I don't think they need to make any changes at all.

Seriously, if someone hates RPGs so much that reading a 5 word sentence is intolerable for them, then perhaps they shouldn't be playing RPGs.

Absolutely no need to make an RPG more simple than your average Point & Click Adventure Game in order to cater to people who hate RPGs.

I don’t get why people think the icons dumb things down. Meaningful complexity from deep mechanics is good. Complexity from not having enough information about what things actually do or how things work or just not being user friendly is not.

It’s not like the icons would tell you how whatever NPC your talking to is going react. All it would do is make it a bit clearer what tone your character is going to use before you pick an option. Tone doesn’t always carry across in text as anyone who talks to other people on the internet should know, especially when things are being paraphrased like they are in Mass Effect (tho bioware has done a pretty good job with the paraphrasing for the most part). It’s not an excuse to not read the line at all or for bioware to not paraphrase properly, you still should want to know what you character is going to say not just the tone.

I think what they currently have with the paragon option at the top and the renegade option at the bottom is worse. You don’t have to think of what paragon or renegade actually means, all you do is pick top or bottom. Although I personally don’t like the whole paragon and renegade system in the first place.

I haven’t played DA2 so I can’t comment on how it was done in that game but even if it was done badly in DA2 it does not mean that the idea of icons is inherently bad just that DA2 didn’t do it particularly well.

Alternatively they could just let you expand on the paraphrasing and read the whole or more of line and that would probably work better.

The only reason I'd want the icons not to be there is for consistency with the previous two games. But I love the icons, so I still want them in the game! ^^

The one problem with paraphrasing is that sometimes you can't tell the tone of a reply before you pick it. Icons help out with that. If you always pick your replies based on icon instead of text, well... then we're quite different, I guess is all I can say.

The icons were a horrible idea. Well-done paraphrases do the job a lot better.
