Unless you do Sebastian's, or maybe Isabela's.

But instead of asking us why not just role-play a character and see where the chips fall. I didn't set out to rivalmance Merrill, it just happened and it was great.

Let's see, Cain? Where are you? Ah, there you are. EAT THIS!Merrill's Rivalmance is superior to her Friend Romance. Anders's Rivalmance (which my forth character just did) was also satisfying.

Isabela rivalry: She wants to better herself though she finds you boring.
Anders rivalry: "YOU'RE EVERYTHING THAT I HATE BUT I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU".
Fenris rivalry... I've never done it, I'm best buds with him all the time.

Merrill: trying to protect her from herself
Isabela: Wants to become a better person but thinks you're boring (really don't understand this one)
Anders: Love hate slap slap kiss. You encourage him to fight Justice
Fenris: Love hate slap slap kiss. You encourage him to stop blaming magic for his issues.

Fenris' rivalry > friendship, naturally. Anders is sweet on friendship but I still like rivalry more since him going on and on about the mages in friendship annoys me. It's part of his character yes but I still feel like slapping him once in a while
Isabela's rivalry I haven't tried yet :--D

Merrill: "You can't save me, Hawke" summed up the whole thing for me.
Isabela: Wonderful ending. Its a bit weird in Act 2 (sex scene is identical to friendship, acting on great terms and then suddenly in the next conversation thinks you're a bore).
Anders: Bugged. The ending looks both sweet and tragic on youtube, once its fixed.
Fenris: Hawt.

Friendship = putting up with their sh**
Romance is kinda similar for both I think (if we look purely at the romance additions to the chosen path)

If you hate someone you wouldn't follow them around and you sure in hell wouldn't think about what they said.

What's even worse is that Hawke twists them away from their causes by the end. Merrill's feels quite frankly emotionally abusive, and Anders' is even creepier, albeit less rage-inducing because I don't have protective instincts for Anders like I do Merrill... anyway, the whole rivalry path with Anders seems like convincing Fenris that he'd be better off as a slave.Rifneno wrote...
Rivalmances are stupid. This isn't like people with different political or religious views getting together, this is getting together with someone for whom you oppose their strongest beliefs. Anders and Merrill are both literally willing to die for their causes, but they're romantically involved with someone that actively thwarts their attempts to do what they consider more important than their own life? Not buying that.

Fenris I could be mean to, with all his whining about being a slave and hating on all forms of magic.
Isabela I'm not sure. I'd imagine she's a lot more fun to be friends with.
Anders seems like a totally asexual being. Really? Anders?

Isabella makes even less sense. She jumps your bones, gets bored with you but sticks around because you make her better? I was surprised she didn't leave my Hawke when Zeveran showed up in Act 3.
It sounds like the Fenris rivalmance actually works. Dunno about Anders, but he always dies in my playthroughs anyways.

Do not need to 'Fundamentally' disagree about the things just how to resolve them. Take two stubborn people that are attracted to each other, but each view the other as a competitor, add to this a need for the approval of others in the social sphere and you get a rivalry romance. Sometimes these relationships reach a catharsis and a lifelong union forms. Mostly it is just a bad idea and they almost level a city trying to kill each other.dgcatanisiri wrote...
I'm curious about the rivalmances, but I'm probably only ever going to go through YouTube videos of them, rather than play them myself. While I like that they get the characters to actually work through their issues instead of live with them and be blind to them, I don't see how a relationship where you disagree on fundamental levels could actually last through a seven year period.
Ain't love grand.
(apparently the sex is good)

Rivalry teaches him the faults in his beliefs, that the world is far from black and white, despite what his past has taught him, and that his hate is displaced and unhealthy.
He benefits from both, in some way. I prefer friendship path because I think it's more rewarding, especially if you're a mage, and the healthier relationship of the two.

Not completely. You can be in a friend romance with Merril and still tell her the whole thing was sort of her fault, or you can agree and say the keeper was stupid. You can get Isabella to be less of a **** in her friend romance or you can act the same way and reflect her attitude. etc etc.
