As for the character itself, I think he tries way too much to dodge your questions and in the end you never know what makes him tick.

Yeah, but Shepards the boss, and she don't like them

Well okay I admit he is a little bit too boring actually.
I liked Kaiden and Ashley, they were pretty balanced out (although Kaiden should have had a side quest and should have had more moments where he could share his opinions and let us get to know him....)
I could relate to Jacob coz i have a loser of a father too. But at all other times after his side mission, Jacob was boring as hell

Yet he ends everything with 'too much red tape so I quit'. Seriously?! Nothing interesting, funny or whatever happened when you did all that?
In ME1 Garrus is much the same with why he quit C-Sec, but the difference Garrus went on to tell you the story of Dr. Heart which illustrated why he got fed up with C-Sec. It allowed me to relate to his reason for quiting and also showed what type of person Garrus is.
If I worked with a guy like Jacob I'd just say 'hello' and ''later'' to him and not even bother talking to him on breaks.

I really hope he is back for at least an extended period in ME3 (rather than one mission)...would like to see the interaction between him and Ashley (since they were both on Eden Prime) or him and Kaidan (since they are so similar).

How is he boring?LPPrince wrote...
Kaiden DID have those moments. He just wasn't super interesting. Jacob was even less interesting.
Funny thing is, right before ME2, I realized Kaiden isn't as boring as I thought he was. Still not even close to as interesting as Ashley, but I learned to respect him.
Jacob is worse. God is he worse. Maybe in ME3 if there's someone even more boring than Jacob I'll think he doesn't suck.
Maybe there should be a squadmate who just never talks. Never even does anything.

Doesn't change the fact that they are the best choices for those positions. The only other companion with leadership skills is Garrus and no way an alien would be in charge of a Cerberus vessel and command Cerberus personnel.wildannie wrote...

Reason you don't get the details is because this is all explained in ME: Galaxy. I disagree with needing to buy an iphone game to better understand a character but that's the path Bioware took. You can always watch a playthrough on youtube or read the synopsis on wikipedia like I did. Jacob saved the Citadel from a deadly Batarian plot, the guy is as much a hero as Shep, except no one knows about what he did.eternalnightmare13 wrote...
He had the potential of being interesting since he was a Corsair and in the Alliance and in Cerebus.

The brother needs to pick up some armor and an assault rifle, though. Spandex and shotguns just don't cut it.

Though I admit that when I wanted a play through with a love interest that died on the suicide mission, I chose Jacob for one of my FemSheps. Poor bastard was the only one that got offed. I still feel bad about it.

He was a breath of fresh air considering practically every other squad
mate in Mass Effect 2 is really wacky and not normal/has some sort of
problem...
That's exactly why he's boring. He's just a regular grunt who's there to do the job.

I mean to hear some people rag on Jacob the way they do you would think he pimp slapped their moms or something.
I really hope Bioware doesn't do him wrong because of a bunch of stupid forumites and their massive hate for one of the only non stererotypical positive Black characters in gaming...it would be a shame.

I'd rather have that then people dumping their problems in my lap. "Waaaah fix me Shepard, I'm broke adn only YOU have the power to do so."Perfecti0nist wrote...

I would be interested in running a "least favorite character" poll, but I can't see any way to start one without it erupting into trolling or flamewars. I don't think that Jacob would win that... I think that one of the female love interests would have the highest likelihood of victory, there.
Edit: screw it, I made one. Let's see if this can work without creating drama.

Personally, I liked both of them. Whenever I ask others to explain why they think those characters are boring, they almost always tell me "Everyone else is much more interesting," so that there is your answer. It's just irrational dislike for the most part. Hyperbole is the weapon of choice for haters.
