Isabella taking steady unexplainable damage?

Can someone help me with game mechanics here?

So my party is suboptimal but I chose it for role playing.  I'm playing on Nightmare and it seems like at random points during battle but more often than not when Isabella is engaged in melee combat she will take damage steadily from no apparent source.  It is almost as if while she is doing damage she is taking damage herself?

Is there an enemy buff that causes damange to be reciprocated?  And, if so, why would only apply to Isabella?  I can watch Hawke and the Guard Captain beat on this mob at the same time Isabella is and Isabella's health steadily drops while Hawke and GC are solid... I guess this could be regular damage but Hawke and GC have such high DR, armor, and health that I don't even notice?

I swear to god even with high DR and armor, I should see some red numbers over Hawke and GC's heads, especially if they have aggro.

This is really frustrating me, so hopefully there is just something obvious I'm missing.  Micromanaging Isabella is not fun, this makes it almost negative fun to play her.

Isabela is both lightly armored and a melee fighter. This sort of thing is, as far as I can tell, very common. It might help if you bolster her constitution.

On Nightmare, you have to micro Isabela. Nightmare is not Izzy friendly. As mentioned earlier, it sounds like your Isabela is getting hit by warriors auto attacks. Later in the game, i.e. like act 2, these auto attacks may outright kill her quickly.

If you are on PC, there is a reduced FF damage mod that lowers FF damage which will help reduce the micro necessary.

I have played with Izzy on NM without the above mod as it was not available at the time and it is certainly doable. She is, IMO, best paired with a SnS Warrior or Archer Rogue Hawke (Mage is okay and obviously 2H is not). The SnS auto attack arc is smaller than 2H so Izzy has more space to attack without getting hit by the warrior. Playing a SnS Hawke allows you to see Izzy coming into range and micro positioning as needed so she is not killed by the warrior.

When I played on NM with Izzy, I prioritized her threat reduction abilities over offensive. This keeps her in the fight a bit longer. Rush, evade, stealth, the ablity (I forget the name) that teleports her right next to another party memeber (should be the SnS warrior) are all good. Later on in the game, you can add abilities to the SnS that transfer threat from nearby party members to the SnS.

Basically, my take away from playing Izzy on NM was that I had to optimize my party around her survival which lead to a sub optimal party but it is doable. Also, since I plugged cunning on her to open chests and dectect all traps, she was never able to use the best leveled daggers until late game since her dex lagged. Not much fun IMO.

Random points? Either two handed talents or she bleed out.On nightmare, when on 10 percent health,
without healing hawke and other party members bleed out to death.

waitwaitwait. Okay, I knew there was FF from spells in NM, but also from MELEE attacks!?
And here I was thinking SuicidalBaby was being sarcastic...

Two handers with giant reach damage nearby allies even with basic attacks. Its true. And even i killed fenris more then one time with scatter( a shield and sword attack)
The only way to prevent this(other then annoying micromanaging) is using an elemental weapon and give other warriors/melee rogues elemental runes.

Its true. Anything that does area damage is subject to FF on nightmare. And 2 Handers definately do Area, even on basic swings.

1h weapons do as well, smaller arc.

Isabela on nightmare requires smart tactics, additional healing, and occasional micro for certain encounters. Trade off is the highest dps companion in the game.

Okay, so the goofy thing is that the red I'm seeing on Isabella is usually 12, 16, 18, 13, etc. Really small numbers compared to the 100-200 per swing that I'm swatting enemies for with Hawke. Presumably the smaller numbers are because they are glancing blows... At the same time, I'm not seeing Guard Captain take similar damage. I'm going to watch closely tonight, but even if Isabella is taking 10's and GC has 90% DR, I should see 1's and 2's and GC and I don't think I'm seeing them but I could be wrong.

I guess this is only really an issue when I have that last lieutenant or boss left and after cleaning up the cronies and I just want to beat him down with everybody. Had I known this would be so painful when I started I would have chosen a very different party, but I want to see it through with 2H Hawke, Isabella, GC, and Anders.

I can't wait to play again as evil Hawke with a pimped out party on Normal. Gonna be like a knife through butter...

Rrend -- If you want to keep your party config, I highly recommend you respec your Hawke to SnS. This will be more combat effective and less tedious. SnS can do more single target damage and this game is all about burst damage.

Nightmare mode = ranged mode, dont even bother with melee except for a tank, they are pointless and will deal far more damage to eachother than what the enemies do.

Totally agree with last two comments. I think I've sunk more than 200 hours into this nightmare first playthrough. All good fun, but tons of micromanagement... I love it though so no complaints. I prefer to make my party selections based on role playing so I'm living with what I've got. I'm fighting my way out of the gallows right now so not much further to go I suspect... kind of annoying though that the champion armor set is complete so late in the game... in addition access to componenets for fell poison and the grenade are basically just prior to the end sequence of game.

Here's hoping that an expansion continues from where this one leaves off like Awakenings.

Last battle was really fun... rewarding to have pimped my gimped party so well that I was never close to failing on the final battle nightmare. I don't know how it turns out if you side with the Templars but punishing Meredith felt good...
