The only advice I've been able to find on this matter is 'play with it'.

Without overlap, I get; but for the life of me I can't seem to divvy up my image how I'd like. I was hoping someone might be able to give some insight.

The map I'd like to use has a width to height ration of ~1.4. (scaled version of working template here.

In general, how does YATT go about handling area size vs. image size with overlap? I'd like to be able to lay out the grid on my own.

(Specific layout advice is appreciated too.)

Are you trying to make it so that areas share borders, thus enhancing the effect of transitioning to adjoining areas?

If so, I have used Tanita's Terra Coppa to create the effect. If this is what you want, I will tell you how I do it. I can do an area overlap in about 10 minutes.

If you can get ahold of nicethugbert, he seems to be the resident expert on using YATT and getting large areas converted for NWN2 use.

Looking at nicethugbert's magic numbers, I think if I have the size of each area in mind, say 32x20, and the size of my grid, say 3x2= 6 areas, then I can look up the pixel size that will first yeild 3 32x32 areas (673), then that which will yield 2 20x20 areas (337), so my super map height map dimensions would be 673x337, which would yield 6 32x20 areas.

Let's see...

You are correct, Boozehound Blue.  But, I don't remember if YATT does non-square super maps.  There is a setting for telling YATT the size of the areas in a super area.  I don't remember if it has separate x and y adjustments.

I use this to do the grid, and it has info on how i set up photoshops grid feature, when it's done the grid in toolset correlates with the one in photoshop ( even though i scale things when i import as well as i like things being larger when i am editing them ).

I don't do super areas. but i'd assume it's based on similar numbers, except the edge of one area would be the next area instead of the margin, as the unused outer border will overlap. ( you can use terracoppa to do the same thing actually )

...but if you do use terra coppa, remember, if you have powerbar installed, it may not work. Take power bar out before use.

Yes, there is, though a message appeared that the auto-connect ability would not function for non-square areas.

YATT doesn't do a great job at demarking areas on it's supermap grid. (Can't get a screenshot for some reason, but the layout doesn't look symmetrical.)

Of course, if I'd like of my sample image to be entirely walkable space and maintain its ratio, so...

I've used TerraCoppa before. I probably could have done what I wanted by now area by area...

I make a grid in GIMP. Then I import it into L3DT to use as an overlay. This lets me see the border and walkable regions before I import into the toolset.

To do that you'll need the area size info Brian provided, and possibly my magic numbers too.
