So what's with Meredith flying around like a standard JRPG superboss at the end? Complete with her landing making huge cracks in the ground? [she weighs with armor at most 200-something lbs] and her animating inanimate objects like they could move all along [power of imagination] coupled with bizarre spinning blade moves?

You know, stuff that makes absolutely no sense.

So why'd you just take that final battle off the deep end into lala land like pretty much every JRPG ever? Just said 'screw it'?  or did you guys just want to make the final battle look cool and say 'to hell with explaining anything, let's just make the evil sword blow up and never refer back to it.]

Or was the disparaging comments made to JRPGs made by some previous designer who got replaced?

Or, *drumroll* does Varric really like JRPGs and he exxagerated the whole thing. [aka standard explanation for anything ridiculous ever]

I'd love an answer.

Edit: oh, and please, no 'it's a fantasy game it doesn't have to have logic or make any sense' responses. There is a such thing as trying to create a setting that adheres to some sort of internal consistency. If not, then I humbly demand gremlins, fairies, and eskimos in DA3.

When did "JRPG" and "anything I don't like" become synonymous?

You know, stuff that makes absolutely no sense.

Sense like slitting your wrists and transmuting blood into magical force.
Or enormous lizards breaking numerous laws of physics with their flying/firebreathing abilities.
Or teleportation portal mirrors.
Or bombs that make the hunks of building that they blew up levitate.
Etc.

Probably around the same time when people starting ignorantly grouping all Japanese RPGs into one single category.

Red lyrium is entirely new, not contradicting previous laws of the setting. Nothing is breaking internal consistency.

Heard and decided to mindlessly parrot one angry neckbeard complaining about a Final Fantasy game you probably have no experience with outside of Youtube so you can feel cool, played them all?

Nerd rage can be cute, but it starts getting exasperating when it's so obvious that you are repeating things you've heard other people say with little thought to what the words actually mean. It's a shame that having your own opinions went out of fashion.

Around the time this came out, I believe:

her animating statues is her making artificial golems minus the actual soul bound to it.

A golem is just a statue and blue lyrium plus a soul. We know that red lyrium is much more dangerous and potent than blue.

Because they were aiming for Awesomez, but they hit ridiculous and banal.

I wasn't speaking specifically to you, but for anyone who groups all Japanese-developed RPGs into a single category.  Just as there are tremendous differences in games developed by different Western companies (e.g., Bioware, Bethesda, CD Projekt, etc.), there are tremendous differences in games developed by different Japanese companies (e.g., From Software, NIS, Atlus, etc.).

You just came to the conclusion 39 minutes ago that the Meredith bit was over the top and kind of silly? (The grand leap of faith was about the only thing totally out of whack, nothing wrong with statue animations in my mind.)

Yes, I was agreeing with you?

The second paragraph is for our friendly original poster. Also, collective 'you's.

Ah, my bad.  Skipping coffee on a Monday does terrible things to me.

I kept waiting for her to cast Supernova.  I was kind of disappointed she didn't, I wanted to go grab a coke during the animation.

If I am not wrong 2H swords in reality were 5 to 6 feet in length and weigh in at about 5 to 8 pounds with crossguard of 1 foot and grip of 5 to 6 inches. Not exactly a small weapon!

Yes they were, and the classic "zweihander" was slung over the back and it's hilt was partially cut to permit easier drawing....and such weapons in times of war were commonly held outside their sheaths anyway.

Because it's probably one of Varric's exaggerations when people who shouldn't be there show up and such.

That cheapens the game IMO.  Almost any problem can be swept aside with "Varric lied".

This is precisely why they left themselves that out, I'm sure.

I wonder about that myself.

But still when I hear 'JRPG' I don't think of Big swords and Bishi hairstyles as being the defining feature. I think of a game where I don't get to create the protaganist on any level and have almost no choice in conversation or plot.

Attempting to shred apart someone else's statement based on your definition of the term seems a bit silly to me. Especially when taken out of context of the original conversation.

I was hoping she would use Celestial Host, personally.
