About why it wasn't included in ME1, a Bioware developer said it was due to time constraints:

As far as M/M love interests... I can say that it was planned, but as
far as I know it was cut due to time constraints. Quite frankly the
demand is small. I'm not defending it, but the choice is between a level
that everyone will enjoy and a romance that only a minority will enjoy.
We did it in Jade so we're not afraid of it; there just isn't enough
time.

I love this: "We did it in Jade so we're not afraid of it" :)

EDIT: didn't see that post quoted below before. bald man in a boat, stop trolling. Not funny.

Thanks for sharing this.
They didn't have enough time before, now they do and so they are gonna include it. Makes sense. ;)

Edit: Also, maybe the demand is a bit higher now too.

You know what would be interesting to bring back from Jade Empire? (but not in ME3, god no, in a new game/new series/new story of any franchise) Relationships involving more than one person. Whether it be three dudes, three girls or anything in between, I'd like to see them try to make a three-person relationship (actually involving all three, not your main character being with two at the same time, but the other two also showing interest in each other etc.) and do it in a way that works and is fun, emotional, cute, whatever.

That's not really something I'm interested in. I'm a one woman kind of girl. But if that floats your boat then so be it. Feel free to ask for it for future games. :P

@Nyoka: Yep, if you played a male character you could romance both Sun Lian and Dawn Star... which is kind of disturbing actually considering... *spoiler*

So, why did they lie about there being no new love interests? Bioware needs to stop caring so much about the newcomers. If you want to play a story based RPG trilogy, then you don't start with the second or third game.

You do have a point on the trilogy part … You hear that you don’t really need to play the previous game which is fine. But for those of us who do, can you reward us with in-game goodies that we would understand? After all, we fed the beast ... $$$$$ + countless hours invested - Bioware please show us some extra hugs! Posted Image
That is also why I would rather romance a character already in the game (Ash/Kaiden) then introduce someone new. It would make the story feel like a trilogy. In fact, not having either VS pre third game could make for some great 3rd act love story (straight or gay).
But that is just my 2 cents (I think I have spent 8 cents already on this thread).

I'm trying to quit this thread, but one more thing. I think it's likely that Bioware is trying to cater not to newcomers, but to people who are bigger Bioware fans than those who like only Mass Effect.

Same sex romances are possible in most of their other games. So they're catering to people who like Bioware games in general, not just Mass Effect. In fact, based on this thread, they're mostly catering to people who are fans of Mass Effect AND other Bioware games.

Basically, they're catering to the opposite of newcomers.

That wasn't really what I meant ... Bioware is saying that you don't need to play the previous games to play ME3 - that is a good thing. More sales = more potential mass effect world games.

But, I would really love a few jewels tied to ME1 & ME2 for those of us who have played all the games & DLC's ... This was not in reference to same sex by the way.

The same-sex was in the romances part ... Since it is a trilogy I would prefer my new options to be in an established character and not a last minute addition. But that is just me. I would love to play the game from 1-3 and see the story and love interest in more than the last act. The VS to me would be the best added option ... in my opinion. Posted Image

Shepard, LEGION, Mordin, Conrad Vernor, toaster, WD40, champaigne, jalepenos, and Boo, the space hamster. Good times. DAMN good times.

Only if you play as a male, then it's possible to get both Dawn Star and Silk Fox.

Yeah, the princess and the male rogue were both bisexual, though the animation fades to black before you kiss and you always wake up alone.

Yeah, but it's (in my opinion) not handled all that well. It really is just there so players can eat two cakes...or however that metaphore (is that even how you write it? god, my english fails me) goes.
Not that relationships were all that deep in Jade Empire anyway, it wasn't nearly as good as it is nowadays as far as I'm concerned, but while I genuinely liked the romance my female hero had with...Silk Fox? (don't know the english names, played JE in german), the solution of the three-person-romance for male characters is just...fanservice that lacks any impact. I'd want it to feel like three characters would have genuine feelings for each other. JE gave us "okay, you want both of us, fine, so we will share you", which, hey, to me as a straight male is a nice fantasy and great fuel for a hot dream, but not exactly the conclusion I'd wish for.

That was some bull right there.

But the kiss animation was horribly clunky with the mxm so I can see why they blacked it out.

And oddly it's the only BW game where you can threaten someone with rape. :?

Ahmmm, thanks, I missed out on that. Maybe I'll take a break from Mass Effect!

I was so sad I couldn't romance Dawn Star though, she has the most lovely voice. And then I got ME1 and Maeko Matsuo had her voice and she was lovely too, but I couldn't romance her either. I want to nibble Kim Mai Guest's voice dammit!

I think it's a great idea, and I hope Bioware doesn't punk out on it. It's a great example of actual Inclusion. Real character customization. I appreciate that level of inclusion as a woman that's had to play waaayyy to many games as dude...and I better like it. So, when I discovered the level of customization available in ME it was so refreshing. To me this is just another layer of inclusion that's really overdue.

It's your choice. You don't have to be a gay or lesbian Shep. just like you don't have to have brown eyes, or blue eyes. But, man, for someone that knows what it's like to always be marginalized..to the point that you expect it, this level of detail, of choice, is greatly appreciated.

That's probablly a good thing. With the awesome button in full effect, they'd probably explode.

Yeah, that was messed. However, the f/f romance with Silk Fox is one of my favorite BioWare romances ever.<3

Yes Princess Lian x FemSpirtMonk was awesome. I liked the fact that even when you go back to court Lian wasn't taking any crap about who she chose to be with.

Only if it's accurate. It cracks me up that people who are virulently opposed to anything related to homosexuality somehow bridle at being called homophobic.

No pretense at civility at this point. Although as a point of reference it does seem like that fight for the love side is getting pretty heavy with the rage....

Edit: Also cracks me up that anyone who would rather male shep not be bi-sexual is virulently anti-homosexual. Logic fail.

So, you think it's perfectly reasonable to prevent other people from playing a gay or bisexual Shepard, even though you can still play your Shepard the way you want? You really think that's reasonable and fair? What. Ever.:pinched:
