So we all know Varric gets much love, for many reasons, and rightfully so.
I'm wondering how everyone likes to spec him.
I tend t have a lot in Sabotage and Scoundrel for support purposes. The only downside is it leaves either Bianca tree or Marksman tree kinda lacking...
Do you guys prefer spport Varric or Ranged DPS varric. Whats your favorite abilities?
Your Favorite Varric build.

I max out his Marksman special tree, pick up blindside, armistice, and goad from the scoundrel tree, and finish off with the Bianca tree.
So ranged I suppose.

For my recent mage playthrough I had sabotage, bianca, and marksman with a pinch of specialist.
His main job was to set up disorient CCCs via fatiguing fog/confusion and to archer's lance brittle enemies. Other than that he was just ranged dps - aided by the marksman tree and specialist trees. He dealt pretty solid damage given that all attribute points were into dex and cunning (30 cun +increase lockpicking ring). Didn't really see the need for any scoundrel abilities besides blindside or any point in completely filling up his marksman tree. As long as you manage threat well (for my mage I just get hawke and aveline to pick up as much threat as possible) the support from armistice/goad etc isn't necessary, though brand could be handy.
So I would say he was mostly a ranged DPS build unless you count setting up CCCs as support. I'm going to use this same build for the S&S build I'm doing as it worked pretty well.
Fav abilities would have to be all those sustains/passives in his marksman tree followed by fatiguing fog. Despite the large numbers, I somewhat dislike archer's lance and tolerate it as a necessary evil - can't count the number of times I've had him stick a lance into a companion...

I'm going for a full ranged party build for my third playthrough, doing something similar to Arelex's glass cannon build. So I'm going to have Varric built for versatility through setting up disorient CCC's, bursting arrow to follow up brittles and his personal tree for the umph! Probs only going to grab blindslide unless he personally lacks survivability or stam regen.
Could I get some comments on how effective Confusion is? I'd prefer to get my disorient CCC earlier than level 13. Would you say it's a good substitute for Fatiguing Fog until I get to level 13 and have enough points to respec for it? The friendly fire isn't going to be an issue for me but the 50/50 chance against normals is the part that is bothering me. I probably should stop being lazy and test it out myself to be honest, meh.
Edit: Oh and my favourite build so far was the one I used on my 2hd warrior run; ability points into his personal tree, specialist and scoundrel. I built him to be a auto attack machine (also gave him the primeval lyrium rune, also stumbled across a glitch where you can activate both speed and precision hehe) whilst directing threat.

I had some questions on Varrics abilities.
How do Bursting shot and hail of arows work on NM. is FF an issue?
Blindside and Follow Through. Do they work for ranged and are they worth it?
Does pinning shot work for Disorient yet?

I build varric towards this: http://biowarefans.c...t1zoMkmR0EBDvlF
Pretty much ignore the archery tree since I play on nightmare. Bursting shot kills your people, hail of arrows kills your people, pinning shot never works on nightmare, archers lance will kill your people.

I go for Marksman, Sabotage depending on my Hawke, Bianca dependsing on my Hawke, Blindside from Scoundrel and Speed from Specialist.
If I need a Disorient setter I go more for Sabotage, If I need a Brittle Exploiter I go more for Bianca.

Depends on my class and what CCCs I want to use. But generally I'll max out Marksman at the very least, get Blindside and Goad. If I want to use Disorient combos, then I'll get Overpowering Fog. If I am using Brittle, then I get Punishing Lance and Shattering Arrow. So it just depends. I usually don't go with both Disorient and Brittle out of sheer laziness and because I always feel like I should put tons of points into their personal trees.

A mixture. First I max out his Marksman and Bianca trees, then I give him some support abilities.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I'm kinda undecided on Fatiguing Fog. I'm playing a BM/FM/Primal Hawke wth fenris for mass stagger and anders as support with some dps thrown in. I'm thinking its maybe no worth a huge point investment from both Varric and anders for a disorient combo. Its to bad pinning shot isn't reliable. That culd be a nice easy way to set up a combo.

Fatiguing Fog is great for all the things it does. Obscuring teammates makes them dodge alot of attacks, slows down attackers and disorientates for golemfist combo. Ideal for improving the survivability of enemies attacking a warrior tank.

Have I mentioned you're awesome yet? No? Well, you're awesome.
I never have to worry about a tactics question - just find your threads and I'm set.

I give him all of Bianca minus Hail of Arrows or its upgrade, or Bursting Arrow's upgrades (I can't seem to get its CCC to work... or it just does crappy damage). All of Marksman, minus Kickback or its upgrade, or Overtime. Also some Sabotage, some Scoundrel, some Specialist, and Stealth.

I use three active offensive skills on nightmare: Pinning Shot, Triplets and Kick-Back.
The rest goes into passive skills, one buff and some defensive talents like Stealth and Evade.
This is how I usually skill Varric:
1. Prescision
2. Blindside
3. Pinning Shot
4. Stealth
5. Evade
6. Subtlety
7. Rhyming Triplets
8. Kickback
9. Bianca's Song
10. Back-to-Back
11. Follow-Through
12. Well-Oiled
13. Bianca's Song Upgrade
14. Overtime
15. Rhyming Triplets Upgrade
16. Kickback Upgrade
17. Pinning Shot Upgrade: Rapid Pinning Shot
18. Speed
19. Power
20. Harmony
21. Speed Upgrade 1 (I buff Speed now, attack is long maxed and crit pretty high, too)
22. Speed Upgrade 2
23. Evade Upgrade
24. Stealth Upgrade: Camouflage

Here is my Varric build (not in order of course)
biowarefans.com/dragon-age-2-talent-builder/
I tend to go for the same skills every time, but the order I get them depends on what companions I'm using.
If I have Aveline or SnS Hawke I get the disorient CCC a lot sooner than with Mage Hawke for example. Conversely I tend to get the archery skills sooner when Hawke is a mage because Brittle always comes before Walking Bomb. Varric is always my super fast attacking archer at heart though... Bianca's Song + Upgrade and Well Oiled are always picked ASAP
I manually initiate the Archery (Bianca) talents though... I can never get the tactics right to minimize FF enough.
