You will ultimately have to choose between Anders and Sebastian, but all the other characters you can keep on your side under certain circumstances.

Indeed! If he wasn't called Anders in-game, I might've thought he was a new character. They really developed him badly. It would've been much better if we met the happy go-lucky Anders in Act 1. Then he slowly becomes paranoid and descends into madness throughout the game. The writers really dropped the ball here.

He was still a jokey Anders like in Awakening, but I do agree that more should've been present. He could've at least crack a joke about Justice every now and then. And then Justice interrupts.
*starts thinking of a way that could play out*

After Dissent, you can accuse Justice of being a demon and then Anders will ask if he's too dangerous to be around. If you agree, Anders leaves the PC's party for good (but will appear just long enough to play UBL to the Kirkwall Chantry).

Oh god I never once told him to leave (I knew you could, I just never did) but the fact that you can tell him to and he still shows up is just.......

i sided with mages but i always kill anders in every playrun i do, no matter what! he is useful but i hate his new personality, so far worse companion ever, plus i thought he lived long enough already so i wanted to let Sebastian take his place.
Frankly, I wish there was an option to kill off both! They're both useless to me. If i'm playing as a mage, I just take the SH spec. If i'm a warrior/rogue, Bethany can do the healing and deal damage. Varric deals way more damage than Man-Leliana. Not to mention I despise both of them. Anders is too much of a whiner. While Sebastian was similar to Leliana(they both preach incessantly and both have a condescending attitude. Except I liked Leli, simply because we had girl talks.

Yep.
To be fair, you can tell Morrigan to leave whenever you like in Origins and *she* conveniently shows up to offer the Dark Ritual, but at least you can still tell her to get stuffed. Anders...you got no choice with him.

Choice. Something that was severely lacking in DA2(aside from handing over Isabela to The Arishok, which I always happily do.

But I kill Anders because Justice pretty much demands it.
I usually play a mage anyway because I just love the idea of a Chantry seeker, umm, seeking out a mage for help. The chantry seeking help from a mage is a concept I find deliciously ironic.
