Wooing Ashley and Liara

However, when playing through again, trying to replicate everything exactly, I was never confronted by Ashley and Liara, and during the Citadel lockdown, Liara was the one who came to comfort Shepard. Argh! Personally, I like Liara a lot better, but this is not how I wanted things to turn out.
Where could I have messed it up? I was still getting the flirtatious dialogues with Ashley the whole time, even after she asked about Liara.

Romance confrontation conversation will fire after 3rd planet complete
I spoke with everyone once after every completed main planet, but I think it was after the 3rd planet that I spoke to one of the girlstwice in a row and discovered that she had an additional dialogue, so maybe I didn't do enough flirting before the game wanted me to do it.
EDIT: I just loaded up a save from right after I finished the 2nd planet to see if I could get any additional dialogue out of anyone, but no one had anything more to say. So, I still am puzzled on why this didn't work as planned.

I talked to Liara once, then romanced Ashley up to the point where she tells you about her grandfather. I did the paragon dialogue, then talked to Liara a second time. I want to do a single playthrough, so I told her me and Ashley were just friends, and that I just wanted to be friends with her too. So then I go back down to Ashley to see if it worked, and she still says "looking forward to it Skipper" when I say goodbye. So do I just have to do another main mission before it takes effect, or am I stuck with Ashley (until I dump her in the locker scene)?

I was surprised to find that my teammates had new conversations after I had completed a few assignments. I thought you only unlocked new conversations after plot points (i.e. after each mission)? If that's not true, does that mean that in order for the confrontation to happen by the end of planet 3, you have to have sufficiently romanced each character? I also read that it was possible to go -too- far into a romance with a character, which would then lock you into that romance and end the romance with the other character.

I'm not 100% certain if there is a way to avoid romance either without talking to either or leaving Ashley behind on Virmire. I think both Ashley and Liara do have conversation options that give you the opportuntiy to say you aren't interested in them, but I'm not sure if you have the chance to say it to one of them if you've already said it to the other one. I know I've seen both options but they only seem to appear when one of them asks you about the other, but I think you can still get them just by talking.
WIth Ashley she says "I'm surprised to see you here sir. I thought you'd be chatting up what's-her-name" If you say "I don't see why that's any of your business", you'll be presented with an option to say "I'm not interested in you" if I remember right. And I seem to remember seeing Liara has a fairly straightfowrd question about your relationship with Ash, followed by your relationship with herself like you seemed to have selected.

Oh, it's fine if you tell Liara that there is something between you and Ash. She'll push you and ask "But you feel something for me, too, don't you...". She's pretty happy when you tell her yes.
If you want to be a total jerk, dump Ash during the confrontation then blow her up on Virmire!

Wouldn't it be more of a dick move to let her live so she can carry her resentment towards Shepard for decades? :-PIf you want to be a total jerk, dump Ash during the confrontation then blow her up on Virmire!
A bigger dick move would be to pick her at the confrontation and then on Virmire say "Nah, can't be arsed to come back and get you. Nice knowing you, though."

That's actually a really safe way to make sure you go into ME2 with no ninja romances.
Kinda harsh on Liara though. First you gun her mom down, then you break her heart. Monster.

Not sure, but I think leaving Ash to die on Virmire is more harsh than breaking Liara's heart and killing her estranged mother... and I'm pretty sure Ash would agree with me.

She can put it behind her, though. For science.

Hehe, well at least now you know for your future playthroughsVladilen wrote...
I should have known. When Liara told Shepard she wanted to have her first bonding with him and I replied "Hell yeah," I thought I heard the faintest cry of "YOU BASTARD" coming up from the engineering deck.

It happened because you had a talk about sex with Liara. The discussion about asari sex & compatibility with humans will lock Liara as a romance and you won't get the Liara & Ashley confrontation because of it. Trust me on this one because I've tested it thoroughly.
I'm attempting a romance-with-no-payoff playthrough. I like talking to my squadmates, but want a clean slate when I import to ME2; so the plan was to romance both Ash and Liara, choose Ash when they confront me, and then leave Ash to die on Virmire.
I had progressed the romances as far as I could. Ashley warned me she was "a hellcat off the battlefield, too, Skipper", Liara told me she was a virgin, both were using familiar names for me and both wanted to "talk more later" even though they had nothing to say right now. Next up was Feros (3rd story mission). To my surprise, there was no confrontation afterward, but both remained familiar and flirty (even though the only dialogue available was about the last mission, no personal chat). Worried, I went straight to Virmire, blew through it as fast as possible, and sacrificed Kaidan to see what would happen next. Again, no confrontation, and Liara came to talk to me during lockdown.
Wish I'd read DRSH's post before that. I find it's very easy for Liara to hijack other romances unless you blow her off early with the neutral "I don't think of you that way" option. The most annoying part here is that Ash kept sweet-talking me, even though I was apparently already locked into Liara.

Still no confrontation, but this time it was Ash who came to me during lockdown.
So, it seems you can pursue them both up to a point, and once you express romantic interest in both of them the confrontation will trigger after the next story mission. However, once you have the conversation with Ash that begins with her saying "There's a reason for everything, Shepard," (and potentially ends with the hellcat warning) then you're effectively locked in with her regardless of any ongoing romance with Liara. However, if you have sex talk with Liara, you'll similarly be locked in with Liara regardless of any romance with Ash. If you manage to have both talks, Liara's romance supercedes Ash's. The main difference is that once you're locked in with Liara you can't really talk to Ash anymore, whereas Liara is always willing to talk no matter what. Note that once you've had either conversation, the love-triangle confrontation will never happen.
