Hey, I get that my enthusiasm is a little much, but it's all in good fun! :P

But on the "Another chat/social web/etc..." I hear you. I didn't feel like it at first, but I caved in
and thought what the f*** and joined. I figured that if I ever have a reason not to come to these
forums anymore, I'd have another place to quickly take part in discussions with NWNers elsewhere.

Yeah, I guess I can understand that bit.

However, I DO NOT HAVE a CELL PHONE!  So, I can't actually verify my account, and they have no real intention of allowing the sms text messages via email.  The intention of facebook is to garner as large a database of active mobile phone users as they can, and then spam those folks with text messages.

I have a regular phone, it costs a certain amount per month, and spammers typically hang up when they hear voice mail box info... At one time in my life I had a pager... hated that damned thing, and truly did not see a purpose for it.  Company claimed they needed it to get into contact with me when I was OFF.  Well, after the 3rd time I got paged at 3am for bullcrap, I gave it back to them and told them if it was an emergency, they could friggin pick up the phone and call me.  If they got me fine, if not, then I was not available.

Worked out great after that.

These bills keep getting larger and larger, cell phones are expensive to operate.  They don't work when you have a regional power outage yet a normal phone will.  I don't need to be contacted via cell phone to be told that some friend is sitting in a line at a theater with nothing to do but bug me about it.

Hehe... I guess I am an old stick in the mud... slowly sinking deeper.  I am getting more and more resistant to change as I slowly age and I have never gotten the point about cell phones, I certainly can see a usage in an emergency, but just to chat with folks while shopping at the mall?  Nope, I can call them when I get home if I really need to.

My biggest issue is that I live in the North East Pennsylvania region, along the Apalachian mountain range... this means that cell service is spotty at best, and where my house is, on the north side of a mountain, I get no coverage at all from the nearest cell tower, so I have to drive 3 miles to get a signal... certainly not worth paying a monthly fee for a service I can't use.

Am I missing something? Why would you need to verify a Facebook account via cell phone or sms? Sure, FB has a cell phone app, but I think that most of us who use FB do so from a standard computer browser (certainly I do).

I suppose it's partly cultural. I have an iPhone, but I use it more as an iPod that has a phone built in in case I need it than I do for talking to people. I don't think I've ever come close to using my number of allocated minutes month. I also don't get the "chatting from the mall" thing, much less "Text Messaging."

You don'rt need a cell phone to verify a facebook account.

As far as texting goes...I was pretty resistant to the whole idea. Then I started using it. In a lot of ways it more convenient (and faster) than talking - especially if you need a reminder about something like what to get at the grocery store. I'll also sometime have my wife text me the time for an appointment or some such - it saves carrying around a planner.

We are sitting at 169 members, we are still passing news relating to the game to each other. If anything it is another place to draw people to one of the many linked websites to a game we all love. And I can understand Facebook is not for everyone, I just felt it was another medium to try and get the word out about NWN.

Facebook is a powerful social networking site. I am constantly amazed at the power of that.

Cheers NWNers

Just a brief update not only have we hit 350 members but the admin team made
a crucial decision over the past few days. Due to a couple of reasons I will
detail further in this post we are no longer supporting the NWN MMO on the
Facebook Community page.

We are a NWN 1 and NWN 2 focused group. This group was not initially created
for the new neverwinter mmo. After recent posts to the group page we decided
unanimously as the admin team that we wanted to be a NWN 1 and NWN 2 focused
group. We are attempting to eliminate  technical questions regarding the
NWN MMO as well as new advertisement for that game that appears on our facebook
group.  We will always welcome and attempt to help with NWN 1 and NWN 2
technical questions.

When posts about neverwinter MMO are written in the group, we will let them be
as long as they do not spam, do not advertise the game itself (advertising a
server to play is fine, so would asking where to play), ask technical questions
about the game, and the post is serious.

Generally this would mean most posts about neverwinter mmo would stay, but not
be allowed to derail the focus of the group.

I believe I joined the group just after opening a Facebook account.

Is there a way to view a serial list of all current members?    nvm. found the About tab

Is there any way to tell if a poster is involved with NWN1, NWN2 or both.. without checking their individual profile hoping to find that information?

I don't believe there is any marking system for which game you play/prefer. I wish that facebook had some form of system where users could acknowledge what game they play/prefer.

Yep you joined a while back. we are very glad to have all members join. the group functions as another outlet to announce any form of post or question.

Today I accepted the 500th member into our group. We continue to grow, we also have removed the Neverwinter mmo from our group, we no longer support it or allow posting about it.

So 500 for 3-4 years. Adding the factor of word from mouth to mouth... eh, we should be able to hit 10 000 in say 5 more years? :P    :wizard: !!!!!

Congrats on 500 members!

Ever considered expanding to the gaming oriented social networks like Raptr?

Facebook may be the biggest, but that also works against it in a few ways, like this Guardian article describes. And the company itself makes it worse by forever meddling with their privacy settings. I personally like to keep my social circles separate, and Facebook just makes it very difficult to do that.

One time I thought I was posting in a private group, but then I saw the group admin changed the group to public and it overrides my own visibility settings, so someone outside the group saw what I posted and gave it a 'Like'. Thankfully it wasn't controversial, but it was still a nasty shock, so I find myself gravitating towards the niche social networks nowadays.

According to Raptr there's 3330 active NWN players, so I think there's pretty good potential for an NWN community there. You might be able to reach people who otherwise wouldn't bother to join on Facebook - and vice versa for people on Facebook who wouldn't bother with Raptr of course.

Some of us don't want to join a social network at all, and actively eschew Facebook rather than simply not bothering to sign up.  I prefer simple forums.

I can understand this, our group functions as another source to inform others who may not enjoy going on forums. You get people who dislike one or the other. There is also those who are willing to explore not only social media but also forums.

We are merely another means to spread the word about NWN 1 + 2, we try to keep a positive tone and outlook at all times.  :)

Not saying anything against the groups, just that I've seen a sentiment here and elsewhere suggesting that if people don't sign up to a group on Facebook, then it means that either those people aren't playing the game, or they're not interested in the group's subject, or that they're too lazy to sign up.  Just wanted to represent the ones for whom those don't apply.  My best wishes for the group, of course.

I wanted to announce the fact we hit 800 members today.

We try to avoid those sentiments and we as the admin team of the group make constant referrals to other NWN sites to try and help players and hosts connect with each other. We have the outlook of promoting the game to all, our group is just another resource for those that play the game and those that used to play.

Sorry for the major delay of a reply, I missed it somehow.

Congrats on the new members. I prefer forums for online banter, so I won't be joining. I only use facebook to connect with people whose faces I have actually seen.

whose faces i have actually seen should be one of the quotes of the year. People throw away their common sense to easily when its about privacy and reality... If anyone remembers the band Kraftwerk (the model) back from the 70s and 80s they already told you that the secret services and the financial ministrys have your ID´s and more (in a song just as a sentence that seems somewhat randomly placed....)... today... lol :D

People dont even realize their own world anymore. It´s all Alice in big brothers wonderland! The SJW´s paradise rofl

If i ever need something like F...k, i will always opt fer open and non "personal data grabbing for eternity" solutions (something like Diaspora, Ello., etc.).
