Visualize something like a map of Middle Earth, that begins as a blank canvas but for the Shire and fading features immediately surrounding, As one explores areas, those visible features expand.
Depending on the scale, clicking on a feature can then reveal a ''zoom-in' pane of that area, where one can have more detail, map points, etc. (standard area map detail, either from pre-made screenshot or area map screen manipulation if possible, which afaik is not...or something else).
Dumb idea?
UI idea: world/super area map portion reveal based on exploration

Damn forum logged me out and ate my post. OK, here's it condensed:
1) Sounds cool.
2) Should be (broadly speaking) possible.

Have a blank map and spawn flat placeables with bits of the map on them as the player reaches close enough to see that bit of map. Spawn the usable placeable bits like mountains at the same time. When the player clicks on the relevant usable thing like a mountain, spawn a placeable with an image of the area as it's texture.

I was thinking this would be done in a World Map sense, a la the World Map GUI but perhaps with a "fog of war" effect on it (you could just paint black squares over it, or cut the texture into pieces and only enable a piece when that area has been discovered), but an OM-style one could work too.

Would it be possible to make something like a "Container" interface and populate it with "items" that have map tiles? it would look a little bricky though, like an Ultima map.
