I had to re-start a game because Liara stated that she liked femshep but also knew that femshep was with Kaiden. WTF? My Shep wanted to scream "Kaiden? I don't even understand what the crap he is talking about! I want you dammit! Not wimpy biotic with a headache boy!" Image IPB

Now my Ash/Liara play was rough ... Shep was talking to Liara and Ash came barging in, shot Liara between the eyes and said "Now who is the short-lived species now, ****." Image IPB

Choose negative or neutral options and when/if she hits on you say no? There's always an opportunity before the escape from the Citadel to reject whoever your love interest is.

Can't understand the problem myself, Liara is a fantastic character and the drama she and Kaidan/Ash cause while totally unrealistic given the circumstances really added something to each of the romances overall.

I'm currently trying to play a polite paragon Shep, listening to Kaidan's stories about brain camp has to be the worst thing about playing paragon. Then he thinks Shep fancies him just because she was polite to him. Why can't Shepard just politely tell him she plays for the other team? If he tries anything funny he's getting Virmired again.

to each their own when it comes to character likes. so lets not insult each others preferences, especialy as I just personaly picked up my Liara playthrough again and I don't want to be turned off from it again and wish wistfuly that Liara didn't have such plot armor and was a virmire option instead, by some of the more overzealous haters of other ME1 romances.

as for Kaidan liking you just because you are polite - he likes renegades too. you can even change some of his views asa  femshep. he cannot help it that Shepard is so hot, that he just falls in love, especially when she keeps coming around and listening to his stories and advice. unless you use specific key rejection phrases at specific time, yes, ME1 characters will fall in love with you even if you don't fall in love with them. it applies to all 3 of them (Ash does it too) - this is something that people complained about and that was fixed in ME2 and DAO (clearer romance starters and clearer rejection options that show up at any romance stage not just at the start)

so here's something a lot of you will appreciate I think - the way to get maximum dialog while locking out a romance you don't want to be having - instructions for all 3 characters

Virmire him. It's the safest way to go.

She asks you if there is somehing between kaidan and shepardt,if female, and shepardt and ashley, when male.If the player agrees, no romance path with liara.Plain and simple.

My renegade Shep never had a problem with Kaidan because she didn't try and be friends with him so he never got the chance to get the wrong idea (irl people can think chatting is flirting so it isn't unrealistic really) he instead made a comment about Liara and Shep said "remember I saw her first" which was not what I expected from what was written but it worked.
Liara is just as bad as Kaidan for thinking Shep fancies her, but I like her so I don't mind (yes I know I'm shallow).

I never had a problem with that.

If you pay attention to the dialogue, it is pretty easy to turn down all the LIs.

I had 2 start a playthrough over cus I accidentily romanced Liara!

I did, too.  I had already played through about half the game when I got a dialogue with her where all three options were basically "OMG I LOVE U!!11!!"  I was trying to remain unromanced for the whole game, so I had to start all over.  I'm still bitter about it. :P

Liara asks if you are interested in an early dialog...you choose the middle option and tell her you just want to be friends and she leaves you alone from there on in....she is the easiest to deal with, you gotta dodge romance bullets with Ash.

So when Liara asks you if your interested in her and you choose the neutral option, she will drop the romance completely and you don't have to worry about it for the rest of the game?

reposting here, for people who don't like to click links I guess

1. For Kaidan and Ashley, their first convo (the post-Eden Prime chat and the Citadel chat don't count) will have an option which turns the romance off for good.

-Ashley: tell her that she's out of line when she comments that it might not be a good idea to allow the alien crewmembers full access to the ship. It's a single middle-left option on the wheel. Shepard will ask her if she always second-guesses her superiors. Yes, it's a little harsh, but a Shepard who isn't romancing her (ie. has no reason to be conciliatory with her) would realistically remind her of her place in a situation like that, because, well, she is out of line. You'll have the same convos with her as a FemShep would from then on, and interrupting her call with her sister will have the sister commenting that Kaidan is cute, rather than MaleShep. She'll also be calling you "Commander" rather than "skipper" at the end of her convos.

-Kaidan: definitely harsher than Ashley, but still the best option to let him down easy. In his first convo, he'll talk about his past for a bit, and then he'll say something along the lines of "sorry if I'm rambling". Pick the bottom-right option to have Shepard tell him that she "gave up waiting for the good part". Kaidan will apologize and never hit on her again. You'll have the same conversations with him as a MaleShep would from then on. He'll also be ending convos with "Commander" rather than "I'd like that".

2. Liara is a bit of a trap. Her turn-down is completely unambiguous, but getting to it is counterintuitive. And the problem is, you HAVE to turn her down to be completely safe: I've heard some people complaining about romancing her even though they only spoke to her once. So during your first convo with her, pick personal topics: she'll get embarrassed about studying you. Now this already makes it obvious that she's interested: I can understand why people wouldn't want to bring up personal topics after that. However, you HAVE to pick personal topics again for your second convo with her. She'll confirm her interest, and ask if there's something between you and Kaidan/Ashley. If you're not romancing them, pick the middle-right option to say that they're just friends. Liara will then ask if there's something between you and her: again, pick the middle-right option to have Shepard say "I'm not interested in you in that way". She'll be embarrassed again, but you can speak to her safely after that. She'll also be calling you "Commander" rather than "Shepard".

I've never had a problem with this except for a minor incident with Ashley that was easily corrected. Even with you accidentally ninjamancing someone due to deceptive dialogue options shouldn't you still run into the love triangle scene where you get to choose the one you want? It only works if you have the first or later patches installed and you have to be romancing your preferred NPC but the love interest confrontation scene seems the most straightforward decision scene possible.

Silly people.

Because she looks like my little sister.  That is so far beyond gross I can't even describe it.

The best and most foolproof way to check your romance status with someone is to simply listen to their farewell after speaking with them. This is from someone who has played through at least 5 times and romanced 4 of those times.

Liara
Romance: "Shepard."
Non-Romance: "Commander."

Ashley
Romance: "Skipper."
Non-Romance: "Sir."

Kaidan
Romance: "I'd like that."
Non-Romance: "Commander." (I think)

I encountered the "conflict" by accident when I did the romance dialogue with Liara and talked to Ashley 3 times to the point where she started calling me "Skipper." It happened immediately after a briefing (those moments after finishing a story mission where you have the option of speaking with the Council, etc). Also, the person that visits your locker after the Normandy is grounded is basically your locked romance option. So yeah, just check their farewells after speaking with them and that should be your romance indicator. Hope that helps for a future playthrough! :)
