@ Ymladdych -- I've talked to (in person and in these forums) males who play as female Shepard, and I'd say slightly less than half have had incredibly superficial reasons for doing so (Liara being the favorite LI for some reason). Quite a few also said they prefer Hale's VA.

EDIT: If I read "if I'm gonna be looking at my character's butt, it better be a female butt" excuse one more time, I'll lose it.

I am curious what more women think of playing as male Shepard. I know my girlfriend likes to play Bioware games, usually as a female, but she does have a male Shepard, a male Warden, and a male Hawke, and whenever she gets the chance she ALWAYS chooses a male LI. So far her male Shepard has been really lonely.

I'm not sure if that means she likes to see two guys get it on (she's evasive when asked), but she said that even while a male, HER preferences haven't changed.

Certainly not. If I play female characters, they always date a man.

And Vanderloo Shep is too awesome anyway.

You'd be surprised at just how much of a minority actually cares about the romances.

It can't be too much, of course; otherwise they wouldn't be a minority anymore. ;)

@ mrsph -- That may be true, but this is pretty much a forum for the people who DO care about such things. I guess I could have been more specific in my opening. I do find some, but not all, of the romances fun, but I think the last time I completely ignored them was Baldur's Gate 2 since I just found the whole cat-fight scene annoying. I eventually made a dwarf.

As a woman gamer, I much prefer playing manShep and tend to play only males in other games also....You have me thinking about the why now, I hadn't really thought about it. To be honest, I do have preference for watching a handsome man running around on my screen (love my custom Shep), so yes it's partly for eye candy, always want my PC's handsome. Also I like the idea of a strong competent man facing challenges head on...yes, there are men like that in life too, but *thank god* we don't have the extreme situations such as found in games...Come to think of it, I guess my reasons are very base, gaming is pure escapism from the mundaneness of reality for me and so partly use it to feed my turn ons.

My Shep remains firmly in the hetro camp....once again for the fact, that, that is what personally appeals to me.

While most of my Sheps (and Wardens) are female, I do have a few manSheps that pretty much only came around so I could see what the guyside romances were like for myself rather than risk a neck sprain watching my fiance's screen when he's playing.  What additional story to my Sheps isn't particularly detailed beyond what idle thoughts pop in the head while at a loading screen or the reboot if my game locked up, but each one even if they share the same background/service is different.

I do have an 'asexual' manShep who's really more along the lines of 'No time for love, gotta save the galaxy', and a gay Shep who's so far just not into the guys on the crew.  If whoever ends up in ME3's not his Mr. Right, I figure he'll find him once all the galaxy saving's done.

As far as the girlfriend liking to watch two guys get it on, that's actually a fairly normal interest.  I don't quite understand it since it's not my particular cuppa, and I'm not going to knock what gets another woman to schlick away on.  To me it's more of a 'Okay...it's two guys getting frisky..big whoo' kinda thing.  But I can see where she might be uncomfortable expressing her like to look since it can be easily misinterpreted.

My ex does the same thing and with the same rationale. I think there are plenty of women that do, but on the internet it's sometimes tough enough going just being accepted as female that people rarely talk about it.

Yeah, it CAN be pretty ridculous, but I'm happy a lot of people have posted some pretty interesting views. You're welcome to post, too, if you ARE capable of making posts longer than than four words. I am impressed you guys have mastered the "quote" feature of the forums. Was there a tutorial video on YouTube?

I think that you are going to see a large influx of male players wanting to play femshep now because they can romance more females. However, I don't think it will be enough to make femshep more-played than manshep, and certainly not enough to "kill off" manshep. When it comes down to it, I think more casual male players want their character to be "manly and bada*s" than have an opportunity for a few extra moments living out their preferred lesbian fantasy.

I also think most people who just "casually" play ME are going to pick default Shep 'cause it's easier and allows them to beat the game faster, but the dedicated players will make multiple Sheps to try out all the dialogue options. I personally have six Shepards: three for each gender, "alignment," and romance.

Also, a poll of mine I'm sure is a repeat, but is relevant http://social.biowar...0&poll_id=20248

@ 1490 -- That's probably going to be the case, but I assumed that most "dedicated" ME gamers would be the ones who would actually see the Bioware forums. I'm sure most of the casual ME fans are never going to join the EA/Bioware community or read this forum, but will continue to happily blow up evil aliens.

I've more or less come to see Shepard not as myself, getting put into the action, but as Shepard the character: every choice there is to make is something that, given the situation, Shepard would have to be capable of coming to. As much choice as there can be, there's only so much room for somebody with Shepard's range of backgrounds/skills/preferences to react to something, and there's not always going to be an option for what me/myself/I would want to be able to do. That is, I'm being told the story, not being the one to tell it, and therefore what I "choose" to happen in the story is not my responsibility, it's just what I'm choosing to be told.

Therefore, whatever "my" Shepard does is part of a story being told by Bioware, I'm just pawing at them to tell me what happens when Aph Shep starts to fall for a dying drell philosopher-assasin. As opposed to me wishing I were a woman and that I could **** an iguana, that is. So I'll thank you kindly, stranger, to please try not to psychoanalyze me based on what I "have" "my" Shepard do, if that's what you meant by saying that most male gamers have their Shepard do ___ and therefore are ____.

I'm just trying to start a conversation and stear it in a certain direction with the title and introduction. I am interested, but I don't psychoanalyze. However, I do make judgments on whether people are nice or rude, or whether or not they have a sense of humor.

Male gamer here and I have 6 Shepards (3 male, 3 female) one for each class (yes I finally gave in and created a soldier Shepard, wow is AR overpowered). Anyway, some of my Sheps are in a romance, some are not, even got ninjamanced in one of my playthroughs, but I will not be creating a new shepard to create a gay romance in ME 3. Overall in the story I'm not too worried about the romances. It's a nice option to have, but it's kind of like a fun side mission, doesn't need to be done and it doesn't have any effect on the story (at least it hasn't so far). I'll still be playing ME 3 through with all my sheps, male included. So for me this has no effect at all.

There may be a few more femsheps out there now, but I honestly don't think this is going to make a huge difference.

;)

Seriously, though, the camera angle in ME makes the 'butt issue' pretty non-existant.
