I want to record some missions and post them on youtube with commentary.  What is a good program for doing this?  And also, what is a good program for editing the recordings?

Like I said in the other thread, I use fraps. Can't say I've tried other programs for it, but it's pretty quick and easy to use. Make sure you have a good computer and lot of space though.

I haven't edited any of my videos yet so I can't help you with that part. Maybe when I have some more time I'll edit them.

I'm also using fraps but there is other software available.

VirtualDub is an easy and free video editor, but if you want to add music, transitions and so forth, you'll be better off with more advanced software like Sony Vegas, Power Director, Adobe Premiere etc. All have free trial versions available which you can use for a month - a good way to find out which program you prefer.

Not interested in music or transitions.  Just need to be able to record gameplay and my own commentary.  This would be less stylized and more of "how to" kind of format.

I was thinking about this yesterday when a poster was asking about how to complete the shutter portion of archangel's recruitment mission on insanity.  I realized it'd be a lot easier to show how I did it than to tell how I did it.

It might be easier to show how you did it, as opposed to tell them how you did it.
It's also probably easier to tell them how you did it, as opposed to filming, editing, and adding commentary.

But all the power to ya. I love user videos.

If you are using Windows, Windows Movie Maker (or Windows Live Movie Maker in Vista/7) will allow you to add music and commentary to video captures, though I believe you have to record the commentary separately if it isn't part of the video capture, and add it in when you're editing the video. Also, there may be some extra steps required if recording in HD. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of an Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas suite, but it's free with Windows.

I may just have a crappy hard drive or something, but I have fraps and what happens a lot for me is the game play is relatively smooth, but when I check the video it lags hard, many times the sound keeps going but the video stops until it skips ahead a 5 or 6 seconds. If I reduce my game play to 720P it seems to be a lot smoother, but I have a hard time playing when it looks like that. A year of playing on a higher resolution indoctrinated me into a certain view.

I run ME2 at 1920x1080, but I set fraps to record at half size. The videos still look pretty good, but this way it's playable and the videos are smooth. This is on a laptop, by the way.

I tried that and still had the same problem with the videos lagging, not sure what I am doing wrong or what part of my computer is sucking.

Not sure. This is a laptop so it's not super powerful. But it's quite new and the hard drive is pretty fast.

This could be because the video that FRAPS writes to the hard drive is completely decompressed, so that it can write in real time. Have you tried turning the footage into a video, and, if so, does the video still have the choppiness to it?

EDIT: Also, I know that my video playback in Windows Movie Maker has always been super choppy when watching the movie in program, but once I've compressed it all into a video and run it in a seperate player (I use VLC), it plays smoothly.

Sounds like a good bet yeah. If your hard drive is just a little bit slow and has to play a huge video, it could easily get choppy. Odds are the video is actually fine.

I'm looking at my videos now. The shortest on is 1:08 minutes and takes up 645 MB.

I'm waiting to get my current machine in top shape. I've been wanting to make videos for a while now. When ME3 rolls around I'll be set up for sure. I've been wanting to show off my Vandept for awhile now.

This happens because fraps makes files unconpresed, to record it as fast as it's possible and some programs can't read crude fraps files(i'm looking at you media player <_<) usually showing a static image of the footage you just recorded or something as you described. When I recorded my first video(5 years ago), I though I had done something wrong and deleted about 400gb of raw video(about 10~12 hours of gameplays) and still today I mourn this loss :crying:

Also, anyone up to make a group for video makers?

This sounds like a great idea. If there isn't one already, I'd be happy to look into creating one this evening.

Thanks Kstarler, termokanden and Aynien. I just started testing it after making it into a movie via windows movie maker and now with the compressed size of 50mb per minute it goes smoothly. I wish I had asked about this when I had first got fraps instead of giving up and deleting a bunch of footage. Now I just have to get used to my new mouse and I should be fine for making videos.

There are a number of things that could be going wrong.  First of all, does your computer have an SSD (solid state hard drive)?  If so, that can be an issue for video recording.  SSD's are blazing fast for reading information from them, but they have considerably less performance than conventional hard drives when writing large blocks of data to disk.

It could also be fraps fighting something else running in the background for both CPU time and hard drive time.

Did not know that. Will have to reconsider certain planned upgrades.

Honestly, with my I7 950 processor, 6 gigs of ram, and GTX 580, I don't see any visible in-game slowdown when recording in ME2 using my newest 3.0 SATA drive. However, I do see a difference when writing to my older 3.0 SATA drive (about a 20 FPS difference, from the high 50s to the lower 40s). While I'm sure my whole system would run faster if I had an SSD RAID 0, I don't think it will really make that big of a difference, at least as far as gaming goes. It's kind of up there with SCSI drives, in that if I could afford them I'm sure I would get them, but I don't know that the overall decrease in processing times justifies the price paid for them.

Another question about fraps.

It splits the AVI files into 3.95gb segments. I know you can join them together with another program. Is there a noticeable 'stutter' in the finished product?

Nop, there's no cut from a segment to another.
