The way ME1 played out leads to the assumption that Ash is for male sheps and Kaiden is for femsheps. Eden Prime with the beacon exploding for example.
It's not specifically stated, but everyone is led to believe that both are straight. Hence it would be a minor retcon for these characters methinks.

I don't think it would be for ME2 LIs though.

It's just assumptions though.  There are some MaleSheps who didn't romance Ash in ME1 and FemSheps who didn't go for Kaidan.  Choices, choices everywhere!

Also, don't let this turn into another slingfest.  Just report the trolls and keep on topic.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new and old LI's being s/s now, I just don't think it would work well with Kaiden and Ashley.

I don't care if they're gay, as long as they get the job done.

As long as none of them jump down my throat about it like that it shouldn't really matter.  Whoever is made bisexual/homosexual shouldn't show it unless pursued by the same gender. That way everyone's view is right. Nobody would be wrong in saying they are straight even if they can be romanced by both genders, because it never happens in your game.

That's the way I'm seeing it, anyway.

That's totally understandable if you just think it seems a little off, given that who gets rescued from the beacon and stuff like that changes to be the LI Shep can pursue. We're all kinda attatched to them and all, and then there's the cut s/s lines, but anyone (old or new) who is written well is welcome in my book.

This.

Threatening not to buy ME3 because of optional romance content will really make BioWare listen to concerns.

What? Having a "strong and deep issue" with male to male romance, which doesn't even have to be taken part of, just the content sitting in the game making a person not buy it, is not homophobia?

it is but most of you are calling anyone who doesnt agree with you a homophobe its ridiculous.

I know about the cut s/s lines, but I don't think they removed that to appeas fox news if you get what I mean. I reckon they realised it didn't really fit in well and didn't have time to implement it better.

Some people see bullies in differing opinions and some people are bullies without them even realising.

@jeweledleah, thanks for taking the time to write so well reasoned a response! I really appreciate the effort. See, that's what we need in this thread: Reasons!!!

I picked the VS example because it was the easiest thing to do if you want people to talk about gay relationships as if they were heterosexual relationships. I did it not to say "the VS should be bi", but rather to say "a gay relationship and a heterosexual relationship are no different, and if you disagree [not you specifically, jeweledleah, it's a general "you"], look at what you wrote about it three minutes ago when you thought you were talking about heterosexual Shepard, but in fact you wasn't".

Now a few comments about your post. To me, in ME1 they are friends and nothing more, there were no sexual tension, no "liking", nothing. Only bro stuff. I don't believe characters have deep secrets, I see them as pretty straightforward, sincere. Someone suggested Liara mind-controls Shepard through chemicals yesterday and I thought that was silly, it would imply the character presented to us is a lie. The same applies to the VS, they are like they are shown to us in ME1.

This however doesn't mean they can't feel something for Shepard later on. It happens all the time, and it has already happened in ME2 with Garrus. I thought the Garrus romance was excellent, very down to earth, no big dramatic scenes, no corny speeches. It's a romance between people who were friends, something that happens with more frequency than what movies and telly would want us to believe. I went throught it myself. No big deal. In fact, I'm thinking right now that I don't seem to know even one couple who were not friends before. I'll PM you a real life example. In my opinion, the same thing that happened between Garrus and Femshep could happen between the VS and Shep. The "whoa, I never looked at it that way... I have to think about it" is the most natural thing in the world. Now, they don't have to approach the romance in that specific way, they don't even have to make the VS bi at all, they can choose other squaddies; I'm only saying it's something that can be written in a way that feels natural, of that I'm sure.

About the no love after Horizon thing, wouldn't that apply to heterosexual relationships, too? As you well said, you meet again and start building trust again.

I was feeling pessimistic too a while ago, but then this announcement happened and now I can't help feeling optimistic! I can't believe Bioware is doing this for real. It has restored my faith in them! We can only wait to see how it will work out...and have the pikes and torches ready if it works out badly

Going by this line of thinking, whoever is made straight also shouldn't show it unless pursued by the opposite gender.

Guys—somebody get Casey Hudson on the phone. Somebody on the Internet thinks he knows why they initially cut s/s lines from ME1. Stop the presses, we have to go back to the drawing board with the s/s stuff now. Sorry for the inconvenience, folks. :(

I'm pretty sure most don't. Isn't that the line of reasoning for making certain characters gay? Because they never showed signs of def being one way. Contradicting yourselves eh?

The point I was trying to make was that they really shouldn't show anything about their orientation unless romanced. It shouldn't matter otherwise, and everyone will be happy.

lul wut? Jumped the gun a bit there.
They have cut s/s dialogue in ME1, true.
They probably didn't remove it for no reason so it seems pretty clear to me that the writers didn't think s/s relationships would work for that character in that game at the time it had to be shipped.

Why else would they do it?

That theme you have going, of putting words into people's mouths? 'tis your one true marketable skill as far as I know.

Hmm. Hmm. There's a little something known as "ninjamances" that some of us here have heard of. For anyone who is dumb or is playing dumb, those occurences come about if we're simply nice to Ashley, Kaidan, Jack, Miranda, Jacob, and Thane. All of them were purported to be str8 when ME1 and ME2 were shipped off. All of them couldn't stop oozing onto opposite-sex Shepards.

But I know where you're coming from. To you, those heteronormative homophobic interactions were "regular people" and not anything to do with throwing themselves at us. Omg, they weren't overselling straightness at all. Right, right. Whatever you say.

I am not buying it because of the content in the game . Even though it is optional its stil content with in the game. I have no problem with female and female sex . I do have a strong and deep issue with male and male sex. That is why I am refusing to by this game .

Oh ExtremeOne, the more you post the more I think your a parody of the enraged video game consumer.  You're like pure unadulterate satire,  like Anne Coulter.  You can deny it all you want,  I know your secret... your actually a rational person shining the light on fan rage.

first off Anne Coulter is someone I hate with a passion.  Oh this issue has enraged me but the best way deal with that is not to buy the game based on the content in the game..
