Characters are genuine, believable.
First portion of the game when you are a street cop is introductory to the game, it acts more as a tutorial. You're being driven around and trailed into the investigations. Once you join traffic, you have more freedom to roam around and respond to calls if you decide to.

Character animations are stunning. It's the first time I see a character go up and down a flight of stairs in such a realistic manner. My cop runs like I would expect someone to run in real life. Alas Cole seems to be quite the marathon runner because he can run forever without ever getting tired, but that's a minor inconvenience.

The environment is gorgeous and extremely detailed, cars and pedestrians will respond if you turn on the police sirens. The decors are truly fantastic, with old style cars, old-fashion telephones, the tramway and the stop/go signals on the streetlights. There is so much to see in a crime scene that you can probably easily spend 30 minutes in a small perimeter and still discover new information. Mind you, you can't interact with everything and not everything will be relevant to your investigation, but I believe that's the point :)

Controls are clunky. As I mentionned, I've never played previous Rockstar games so all the controls were new for me. At first I was very uncomfortable with the camera movement. After a while now it's better, but I still have a hard time with properly combining aiming, shooting and running. At least there's an option to help you auto-aim :)

Interrogations are fun. So far, most of the facial cues are super obvious, but I believe that it's only meant to get more difficult as time pass. Confronting a liar with an evidence is very gratifying, however what might be a turn off is how fast the game responds to a bad assessment (sound cues if you guessed right or wrong).

This game is obviously not a branching storyline game. My advice is that if you truly want to enjoy it, remove as much hint cues as you can, because otherwise you might not do a full replay again (replayability value is entirely based on completionist achievements).

It's definitely a game worth checking out.
I'm playing it on PS3. The only "bug" I had was trying to access the downloadable content, which freezes the game, but it's obviously not working right now with PSN being partially down). Game install takes about 5 minutes.

I've got to be honest. I actually kind of like this. It's combat isn't the greatest and some of the cutscenes are overly long but unlike say Metal Gear Solid 4 I actually feel like an active participant in this game's storyline. I actually care about the characters and the world around me enough to feel compelled to continue playing and while the combat isn't spectacular, it's not terrible either. So far so good.

How far along are you after this short time?

Do you think it will be a relatively short game because of the linear aspects?

I don't think so. I'm on case 11 of 21, the first 4 cases were brief, five minute tutorials, and I've been playing for 12 hours. The cases seem to get longer and more complex as you go. The final case of the homicide desk took me more than two hours.

My thoughts, in an easy list. I'm not very far in though, so it's likely things will change.

Pros:
  • Facial animations. I've never seen video game characters express themselves so realistically.
  • Interrogations. I find them pretty intense and I'm always unsure whether I'm going to be correct in my assessment of a suspect.
  • The environments are very very nice.
  • Voice acting.
  • Side Characters.
Unsure whether pro or con:
  • Cole Phelps as a character. There's certainly nothing bad about him. But on the other hand, nothing's made me really root for him either and I don't find him exactly interesting yet. Hopefully that changes.
Con:
  • I don't like how the story is presented. You're basically shown a case right from the get go and in bewtween them are Phelps' flashbacks. I want something like the Normandy in ME or the ability to ride around Texas in RDR. I want down time with the ability to explore. Because with a case in front of me immediately, I don't feel like I have the freedom to, and thus the vibrant world feels kinda closed in or off limits. Your mileage may vary.
  • Even though I'm never quite sure, the interrogations are easy. But like Miashi said, they'll probably get more difficult.

Unfortunatly, the day I brought this game home was the day I was knocked down with some flu type symptoms. I haven't been able to stand up let alone put anytime into the game. All I did so far was go on a driver's rampage, because the controls were so clunky anyway and maybe I shouldn't have drunken all that cough syrup.

I looked on wikipedia and Rockstar's official site, but I still don't "get" the game. Is this going to be a shoot'em up or a slower paced detective game? Could someone define what type of game this is, because I already have GTA IV and I don't want a clone of it. I would welcome a game where you had to use your brain to solve crime.

Yeah, it still is a GTA clone, but the characters always sell and the interrogation is where the heart of the game is.

I don't why people are complaining about the controls, all RockStar games have the exact same controls!

lol spoken like someone who clearly hasn't been playing it.
My only complaint is the freeroam is pointless.  I see no reason to explore the city as there is nothing to find or do in it outside of the cases.
Aside from that this game is brilliant.  If the creators of CSI admitted their show sucked and made a new crime show this is what would redeem them.  It feels like i'm in a cop drama (a good one)
Turn off the hints and don't use intuition unless you feel really stuck and this game is sweet.  I admit I feel stupid playing this game.  From blindly wandering a suspects house looking for cluse to flat out guessing on the interrogations.  This game is outsmarting me and i love it.

Nah, I've played it. There are still side-missions that require shooting.

No actually this has been changed a bit.  Its kinda hard to get into climbing and jumping over fences are done automatically as you run and its all tied to R2 (or whatever the Xbox equivalent is.)

LOL you gonna compare the street cases to a GTA sidemission?
start shooting up innocent people and tell me this is a GTA clone :?

True, they manage to make it stand out a bit with the crooks grabbing a random bystander like in "A Marriage Made in Heaven" case if memory serves correct, but the game's side missions  are still mostly similar to the likes of RDR and GTA4 although it's strongpoint is the main cases with the detective work and the interrogation along with some pretty rad dialogue.

Kelso: Excuse me, but...
Sergeant: Excuse me? **** you!

(For the record, that dialogue bit was from the cutscenes, not the actual interrogations)

I'm not talking about the morality, I'm talking about the mission structure, damnit!

I don't remember getting a call from dispatch and helping the cops stop a robbery.  I recall being the robber killing the cops.
Structur may be similar but imagine being one of the cops sent to stop Niko and thats what we have here.

Again, I don't mean which side your on. I'm referring to the fact that when you aren't solving cases, you're mostly shooting people. You're on the cops' side this time, but you're still taking cover and shooting people.

After 7 hours, I'm still in traffic (case 4 I think?). However, I have a feeling that my current case could push me over to vice. I've heard that it's not a very long game. About 20 hours maybe? Without oncall duties.

Although I usually enjoy long games, they often have these moments that feel flat or like a grind. So far, each assigment has a variety that makes it different from the other (pursuit, dealing with hostage, following suspects without being detected, etc.

I've been playing LA Noire since midnight launch and I'm almost finished with the homicide desk. I am loving this game. It feels like I'm playing a combination of GTA and Myst. The puzzles are relatively simple but they still require thought and attention.

I don't know about it getting perfect 10/10 or 100/100, it has a small handful of flaws, but overall it is a very polished game experience.

The side cases rely heavily on scripted events.  A chase scene usually ends the same way no matter how ready you are.  A gun fight is usually over in a matter of seconds.  I think I've killed a max of 20 criminals so far and I've done quite a few of the side cases.
Why is every game that looks even remotely like GTA emmediatly considered a GTA clone?

Man, I really suck at interrogation. This game takes alot of thinking and forces you to slow down. Thank God right after that you can respond to a call and go on a high speed chase that ends in a shootout.

I just got to the Vice desk, homicide was cool. You investigate the Black Dahlia killer.
