I think a batarian squadmate would be awesome. Think about the tension it would ne between Shepard. Especially if he/she's a colonist. There you would have the unique dialog for them.
And then later on in the game, you would get his loyalty and then ding dong you're best friends

and some find it hard to like a race that has been written to conflict w/ ours just like the geth/quarians and salarians/krogans. I think not one batarian is going to fight for shepard and will side w/ reapers just to get back at shepard/ humans.
I think that's fair, obviously most of the notable Batarians ARE jerks if not outright villains, but given their oppressive gov, criminals are likely the only ones Shep is going to encounter.
It depends on if in this last chapter, Bioware is willing and or desires to cheese off a segment of their fans purposely to add a Batarian. Presumably to reveal that they aren't all bad, or potentially even mostly. They just are under an oppressive government, otherwise it would be to grief them. Could go either way, but the name of the game seems to be other than the Reapers monolithic cartoonish evil doesn't exist in Mass Effect. Rachni and Geth purposely designed not to be identifiable with their audience were more...nuanced. The actions of the Salarians have been explained, people feeling sorry for the Krogan have been shown a small window to what they would likely have done to the galaxy, the Quarians might not be victims, even the Vorcha you meet are considered vermin and literally kidnapped to serve in mercenary bands. So the idea that the limit of Batarians is they may NOT shoot you in the face but will still spit on you seems a bit much, but we'll see. Bioware's obviously got big fish to fry.

edit: Or one of those bird things that was announced on the Cerberus Network. I can't think of the name atm but for some reason I keep thinking about the arrakoa from Warcraft.
Arrakoa?
Bird guys right?
I seem to remember the Aarakocra of D&D way back when it WAS D&D. That was in 1981 or 82 as I recall. WoW's taken that too huh?
Well for those of us that were unfortunate enough to be born at the end of the 80s, it was something relatively fresh. And that's kind of where Warcraft gets its charm anyways isn't it, stealing from other sources and making it their own lore?
I cannot remember the name of the bird race that was announced and its driving me crazy, I know it began with an "R".

And then come back later for I-told-you-sos.
I think we're probably going to get a total of four new guys. This way, even the folks that killed everyone will have a squad of six. Here's what I'd like to see:
1. We've already confirmed James Vega, who will apparently fill the "tank" role. Now, since both soldiers and sentinels are very good at taking lots of hits, I don't think it's too far-fetched for him to switch powers depending on which VS survives. If he's not our token redshirt, here's hoping he's bi.
2. I predict a new human female. Gonna guess... bisexual infiltrator? Pretty please?
3. Manly batarian engineer. Not an LI.
4. Female turian vanguard. Not an LI.
I'm just shootin' in the dark, here, but it's what I'm hoping for.
So, what do y'all think we're gettin'?
Let me draw up a concept for that.

Also a young badass kind of blonde soldier would be cool too. Young, petite, with an Austrailian accent, who wouldn't really get along with any of the other women (aside from Jack), in Shep's squad but would definately fit in with Garrus and Zaeed; and Joker would have a huge crush on her.

If Mordin isn't on-board... the normandy needs a Scientist... though Liara was an Asari Scientist
1 male s/s squadmate.perhaps Vega?
1 female s/s squadmate
that makes 4

-If Garrus is Dead/Unloyal: New Female Turian Inflitrator* (same skills as Garrus)
-If Tali is Dead/Unloyal: New Male Quarian Engineer** (same skills as Tali )
-Female Human Vanguard (Blond?) Romance Option
*Could be Garrus' sister.
**Will not be Kal'Reegar, but probably Lemm'Shal vas Idenna.
or with squad of 8
(no Garrus/Tali replacement)
-Male Salarian Inflitrator
-Male Batarian* Engineer
-Female Human Vanguard (Blond?) Romance Option
*Only issue here is Humans and Batarians don't ever seem to get along. Could make the squad a bit more fun to have a cranky Batarian with you. Also Shepard's possible background and recent actions make such a pairing even less likely. More likely some other species. Probably Drell if anything.
Other less likely/silly additions:
-Female Krogan Vanguard (Wrex's little sister!)
-Prothean Scientist Survivor (Tech)
So...
-Ashley/Kaidan (Soldier/Sentinel) Cont. Romance Option
-James Vega (Sentinel/Soldier) Romance Option
-Liara (Adept) Cont. Romance Option
-Garrus/Alt. (Inflitrator) Cont. Romance Option
-Tali/Alt. (Engineer) Cont. Romance Option
-New Female Human (Vanguard) Romance Option
In total 9 squadmates. Maximum of 6. Most likely squad build IMO.
or
-Ashley/Kaidan (Soldier/Sentinel) Cont. Romance Option
-James Vega (Sentinel/Soldier) Romance Option
-Liara (Adept) Cont. Romance Option
-Garrus (Inflitrator) Cont. Romance Option
-Tali (Engineer) Cont. Romance Option
-New Female Human (Vanguard) Romance Option
-New Male Salarian Inflitrator
-New Male Batarian* Engineer
In total 9 squadmates. Maximum of 8.
*More likely Drell or new species.
I can also almost assure you there will not be more then 8 characters on the squad. 6-8 squadmates is more then reasonable, and with alternates roles can actually equate to 9-10 squadmates possibly.
I dunno if James Vega is going to be Sentinel/Soldier depending on Virmire Survivor. They may simply add another character and simply make James Vega a soldier. In that case we can expect another Sentinel type person the team. Although this would change squad size to either 7 or 9 in total. 7 squadmates is possible, but 9 squadmates is too many. No clue on who or what other Sentinel could be.

I predict Thane will die of Kepral's syndrome and his son Kolyat will replace him on your team with similar skills (or maybe Kolyat will at least show up if Thane died in the suicide mission). Not that I want Thane to die, because he's awesome, but it just seems like a poor story decision to give a character a terminal illness if that won't have any consequences down the road.
Kolyat sucks.

Except the entire point of Thane's loyalty mission, under the name Sins of the Father, was to ensure Kolyat does not follow his father's footsteps. That, and Kolyat has zero combat skills; just because you can fire a gun doesn't automatically make you qualified to stand on your feet on the battlefield.DarthSlim108 wrote...

It's called increasing drama for the sake of drama and depth. Writers do this all the time in their stories. Not that I want Thane to die, because he's awesome, but it just seems like a poor story decision to give a character a terminal illness if that won't have any consequences down the road.

However, Bioware seem to have a 'one squaddie per race' principle, so I can hardly imagine Garrus & new turian character being together in the squad. Maybe we get another turian if Garrus died in SM? But, well, maybe ME3 would allow you to have two squaddies of the same race at the same time? I doubt the latter, though, but you never know.

Good... good... let the hate flow through you...
Now that I think about it a quiet, intelligent and well spoken batarian that's an ex- special intervention unit, (whom I shall call Bob), member would be an interesting addition to the squad. I can see a few rather interesting conversations between Bob and Mordin about the genophage, STG & SIU, the reapers, geth and AI in general etc...
However, I will not give up on a young blonde austrailian vanguard for my manly man of a Shepard to fall for should things with Ash go sideways.
