Having read quite a few Mass Effect and Dragon Age posts concerning male vs. female leads and posts concerning gay love interests, I've developed a sneaking suspicion that there are great number of male game players who prefer to play as a female (and lesbian) character. Still I think a lot of those same players only play the male Shepard because he is the only one who can get into Miranda, Jack, and/or Ashley's uniform. I have no scientific information to back my suspicion, only forum comments, conversations with friends, and discussing the subject at the three local Game Stops.

If, and I mean IF, the rumors are true and most or all ME3 characters are now romantic options for both Shepards, will that cause a lot of players to ditch male Shepard and create their dream female Shepard now that it's open season on Miranda? I am curious how the rest of the community feels since I know at least six players personally who have admited as much.

Please, no trolling, though I don't mind joking around; it's hard to not make a flaming Wrex joke. And feel free to comment on what I see is blatant hypocricy in the Bioware fan community about their treatment of lesbian vs. gay male romances. I find it laughable how many male DA players complain bitterly that Anders hit on male Hawke and they lost 5 whole friendship points turning him down (would Morrigan had received the same outrage, recon or no?). I'm not gay myself, but I've always thought it suspicious that Bioware was always had the lesbian option for Shepard, Liara or Kelly, while gay male Shepard always had to remain celibate.

I can only speak for myself in that i play vanilla male shep because im a hetero male who plays as himself, and is not good at the face editor. That will not change in ME3. This thread is hilariously close to suggesting that men are pigs who just care about sex.

James2912 -- I honestly don't mind if you play as a straight Shepard, religious Shepard, mean Shepard, or nice Shepard. I'm just happy that Bioware continues to expand the choices in the ME series.

And as a male myself, I admit that while I may not BE a pig who just cares about sex, it wouldn't be far to travel. And I know that I'm much better at reigning in my urges that many of our fellow males, not just my friends but on the popularity of raging male hormone media and entertainment.

To clarify I was amused not offended by your post. I honestly thought you were a girl. lol. I'm for same sex LI's too by the way. BTW not sure what age you are but you seem to be describing teenage boys not men.

As an atheist, I'm disappointed that Bioware hasn't done more work to incorporate actual religious beliefs into their characters. Not just "I do/do not believe in God," but "I'm an atheist/Catholic/Muslim/pagan" etc.

But back on topic, many players say that Hale's VA is the reason they prefer female Shepard. Do you long to hear Hale talking romantically to Tali? Or do you want to hear Meer, who tends to do his best work when Shepard is all business, whispering sweet nothings to Thane?

Thank you, I think. Actually, I do have a girlfriend who refuses to make her own Bioware persona and will occassionally use mine. She tends to get really confrontational to people she regards as racist or sexist, and she HATES Miranda and has started way too many fights with her fans in MY name. *sigh*

I identify with male shep and can therefore be immersed in the gameplay. With fem shep I just can't identify with her, I can't picture myself as her. And honestly the LI parts in the game are not really that important to me in the first place although I do appreciate it from a immersion perspective. If I wanted to watch two girls do it the dirty I'd watch lesbian porn. Sex is really not the reason I play Mass Effect.

I have two primary Shepards, one male and one female. The male is a horndog who flirted with all the women but finally went with Liara. But then did his secretary 'cause his fish kept dying and promised Liara he was still into her.

My female Shepard, an incredibly hot, barbie-esque, renegon infiltrator, loves only one person: me.

Unlikely. Porn is more efficient. Though whiny insecure people who hate the thought of being near bisexual men may ditch male Shepard...

I have always preferred the female editor to the male editor since it seems to do a better job getting the look I want. My favorite female Warden and Hawke are based on my girlfriend, so she's meaningful to me too. My favorite female Shepard I based on a favorite aunt who served in the US Navy and Hale's VA is just a LITTLE too deep to be a perfect match.

YES! I can't believe the WHINING about the possibilty that Shepard may be complimented by Wrex or that an emotionally distraught Anderson may actually try to get some snuggle-bunny consolation time.

Nah...Mark Vanderloo's look fits my canon Shep perfectly. And so does Mark Meer's voice

I think not, but some people might switch to FemShep if their previous fave female LI is now open to f/f nookie.

Hell no. Male Shep is by far the more popular of the two genders (overall, not on this board).

I hope this thread is just a weak attempt at satire and the OP is not being serious.

I would still play a male Shepard. I always play male characters in RPGs. It's easier for me to role play a male since, you know, I am one.

Well I certainly don't want all the male members of my squad to start hitting on me. I think the gay romances should be initiated by shepard through a clear dialogue option. in fact, I want ALL the romance options to be clearly demarcated I'm tired of squaddies getting pissed at me because I'm not interested ala Jack. That being said I'm glad that people that are gay get to have a more immersive roleplaying experience.

@ James2912 -- Since I usually base my female characters on females I actually know, it makes it easier to get into the character because I can almost imagine them being a hell of a lot braver than I in these fantasy and sci/fi situations. My male characters are base on an idealized version of myself, so I rarely do an evil play through. I also don't romance characters I find reprehensible, no matter how good looking they are.

Very intersting way to play. When I play as myself I usually play as a paragade. I actually might just try playing femshep the way you suggested!

Up until now, the only way for players to get some action from VERY popular crewmates like Tali or Miranda was to play as a male. While I don't think the lesbian option will TRULY kill off male Shepard, I do wonder how it will affect his popularity. Plus, it is possible that 100 percent of that 80 percent that played as a male also played as a female.

CoD is popular, that does not mean it's good or better.

Also there is hardly any context with those stats so they are worthless until BW gives proper context.

I'm not just SERIOUS, I'm INDOCTRINATING!

Just joking. Really.

As for the forum itself, I do admit to using hyperbole in the title.

And that's a good thing. Everyone should have the option to play the way they want.
