Actually we have dueling quotes and frankly I don't know who to believe, there are reasons to go with both.

I didn't work on ME1 but I would venture to say that most of the developers feel that Liara/Femshep is an F/F relationship. I don't know if the "she's an asari" thing was ever intended to take away from the F/F aspect (since I wasn't around when the idea was put together) but nevertheless, she was intended as the gay female love interest.

As far as M/M love interests... I can say that it was planned, but as far as I know it was cut due to time constraints. Quite frankly the demand is small. I'm not defending it, but the choice is between a level that everyone will enjoy and a romance that only a minority will enjoy. We did it in Jade so we're not afraid of it; there just isn't enough time.

Both Shepard voice actors recorded both sides of the romance. The romance dialog was included in the main follower conversation file, and ultimately, it was considered faster just to have the actor do a take on every dialog line, regardless of whether it was one that would ever fire in game, than to spend part of the VO session trying to figure out whether a given line was on the romance track or not.

Once the lines were recorded, there was a brief high-level discussion about whether we should make Kaiden and Ashley bisexual, since the lines were already there. The leads decided not to do it. The lines work on a
technical level, but they didn't do justice to the characters and  sounded very strange sometimes. Beyond that, there were questions about  having to do a different cutscene for different genders.


But to be clear, it was never part of the plan. It was only briefly considered after the lines were recorded, and it was only recorded because it was easier and faster than marking some lines as "Hale only records".

That was posted 06-22-2008, 09:04 AM on the Penny Arcade forums by Patrick Weekes one of the writers.

I would go with an actual writer who worked o an game quote, personally. I haven't seen that quote before.

he does say that it was the lines that they recorded specifically, that didn't do characters justice, so its still possible to add the subplot in for ME3 in a believable way, but... well, lets just wait and see what happens in ME3

And if it made no sense of Kaidan's "characterization." then it doesn't make sense now.

Hey Vega does technically have a description. A steroid pumped soldier. (Which I hope is toned down to a fit but normal bodies soldier. Do not need Gears of War in my ME3 thanks.)

I remember back when Thomas Roy said that. That was a few months before ME2 came out. No one could figure out if he just let it out that there's no M/M in ME2, or if was just talking about ME1.

Here's a quote from Chris L'Etoile (Stormwaltz) about it. He wrote Ashley and parts of Kaidan.

When the audio department recorded Shepard's dialogue, they accidentally recorded all
the romance dialogue with both Mark Meers and Jennifer Hale. Our intent
was that they would only recorded the appropriate actor for the
appropriate romance - i.e. Meers with Ash and Liara, Hale with Kaidan
and Liara.



All that superfluous dialogue appears to have been left the disc
(I haven't confirmed it personally). So it may be possible, with
modding, to make a male Shepard romance Kaidan, and a female Shepard
romance Ash.

Either way Chris and Patrick's stories do not jive!  If Thomas was talking about ME1 then we have 3 conflicting stories

I just don't see the previously established Lis becoming Shepsexual. I know everyone wants their cake and to eat it too, but I just don't feel it would work. The article someone linked earlier (http://calitreview.com/15594) more or less spells out my meaning.

I however am not opposed to s/s in the least bit (nearly every other Bioware game has had it). I just think it would be better to apply it to those who weren't Lis in previous games. Whether that be Kal'reeger, Joker, James Vega or any other non LI from previous games (or new for that matter).
I'm also of the opinion that much of the negativity of the forums would go away if it was handled this way.

That's probably true. This does seem like the better solution. I guess pragmatic compromises would make most people happy.

I'm still hoping on Tali at least, but that means Garrus will probably have to be too since they're like directly related...Same if Ash or Kaidan is, the other has to be. Miranda and Jacob...Etc, you get the picture.
