My own head canon;

Ashley and Shepard were resting on seperate beds beside eachother in a hospital or med bay somewhere after defeating Saren.

"So, Ash. We got back from Ilos. What was it you wanted to tell me?"

Ash smirked, she had opened herself up that night, in more ways than one. It seemed appropriate to tell him what she wanted to say for so long, but she was worried they wouldn't make it back alive. Now it seemed a bit.. silly.

"Oh, just that you're an animal in bed." she chuckled.

Shepard wasn't laughing. He grabbed her hand, looked deeply into her eyes, and said,

"Ash, I love you."

Yeah, I'm a sucker for that kinda crap.
