I recommended Mass Effect to a friend, so he bought both 1 and 2. He tried to install 1 today. First time it worked until he was asked to change to disc 2 which wasn't accepted. He tried again, this time installation was cancelled after a few minutes. When he tried again with admin rights, it just shut down after confirming the key. I'm slightly confused because I never had any problems with the game. Also, I feel a bit bad for recommending a game he may not be able to play.

System:

Win7 64bit
Intel Core i5-2500 CPU @ 3.0 GHZ  3.60 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX460 SE
4GB

Disable UAC, and run in XP compatibility mode. If that doesnt work, use the cd key to download it via EADM.

Yead, EADM won't work because ME1 doesn't support it. He tried compatibility mode for XP and Vista, no luck. Disabling UAC didn't help either.

Does it give an actual error message, or just quit to Windows with no hint as to whats the problem?

No error message. Apparently it just cancels the installation after entering the key without any comment/message.

Disk, Running as Admin, Running in Compatibility mode, The only message I'm getting is "Installation Cancelled, The Installation of Mass Effect has been cancelled. To run the installer again, please run Setup." I then run the setup from the disk and the same message pops up.

I was afraid of that. That version of the game has given us more woes than all the others combined, and its normally install problems.
You can try the manual install method as listed here;
http://ve3d.ign.com/...all-Mass-Effect

Note: You will need to install the 1.02 patch between steps 6 and 7.

It seems that the disk is bad, over 7000 errors when extracting with both WinRAR and 7zip. :\\

Another thing you can try is to use a disk-copying utility to make an ISO image of the disk, andthen use a program like Daemon Tools to mount that ISO image as a virtual DVD drive, and try and install from there.

Apart from that, I can only suggest getting in contact with EA support, and see if you get a kind hearted support rep who will add the game to your account on Origins (which will be the same as your account on here), and allow you to download it digitally.
