To set the record straight:

1) Those who said Gaxkang was "too easy" -- what difficulty were you playing at? If you played nightmare - hats off to you. If you played on Easy/Normal/Hard, of course the game will be too easy. I wish there was an option to "lock" difficulty when creating a character and tie achievement to it (there aren't achievements for difficulty because casual players are expected to ramp down difficulty for boss fights). Secondly, a 5th difficulty would be interesting (perhaps require one full walkthrough).

Honestly, Nightmare isn't that much harder.  First time, I played through on hard.  Second time, I played halfway through, thought the game was too easy, and went to change the difficulty--turns out I was already on nightmare (I had switched to nightmare to play through an origin and left it that way).  Gaxxkang just isn't a terrifically hard fight--he's just a revenant with some spells.  Not that revenants are easy when you first run into them, but if you can handle them you can handle him.

I went back to the hovel and gave him the smackdown last night. Yeah, not as hard as the high dragon. The first time I think I was too low level. I beat him with my main at 18.

I was rather expecting an insta-death spell with makes party members go puff forever and him being a flying skull, but you can't have everything...

That BG2 fight in the Docks District took me by surprise. It was Epic. That and the house that opens when a Rogue Stone is carried in the inventory. All the sudden, there are liches everywhere casting. BG had some scary 'surprises.' In Dragon Age, I haven't experienced a WTF moment, where death is inevitable because I broke in to the creepy house.

My favorite part of this quest was the line 'Witness Gaxkang!'

LOL yeah, I never played BG2 so I didn't get the reference, he said that in his rather nondescript human guise and I was like, "uh, OK dude."  Then he uncapped the whoopass.
For those wondering how to trigger this, I do believe the codex pieces you need to gather come from nervous adventurers and/or random corpses in other places (I know of one corpse you have to loot in the Urn room, and an adventurer in Tapsters... can't remember where the others were).  Then you'll get a quest saying to go talk to someone in Denerim.
