Asari take on a form that is appeasing to humans. They look different to Turians and Salarians. To them, human women do not look like Asari.

thats impossible.

why would they look different to different people in a picture or hologram?

Where in the game does it say any of what you just said? You're stating all of this as if it were fact, and it's simply not.

Where in the game does it state that none of this is true?

It is simply a resolution to the argument you guys are having as to why Asari don't favour women.

But it's a hypothesis you're inferring from overheard dialogue, not something that's stated unequivocally as fact in the game. You can't use that as a definitive argument to resolve something. It might be your opinion, but the game doesn't state this outright as fact. You simply overheard characters speculating about it and drew your own conclusions. That's not scientific evidence.

It sounds like you're treating asari as if they're female humans, and while your statement would be logical for a human species without males, the asari are a completely different species and we don't know that they have the same thought process as humans would in the same situation. Given their natural biotics and their ability to merge nervous systems, I imagine that external appearance would be given much less consideration for an asari than it would for a human female. I can see that human females who prefer asari would do so for visual reasons, but I would not assume the reverse was true, because we don't know the mind and motives of the asari as well as we do humans'.

You are correct, they are alien, but they are the closest to humans in appearance, manerisms, and even in emotions than any other species in the ME universe. It's not really a stretch to come to conclusions from our human perspective, even if we don't really know "enough" about them, and in fact I would say it would be common that humans would come to these conclusions.  As I said, these are just my opinions, not everyone will agree or disagree, and thats ok, I don;t hold any lesser opinion of anyone for not agreeing with me.

Context would be good for this Jesse Houston tweet, I kind of recommend against Twitter rampages in general due to the oversimplified nature of the communication.

this is how i use twitter ... it's what i do ... i'm big enough and ugly enough to handle it

So what was the context of the tweet? What was it in reference to?

I always think of Twitter as overhearing half of a person's telephone conversation, sprinkled in with some random statements aimed at no one in particular. That's one reason I don't really use Twitter.

I responded with this tweet "WTF My MShep is in a gay/genderqueer relationship with Liara?! I dont
think the straight male gamers are going to take this news well"

Shortly after that it seems the tweet was deleted, at the least I can't find it anymore.

do we share the same brain? i also said that means manshep has been in a genderqueer relationship with liara this whole time (among other things ... it took me 3 tweets to say what i wanted)

(do you mean his tweet was deleted? i still see it, and here, in context: http://twitter.com/#...854108218785792)

Okay, Vasir and random merc don't look like a fanservice. but Aria and Samara? They both have pretty revealing outfits and

you know?

that said, of course they are wonderful and strong characters, but from the first glance it's really hard not to notice the things general male population would find attractive

See Asari are a trouble for me because I'm making my own one-gender race for my sci-fi story. The Asari have had a long time to get used to bi-gendered races before Humans toddled onto the Galactic stage, so their interest and interactions with males can be hand-waved away...

But for my race its a first encounter with another intelligent species period, and a bi-gendered one at that. I really cannot see them having that much sexual attraction or even interest in males.

That is whole different territory to deal with for a race that knows just one, and is quite happy with that one.

I agree that asari would view human females as the most similar to themselves in appearance, but I can't really say what affect that would have. If anything, the "pureblood" stigma might make them less attracted to human females, being as how they look the most asari-like of aliens. I would even venture to say that would apply to male humans as well, because to asari and other aliens, the "huge" differences we see in human genders might seem rather less pronounced. Asari might fixate on human hair, since it's the most obvious difference between the two species, and less on the fact that male humans tend to be somewhat larger and have undeveloped breasts. Asari might see male humans as resembling very young asari who haven't yet developed breasts, that would seem to be the closest visual reference for them, especially male humans who aren't physically imposing. For very bulky male humans like Jacob, an asari might think he looks like a cross between an asari and a turian or something, what with turians having such a massive shoulder region. In any case, I doubt that asari have the same exact feelings and perceptions that we humans have, and all sorts of things are possible regarding their thought processes in selecting mates.

Hmm I guess I just missed it when I went to look for it again. IDK about sharing the same brain but I think we've been in so many of the same threads, responding to the same arguments again and again that we may have tuned into the same wavelength :)

One thing we all have to recognize is that while humans are very visual when it comes to evaluating mates, it does not automatically follow that other species would judge us primarily on our visual appearance. Aliens could easily be more influenced by smell, sound, etc., or their visual range might not exactly coincide with human visual range, they might have the ability to see in near-ultraviolet or near-infrared, etc., which would influence how they perceive things visually to some extent.

Aria is an awesome woman that kicks ass. And she doesn't have to get up and DO anything to be such an asskicking awesome lady. To me and many other men, that is certainly more fanservicy than a "I do everything you wish for you, let me be your personal ****"-character would be.
I think fanservice is a horrible term. It essentially means "putting something in that many fans like". Romances? Fanservice. Good action? Fanservice. Epic scenes involving characters we like? Fanservice.

I was actually thinking about that with my species (Talinth), they evolved from a feline analogue, so their hearing, smell and sight are all significantly better than that of Humans. Smell plays a vital part on their social interactions, but they do value physical appearance.

Either way, they wouldn't find Humans terribly attractive regardless of which gender they're looking at.

Hmm, culture clash?

I don't like that they are forcing this down our throats. Where if you don't "come out", then someone else will anyways.

I'm not saying I don't like gay people or whatever, but I feel like Shepard is already established as a heterosexual figure, and the fact they are just now introducing this in ME3 when the Reapers are invading...it's just dumb.

"Hey guys, I know were fighting the Reapers and stuff, and everything is going to hell but...I'm gay!"

Really?

I thought it was more the asari pheremone just happened to draw attention to whatever the other species found attractive.  For humans it'd be boobs, for a turian whatever approximates fringe...etc..

@Maugrimm
@gtez Well if Liara isn't a girl/woman/female then from the perspective of MShep their relationship is at the very least genderqueer nay?

The interesting thing would be, do they react to the entire species the same way or would that somehow react to preference? I mean, what if someone liked legs, faces, ass, shoulder-neck area (what? I like that)? For that matter, what if a human was into blue skin and those..head things?

I think, regardless, there are 'plot holes' in the asari being attracted to those that don't look much like them.  They did evolve for milenia just mating with other asari.  Given that there does seem to be a physical component to mating as well as the mental magic it would make sense to me that their would be a physical component of attraction as well.

What concerns me is that these potential problems are hand-waved away as 'no biggie' as they benefit a hetero-sexual pairing, while anyone trying to support a claim that a human LI could be bisexual gets attacked pretty harshly by some around here, and this potential bisexual human must 'totally make sense as bi' or it's no good....it's all or nothing here....  It's heteronormativity at work, of course, but I don't particularly like it much.

I added the following before any replies:

@gtez I suppose I should specify that genderqueer means not adhering to 'standard' gender roles, it can;t be a heterosexual relationship

I realize it's not a great explanation but I had 140chars to work with :)
