Did I mention EA's plan to exploit BioWare franchises yearly?

If EA actually does end up doing this I'm organizing a hostile takeover of EA.

Nah, you'll know we've given up when we pull the plug. We do have the plug, after all. It's right here. And yellow. ;)

But yes, we have been listening, and will continue to do so, especially now that the signal is outweighing the noise. I'll try and post something a little meatier in the next little while, but I want to slowly open up the dialog and talk about specifics; it does a disservice to us all if I can only speak in vaguaries.

I thought it was a very nice gesture, and moreso, great that your response defines the ear Bioware is giving the community (this is for all of the Bioware team). I may not have agreed with the changes in the direction that DA2 took from its predecessor, but I am only one type of gamer. It is a business afterall and the success of a franchise is determined by the popularity of the game and its sequels (if applicable), and sometimes changes are made to reach that effect; the risk of making the change reflects over time whether it's good or not so good. I am hoping that constructive feedback DA2 brought out from the forumites here in the various threads, are enough to form a merging of well thought out criticisms, and the good points of DA2, and that it somehow will reflect in the franchise's future.

Your previous response in tis thread was good to read, so thanks from a long-time Bioware devotee.

Because the only reason everybody doesn't agree with me is that there are huge, souless corporations whose only goal is to brainwash everyone else for the sole purpose of making me unhappy.

I still can't believe how one sided people are about RPGs. It's like some people cannot touch anything beyond a Bioware game because the others are nothing like Bioware.

I can still enjoy The Witcher 2 immensely and still favour Baldur's gate II as one of my all time favourites. It seems that others cannot even go into another game without trying to compare.

well, I'm not saying that it's everywhere where someone calls console players an idiot. It's rare to find, but I saw it somewhere. For now though, it's nothing to fret about too seriously

Anyway ignoring the idiot part and focusing on the console bashing, over on the constructive criticism thread, someone called Kissing the Pink (I think) was bashing consoles and saying that PC games have been ruined. Page 90 or 91

And I have seen us PC people being called PC elitetist whiners who fear change, only want an epic baddy to kill, and just don't understand evolution of RPGs.  I hate any of those generalizations when I see them.

Personally, "fanbois" is my fav to love to hate. *grumbles and kicks the  cat*

People will not buy 'quality RPG's' from a company that decides to focus on a drastically different direction than they would normally expect from such a genre, at least not the same audience. In short, people will not buy a game if they think it's bad when there are better alternatives.

I don't think BioWare will be making terrible games only from now on. It's just that some people remain skeptical after DA 2 about future titles, or after the streamlining of Mass Effect. And the marketing. Or the developer responses to issues with their games.

Did I mention EA's plan to exploit BioWare franchises yearly?

Well that depends on what that "drastically different direction" is, doesn't it? I would absolutely buy something drastically different if I liked the sound of the changes. People won't buy something they think will be bad, true, but mixing things up does not = bad. And I thought the combat and inventory changes in ME2 were an improvement, which is also generally what I think of DA2's combat.

Also I didn't know you had a seat on EA's board of directors.

I don't like the generalizations either. I only call people PC elitists when they start insulting consoles and maybe even console players, and even then it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. And not the good kind of sour taste.

I honestly believe that PC players do want change, but they're just wary of what that change is. Doesn't mean they don't want it. They just want it to be good change. To say that they don't want change is foolish, unless they outright stated they don't want change.

RPGs should end up changing, but I believe it should be slowly and gradually.

How many times did I use the word change? Maybe I should start changing the word change into something else that isn't, well, change.

Frankly some games are better on console, others on PC.

IMO the only improvement the consoles need is the ability to use mods for games like the PCs can.

You're a kitty kicker?  For shame... next thing you'll tell us is that you're a puppy punter too!  Posted Image

I think it's cool that the OP got a personalized letter... doesn't happen that often, 95% of companies usually send off some form letter that some desk lackey pens once and edits slightly a million times.  I know, I used to pen and edit those letters (for a video game company, no less) a long time ago in a galaxy far far... well, ok this galaxy.

The Grey Nayr, how can you say some games are better on console when PCs can literally do everything consoles can and more? I don't want to start an argument, just stating the facts.

I can't believe you changed the plug to yellow! Its like you no longer care about the fans who long prefered the red plugs since the days of Baldur's Gate 2. Of course, I blame EA for pressuring you into the plug changing decison.

Also, I hear the Witcher 2 has Naked plugs. And they don't fade to black when they pull them.

I hope you guys (DA team) will have more back-up from your editor when you will need some polish to make sure all the flaws you want to fix will be fixed instead of "lets cut corner".
Hard job.

Good luck.

SDT, thanks for taking the time to write an actual letter. And Mike Laidlaw, thanks for taking the time to answer it. Two-way dialogue between BioWare and fans will have nothing but a positive effect on BioWare's future and our continuing pleasure at playing games we love.

No offense, but when I think of someone actually writing a physical letter or email to someone to complain about something, I think of Grandpa Simpson.

Anyway, that was just an aside. It's cool that you got a response. I was never worried about whether they cared about the franchise, but if you were I hope this alleviates some of that anxiety.

I write hand written letters once in a while (although I generally reserve them for far off close friends and people I love.)  I even own a fountain pen (and no... I am not THAT old.)

There is something uniquely personal about a hand written letter in an age where most mail is addressed "Dear Occupant" or is reduced to a digital sound bite.

In a world ruled by Twitter, nothing says you care like a hand written letter.  In this case, it seems that it was also effective.

one problem though is that some people are, and I loathe using this, PC elitists where their comments have been nothing but "Consoles have ruined great gaming!! Do you see what you have done to our world with those stupid things?!?!" and other such comments.

I've even seen a few comments where people blatantly called console players idiots. That pisses me off to no end, because I'm primarily a console player and I'm far from being in the realm of idiocy.

I don't think i've ever encountered that argument for people disliing DA2. That makes absolutely no sense to me.

(husband)

I think that relates to how the game is simplified for the sake of consoles.    They are basically saying because it is that is because console players are stupid and not because of the specific mechanics of using game controllers etc.  Essentially a hasty generalization or attack based on association.

And an example of simplification/ dumbed down to clarify...    "The Ghost Bridge" in the Urn of Saced Ashes quest in Origons, the sections stayed solid after you solved each of  them.   While on the PC all the sections disappeared and you had to restart again or reload the save if you got the wrong answer on a section.
