I know it depends on your play style but I'm looking ahead of time on my Shepard should use.

Short version:
Shotguns- only effective at close range, and unlike other classes Adepts lack the powers to get them close with enemies without being shot on the way. Could be difficult to handle and not ideal for most situations.
The Geth Plasma Shotgun however is effective at medium range and could be a good weapon choice for an Adept.
Sniper Rifles- meh, get that damn scope out of my eye!
Assault Rifles- effective at any range. More ammo and a more powerful tool to complement what you do already, why not?

Assault Rifles work, but I honestly think the Geth Plasma Shotgun is the best choice for an Adept. With the ammo upgrade, it has absolutely loads of ammo, and it's great at dealing with those pesky shields you don't have a power against.
Basically it's the perfect weapon for quickly removing defenses so you can use biotics. Oh and not only does it work at range, the projectiles actually seek the target a bit when you aim before shooting. I've seen them turn to catch a moving rocket drone, for example.

Yeah, it's like Waltz said: Shotguns if you like CQC, most fun I had with Adept - risky though. Sniper rifles are nor very good, the scope can be annoying, and Adepts are not the best long-range combatant. Assault rifles are the most versatile weapons; they will be good at any range. If you're not sure which one to take, pick ARs, can't go wrong with those.
It's best to save before selecting bonus weapon so you can always reload and try something new.

I still want to argue that the GPS is the best bet.
The problem I have with ARs is that the normal ones can be replaced with the Locust with no problem, and the Mattock is a bit low on ammo compared to the GPS.
However, if you do not have the Firepower Pack and therefore no GPS, I would say shotguns are more of a fun choice for the experts. Maybe then the Vindicator would be a good AR to carry around.

Assault Rifles or Shotguns.
For the most part, the Adept needs only pistols and SMGs. I find that the bonuses they gain to armor (pistols) and shields/barriers (SMGs) are great and they will outperform Assault Rifles in most situations.
Basically, I would choose my weapons training based on the SMG you use the most. If you use the Locust--a good long-range SMG--take shotgun training. If you use the Shiruken or Tempest--good for short-to-medium range--take the Assault Rifle training and use the Vindicator, Geth Pulse Rifle, or Mattock for longer-range attacks.
If you do not mind the sniper-zoom when casting powers when aiming or docked in cover (most hate it) then Sniper Rifles (read: Viper) is a viable choice, but I do not think it meshes well with the Adept.

Shot guns can work well for bastion or with a really agresive Nemisis with warp ammo.
Assult rifles is the average choice, but smg do was AF do any way.
Sniper rifle are fantastic if you us it right. You can lock on to enemies at a far distace with, meaning if you see them, you can singularity them.(It curve to them even without the curser highliter.) And it great for Ymir mechs, especially with stasis.

Basically just choose whatever weapon you like the most. Any of them will work but will require different tactics.
Shotgun is probably hardest as Adepts are squishy. This in contrast to a shotgun engineer. Shotgun engineers work reasonably well because they have the drone to distract while they close to shotgun range. However, Geth Plasma Shotgun has better range than other shotguns and strips away barriers and shields very quickly....an important thing to do as an Adept.
Sniper rifle training can be great with the Viper. The Viper can function as both a battle rifle and a sniper rifle. You can also use the scope to target enemies with biotic powers at ranges you normally couldn't.
With assault rifles, it's hard to go wrong. The Vindicator and Mattock are always good choices. However, for an Adept, you might consider using the Geth Pulse Rifle. Like the geth shotgun, it strips away barriers and shields pretty quickly. GPR with Zaeed's squad disruptor ammo will rip through shields like they aren't there.

The straightforward answer is to simply take the Mattock via AR training. It basically outperforms heavy pistols, other assault rifles, most shotguns and most sniper rifles barring the widow in every situation where you'd use them. Yeah, it's overpowered, but hey, it's effective.
Shotgun wise, unless you're playing hyper-agressive (see my sig), the Geth Plasma Shotty should be your choice. It packs a heavy punch and essentially has the same range as an assault rifle. If you're going agressive, either the Scimitar or the Eviscerator are good choices - depending on whether you like to keep the pressure up on enemies or do quick pop-up attacks with one powerful shot respectively.
Sniper Rifles.... Viper. I personally choose this all the time, as it's basically a hybrid between a battle rifle and a sniper rifle. It's probably not a true traditional sniper weapon with one-shot kills, but it's a lot more practical. The only other Sniper rifle in the game that's worthwhile on Shepard is the Widow, and you can only get that via modding.

I chose the sniper. It took a few missions to get used to, because you still have to use it in conjunction with your other weapons, and the sniper zoom is a pain. But if you use the sniper zoom as an asset instead of a distraction, it can be really useful.
I skipped over assault rifles because I have the locust, but I saved so I could go back. I'm thinking of trying the shotgun next, but I'm thinking I'll need more practice, as I've never used it...

When I played as an adept, I noticed that I naturally kept my distance because of low heath/barrier and because my powers suited that style. With that, I went sniper-rifle and I think it was a good choice.
I was covered at mid-range with the Locust SMG so AR didn't make sense, and I didn't find my adept suitable to go shotgun either (Geth Plasma Shotgun may not be a bad option, I just don't like to use it because it doesn't feel "real" to me)
So yeah, Incisor (good against shields) was what I used for my adept.

Assault rifle and shotgun.
Adepts play it close to the enemy.

GPS is just awesome. i never use shotguns in any shooters i play except for the GPS. i simply see no reason to use anything else in ME2. .............or i hear alot of good things about the mattock, but i dont enjoy semiauto rifles. the GPS is great because it puts out alot of damage inbetween using your biotics, even at range, and my bullets seem to follow my enemies alot too.

The GPS isn't a typical shotgun, it's great at mid range where adepts usually fight the best.
