I'm doing my first playthrough on normal difficulty and I've been auto-levelling my companions for the most part since I didn't feel like being picky with stats and talents until I get a better feel for the game.

After reading a few threads there seems to be some uncertainty as to the effectiveness of auto-levelling, so I thought I might tell how things have been going in my game.

I've gotten to level 17-18 by now and so far auto-level has been well behaved doesn't seem to have hurt many of my characters significantly. Alistair has taken all "sword and shield" friendly talents like he should have, Zevran has taken dual weapons, Liana is pretty much set up for archery, ect. I can see how they could have turned out slightly better if I had levelled them myself, but honestly for most of them there wouldn't have been that much of a difference. Initially, I thought Wynne would have been crippled due to mages having so many choices, but surprisingly the auto-level has stuck to setting her up for healing and support rather well.

There are two exceptions though. The characters who seem to have been significantly hurt by the auto-levelling in my party are Sten and Morrigan, who do seem to be scattering their stats and talents like some people have been saying and have been really crippling themselves. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but Sten and Morrigan also happen to be the characters I use the least. This seems to suggest that how you are using the characters influences how they auto-level, but I would hesitate to jump to that conclusion since it might be the other way around and I may not be using them as much because they are auto-levelling poorly.

In short:
All my companions in my current game are auto-levelling well with the exceptions of Sten and Morrigan. Sten and Morrigan have been crippling themselves and scattering their stats, skills, and talents suprisingly badly compared to my other companions. They are also the characters I use the least, though I'm not sure what the correlation is there.

Improperly assigned stats can force talents to be scattered. That's probably Morrigan's problem. If she doesn't stack up her magic quickly, she can't get to those Tier 4s and must pick up lower spells.

it would seem like they would use a priority system for auto leveling.

something like
if magic < x then +magic
if magic > x then +willpower

im sure it would be more complicated than that as you would also have set parameters for too much willpower and then a tertiary stat and then for that too, but you get the general idea.

then set up a priority system for spell selection based on the character and their stats and whatnot.

im not sure how much time they would have invested into such a thing though as its probably safe to assume the vast majority would manually level their characters to suit their needs.

Thanks for the thread with the information and feedback, F-C. I had contemplated putting my companions on auto-level myself, as that is what I typically do in RPGs (I am much more selfish and focus a lot of attention on my main character).

Morrigan is one of my essential party members right now (only level 10ish), so I would not appreciate it if she was not as effective as she could be, the game is a challenge enough at some parts already!

I am not as in tune with the community and BioWare's happenings as others, do they acknowledge this problem? I am slightly disappointed in some of the issues other players are having, I appreciate BioWare games thanks to both their gameplay quality and technical quality, would love to see this stuff responded to and fixed! Don't want to be doing fan fixes a la Baldurdash.

That might very well be it. I think I'll try to manually increase her magic stat next time.

Sten's still being the wierdo case though. It seems like he's pretty much taking skills all over the place and it doesn't make sense at all. I mean, I didn't use Oghren much more than Sten, and he's leveling up nice and neat like Alistair and the others. Either Sten's auto-level is just plain bad or perhaps I did something to really mess him up.

Come to think of it, what do people usually equip Sten with?

All the other characters came with a certain type of weapon so I just kept them using that kind of weapon, but Sten was a shot in the dark. I kind of have a hunch that maybe what you equip a character with might affect how they auto-level. I've had Sten stick with big two-handed swords, so perhaps that might be what's confusing the auto-level.

You equip Sten with a sword, of course! He's a Qunari!

I meant what kind of melee weapon.

Like "two-handed sword" vs. "sword and shield" ect.

I turned off auto-level when Alistair started putting his points into raising his magic. :-P

I just respec my followers when I get them. I abide by the class/race stat minimums but otherwise I redesign them however I want. Much more replay value that way. I tried the no follower auto level mod and really liked it but it has serious issues with specializations (some characters can only ever get 1 specialization if you use it) so I eventually wound up disabling it. Personally, I think there should be a built in no follower auto level option, especially since you won't even meet some of your potential party members till very late in the game.
