I just finished my first game of Dragon Age II and want to start the second one right away... I'm just not sure about my character yet and hope you can help me a bit on that topic.

I played as a male Hawke, was a warrior mainly skilled as a tank, usually chose the good route and sided with the mages in the end.
This time I want to play as a female and focus on the evil/greedy options, but I'm really not sure about my class and some other decisisons... I really can't decide whether to be a rogue or a mage. At first I preferred a mage, i want to have Carver this time (although i will take him to the deep roads) and generally like the options this class offers. I also used pretty much every companion fairly regularly except Isabela, so i want to use her a lot next time which means there is no need for another (melee-)rogue.
On the other hand i'd like to side with the Templars and that would be pretty strange with a mage. Have any of you tried an anti-mage-mage before ;)? Is it a good experience or does it just make for strange situations and doesn't really fit the atmosphere? It would also suck that I'd be stuck with Bethany again and won't have a chance to try our Carver,
And gameplay-wise, I've never played a rogue in any of the DA games so far. Just give me your experiences how you like this class in general and how it feels playing it, especially compared to the mage-class and regarding possible party-combinations.
Romance shouldn't be too important this time. I started something with Isabela last time but ended up romancing Merrill. With female-Hawke i probably wanna go for the Isabela-Zevran combo and then decide if i romance Isabela or Fenris.

Is there generally any combination of the above situations that offers the best experience in your opinion? Evil-anti-mage-daggerloving-Hawke-with-an-apostate-sister oder Just-as-evil-mage-Hawke-with-a-templar-brother?

Thanks!

My last playthrough was as a mage, and I sided with the templars. There were a few more dialogue options as a mage...Meredith makes mention of it a time or two, as does Anders and Fenris. There are probably other instances as well, but I'm not thinking of them at the moment.

I enjoyed playing as a mage (it was my first time; normally I play as a rogue). I especially liked the force mage specialization. If you roll it right, you can run into a room and pretty much wipe the place clean before any of your companions even make it inside.

Played a male rogue 1st time through and sided with the mages, romanced Isabella. Had a blast! Roues are a heap of fun. But this time through decided male (once again) mage and there's actually quite a few instances where you are recognized as a mage. Not always but quite a lot. I can say that so far you can play a 'good' mage that's pro-mage and have a couple certain instances go down role playing-wise that would feasibly make your Hawke believable as a pro-Templar in the end. Like, loves order, hates blood magic, rivalmance Merril........... etc. Don't know if you tried sarcastic Hawke yet, but that's super fun if you haven't done so so far :D

Thanks for your answers so far! Still not sure about it so more input would be appreciated. I've never tried a rivalmance so far so that might be an interesting option too.
I probably would try the rogue but i really want to have Carver in my party this time. Tough choice... happy_daiz, where there more than a few dialogue options concerning the whole "mage against mages"-thing, or did Meredith just refer to you as to any other class most of the time?

I'm not quite sure what you mean with sarcastic Hawke, macrocarl? Do you mean the purple answers or just the aggressive way?

Personally I find Carver a much more interesting character than Bethany, even though I dislike him more. I have never sided with the templars as a mage, but I could see reasons why you would - what happened to your mother, what Anders just did (so even apparently 'good' mages shouldn't be left free of the Circle), what Fenris says about the magisters in the Imperium.Orsino reveals something very interesting if you side with the Templars.

The mage recognition does seem a little more prevalent than I was first thinking. I remember Aveline actually makes a comment if you tell Samson that mages should be stopped (Best Served Cold). It can come in handy when dealing with Feynriel's father, as I recall...really they're just points of interest; nothing story-changing.

The fact that you're a mage doesn't change too much with Meredith, it just adds a few lines more dialogue. She makes mention of it on more than one occasion, but it doesn't actually change anything for you. I was relieved by that in my last playthrough, actually. I wasn't sure if it would have any impact on the Viscount achievement or not, since you have to support the Templars.

On a sidenote, I was really pleasantly surprised when I did side with the Templars, what Meredith told me about her sister. It was a soft and fuzzy moment (well, for Meredith). She actually seemed to have a heart somewhere in there.

I like Meredith a lot more than I do Orsino, especially after her telling about her sister. Because what she says is true. I think she probably was 'OK' before the idol (of course first year of Kirkwall there are still comments about the circle tower so she wasn't as nice as Greagoir but then neither is Orsino as wise as Irving. I

I don't feel that being pro-Circle is really being anti-mage. For example, in the quest where Thrask asks you to take the apostates from the cave - Thrask asks you to save them, the first thing Grace asks is for you to kill Thrask. Handing her over to the Circle seems sensible after that. I don't think sending Feynriel to the Circle instead of the Dalish means you're anti mage, just that you do'nt think sending someone who could become a dangerous abomination to the Dalish is a great idea. Then by the end, perhaps you really liked Elthina (I mean, I would imagine most in the chantry would side with the Templars yet she didn't get involved in the debate) so have the Sebastian gut reaction to what Anders did, or maybe you just think mages shouldn't be free and although you don't want them to all be made tranquil you also don't want them to escape - the lesser of two evils is siding with the templars.

Okay, i started one as a mage now :). I'm also playing on hard now and wow, it really is a lot harder right from the beginning. I guess i'm spoiled by my last game on normal, where only some bosses have been a problem, now even the redshirt-Hurlocks survive quite some blows, wow... Kudos to all you guys that started the game on hard, i guess i need some more RPG-experience before i can be as good.

And wow, default-FemHawke looks bad-ass ;)...

I must admit that I have NO idea how anyone can make it through a second time! I tried to start playthrough number 2... and couldn't make past Aveline's husband confronting my maginess.

I hate Carver.

I hate him. Really truly hate him.

But he's better written and more interesting than his easily to love sister who generally has no opinion on anything and is as bland as white bread.
