Since I don't want to know too much about a game, I tend to play without looking too much into guides and the DA wiki.

But this time, I think, I've made a fundamental mistake. On my fourth playthrough. Always good for a surprise, this game...

My plan (Human Noble) was to marry Anora. I had convinced her to marry me, and had even informed Alistair about it. At the Landsmeet, I let Alistair fight Loghain, because I figured Anora wouldn't marry me if I killed her father myself. But I have hardened Alistair, and now after the Duel, Arl Eamon proceeds with proclaiming Alistair King, Alistair has my bride-to-be locked away and there's nothing I can do about it.

Is there another way to do this? I don't want to go back sixty hours of my playthrough because of this.

(Why isn't there any furious smilie here on this forum??)

PS: And, as I just found out, if I do the duel with Loghain and kill him afterwards, then I can choose who rules, but Anora refuses to marry me. And if Alistair kills Loghain, then I don't get to choose! Now where's the reasoning behind that???

The logic is that Alistair, hardened, believes he is ready to be King, and Anora, as you said, refuses to marry the man who killed her father, but as to your original question. There is a way to have a hardened Alistair and still marry Anora.
Spare Loghain.

- Hardening Alistair does not affect Anora's decision to marry you.
- Whenever you have Alistair duel Loghain, he automatically executes Loghain, is proclaimed King and has Anora carted off to the tower. So if you want Anora on the throne, you have to fight Loghain yourself (or use a non-Alistair companion).
- You are right that Anora will refuse to marry you if you kill Loghain, however. So, having dueled him, you must then spare him.

Thanks for your replies.

hardened, believes he is ready to be King, and Anora, as you said,
refuses to marry the man who killed her father...

Yes, but on the same Landsmeet, if I instead of Alistair fight and kill Loghain, I get the decision, Alistair hardened or not, whereas if Alistair fights and kills him, "the Landsmeet has decided" and Alistair gets to be king automatically.

Spare Loghain.

I figured the same, that in my situation, sparing Loghain would be the only way. But since I was quite... underwhelmed with this the last time I did it, I'd have liked to keep Alistair.

How about an unhardened Alistair fighting Loghain? Does he still get automatically made king?

Unhardened Alistair will still execute Loghain without giving you a choice, but he declines the crown afterwards (unless you specifically choose him in the dialogue that follows). So the way is free for your marital bliss!

Yes, thank you, StoneTheCrow, I indeed meant the choice to NOT have Alistair on the throne.

The good thing is that I brought him to Goldanna about 60 hours ago, yet the second dialogue needed for hardening him "I've been thinking about what you told me" was only eight hours ago for some reason. So, If I want to correct that ('emasculate' Alistair again), all I lose is eight hours, not sixty...

Clean hands. Alistair gets Loghain out of the way, and I get to be 'second banana' king. Everyone is happy.

Funny thing that hardened Alistair who doesn't duel Loghain keeps Eamon from proclaiming him king: "Wait! When did this get decided?!", leaving the decision to the Warden, but when you speak to him before you decide, he urges you to make him king?!

PS: The first time I tried this (see my OP), what really added insult to injury was that afterwards, Alistair came and THANKED me for putting him on the throne, despite the fact that I had arranged with Anora to marry her and had even told Alistair that I'd do so, and hadn't lifted a finger to help him... what I wanted to answer him was something along "Yeah, right, thanks for nothing; why don't you go jump from the highest tower of this castle..."

You can still harden Alistair after the Landmeet, though. For the Landmeet is an unhardened Alistair the only possibility to become Prince Consort yourself. Aside from sparing Loghain, of course.

(And even after all the time I still giggle when someone writes 'hardening Alistair' XD)

Never played a male warden but...if you duel Loghain yourself but let Alistair kill him you can still put Anora on the throne and marry her. Just don't let a hardened Alistair duel him, that takes the decisions away from the warden.

Yep.

Hardened Alistair:
If he duels Loghain, he kills him and becomes king.

IF he does not duel Loghain he tries to claim the throne IF you spare Loghain.

Unhardened Alistair:
Will still kill Loghain in a duel but does not have to become the king.

Still tries to claim the throne if you spare Loghain though.

Yes, but the problem is that I have already hardened him. Good to know for next time, though. And lucky for me that the "I've been thinking..." dialoge came along so late in this playthrough... just have to redo some sidequests and Return to Ostagar...

Not if he's hardened, as I had to find out yesterday. Same behavior as if he had dueled him:

If he kills Loghain and is hardened, he becomes King, no chance to intervene. No matter who dueled him. Seems he gets a big enough testosterone rush from killing Loghain to accept the crown right away... (and still thanking me afterwards for supporting him)

Thanks everybody for the input.

Huh...the wiki says a male warden who spares Loghain can only marry Anora if Alistair is unhardened, how about that. Image IPB

A weird feeling - I have reloaded the eight hour old save with the "I've been thinking..." dialogue (which came after giving him Duncan's shield) and have started what I call "the destruction of self-confident Alistair"...

I'm a heavy role-player and this is really hard - like some time-traveling story where you travel into the past and wipe some people from existence - this was the first time I really noticed how enthusiastic Alistair was about his newfound confidence... and then: "That's not what I meant! Don't do that!" - no, I don't like kicking puppies... or neutering them, for that matter...

Hmm, It just crossed my mind - I could indeed spare Duncan's shield as a gift for later and leave him unhardened without that wretched dialogue and the remorse... and harden him after the landsmeet, for what it's worth, and only have a few hours of "artificially codependent Alistair" until then... oh, I hate metagaming!!

emasculate Alistair: - avoided
kill Loghain: to do
marry Anora: to do
harden Alistair: new task
kill Archdemon: to do

everybody lives happily ever after: priceless.

UPDATE:

emasculate Alistair: - avoided
kill Loghain: check
marry Anora: check (technically, engaged)
harden Alistair: check
get Leliana's approval: check (now that was easy!)
kill Archdemon: to do
outmaneuver Anora and become sole king: new task...

everything worked.

everybody lives happily ever after: priceless.
