And that's what I like about the ME franchise. These games have attention for things like that. Remember the assignment where you had the choice to switch off the life support system of a brain dead man? That is of course about euthanesia. In my country already accepted and part of reality, but in many other countries still controversial. You got no experience points for that assignment, BTW, and there was no paragon or renegade penalty. So, the game didn't point any moral fingers. But it did make you think about the issue. That's cool.javierabegazo wrote...

I don't mind non-hetero relations. It's a good thing that BW takes a stance on the issue. I think there are already too many homophobes in the world who dictate their unrealistic fear to others. If a game can turn some heads (even if it is one) then that's cool. Messages in story telling are not bad. They are part of it and gives it depth. And the message is not that hard to follow: Don't judge people on what they are. You won't get infected. And when properly implemented in the game, you can simply refuse the pixel romance.
Compared to most here I am an old guy and when I was young homosexuality was frowned upon and those people were ridiculed. So without thinking I did the same. About 30 years ago I met this girl who was fun to be around and it turned out she was lesbian. That made me scratch my head, but I couldn't deny that she was fun. Insecure as I was I asked her about the ins and outs and she helped me understand it a bit. I don't think I was gentle in my approach. But it all worked out in the end. The cool part is that I still see her from time to time and we are good friends. I still feel a bit stupid and guilty about how I responded in those days. I know what homophobes are, because I have been one. That fear hurts more people than one might think. And like any fear you can overcome it. Educate yourself. Read about it.

Male shep shouldn't be gay. or bi, whatever.
Pray tell, why does it bother you so?
Why does MShep (as opposed to any other Shep?) being gay or bi bother you so?
What about it makes you uncomfortable? Clearly it makes you uncomfortable. It's ok. We're here to help.
You (or if not you, several posters on here) want Shepard to all of a sudden be gay/bi.
I don't.
I have evidence as to why he shouldn't be.
You just want him to be.
I don't get this reasoning at all.
Shepard is a renegade if you decide to play him that way. He's a paragon if you decide to play him that way. That doesn't mean that allowing shepards to be renegades makes all shepards renegades.
My main Shepard is a vanguard. Giving me the option to play as a Soldier doesn't make my Shepard not a vanguard. My Shepard is straight. Giving me the option to romance Liara doesn't make her not straight. My Shepard is a woman, giving me the option to play as a man doesn't make my Shepard a man.
Giving me the option to play as a gay Renegade Soldier does not make my straight Paragon Vanguard into a gay Renegade Soldier.

Lack of evidence one way does not equal positive evidence for another.
In yesterday's thread, I saw some people say something along the lines of:
"at no point does shepard say that he is straight. Therefore, he can be gay/bi."
"Can be gay/bi" is not the same as "is gay/bi". It's still a character customization option. A particularly optional option, I might add.
People were using the lack of "straight evidence" to make a conclusion about his sexuality.
Actually, people are using the lack of "straight evidence" to NOT make a conclusion about his sexuality, i.e., that he is automatically straight.
But i digress. It's clear in this thread I am outnumbered, and that's fine. I've expressed my opinion, and you all have yours.

That should apply across the board.
Agreed! I do not want any more stumbling into any romances, period.
Except the sexy/cute kind of awkward clumsy stumbling, but still. No more ninjamance!

You can't argue with that kind of testimony because it makes sense. If a dude is surrounded by hot blue alien chicks who literally mind-sex you "for the mission", a sporty and cute gunnery chief with a decidedly flirtatious demeanor, a smokin' hot ice queen with a nifty accent, a tattooed bad girl with a gorgeous face, and an ad'awwable quarian girl— and he's not even banging the freaky yeoman with Donald Trump hair—HE'S GAY. Hate to break it to you.
Or he's asexual. Someone please think of the asexuals.
you know what floors me? that this... person is stereotyping the **** out of both gay and straight people and everyone else is either ignoring it or cheering her on.
becasue straight men cannot possibly keep it in their pants when it comes to their subordinants, becasue they cannot possibly take sexual relationships seriously or wear whatever armor is given to them, becasue you know - it actualy matters what color your armor is when it comes to your sexuality.
because gay men must act a certain way and straight men must act a certain way, or have their sexuality and masculinity questioned.

Nah, if he wanted to be a girl, he could have done that while rebuilding his Alliance Personnel Database entry.

Are you really championing breaking stereotypes, Leah? Because I don't really think that's what you're doing. You know as well as I do that I am using hyperbole/wit/sarcasm/humor to illustrate a point, a point you're actually not directly addressing, I might add.
Sure, Celibate Shepard might just be a respectful dude. Phoenix-armor wearing Shepard might just be worried about the tech damage bonus. But nothing in the game "proves" that Male Shepard is 100% Heterosexual. Not the lack of men to flirt with, not the plethora of women to flirt with, nothing. That was my point. But nice misdirect.

"Im not going to pretend to have a fetish for humans, but this isnt about that. This is about us."
Im sure this has been said before but its about an emotional attachment to Shepard. And Im sure whoevers playing the game can choose between a bro-mance with Garrus, or a romance with Garrus. Thankfully I have way more faith in the ME team than the DA2 team and they wont let the two bleed together. I hope.
I agree with the thought that it is a bad decision if it hurts the depth of the character. If it hurts the content and romance with a character, but Ill stay optomistic and finally be able to play a maleshep with Garrus for more than just a bro-mance. Though I do now prefer femshep voiceacting =D

I'm not saying that shepard is heterosexual only, on the contrary - shepard can be anything including a dragqueen, who only dresses in uniform because that's the alliance dress code. this would be the whole point I'm trying to make - sexuality is in NO way tied to personality or appearance. and stereotyping it, trying to claim that as a proof of certain leanings? is doing more harm then good.
Which is exactly what I've been trying to say this whole time. People are saying that Shepard is automatically straight, with no possibility of being gay or bisexual, just because he only has the option to flirt with women in the first two games. That makes no sense. I have been trying to illustrate this point, which should be self-evident, for MONTHS, and yet every five minutes another person drops in and says the exact same thing. Sometimes you have to use a bit of color commentary to get a point across, you know? People just don't listen when you use dry logic.

Exactly, people are fearing for nothing. They will NOT bring in the gay stereotype in, as your characters will stay the same personality wise. The only problem I would see with gay or bi characters in the games is if they are too fruity, but I really doubt that Bioware would put such stereotypical characters into Mass Effect. So I really don't see much of a problem.

I am chastened. I shall never stereotype again. I will only use one hand on my laptop keyboard at a time, I'm so afraid of stereotyping from now on.
