"So basically they couldn't spot a mage if it set them on fire." LOL

How do I answer this to a friend that was asking about DA?

I think the only answer is "yep, you nailed it."

You tell him he should overlook the gameplay, and focus on the fact that Templars can spot mages lorewise.

Source?
As far as I'm awere templars can't tell mages from normal people if they have no phylactery/don't cast spells.

I was refering to the fact that you can cast spells in-game right in front of the Templars. And they don't try to arrest you for it.
However, if you did lorewise, they would try and arrest you. Or kill you.

She knows he is an apostate. Hawke just got too much political power to kill or imprison immediately.

The whole point of the expedition was to get enough money to hide behind. It seems to me that the Templars are corrupt enough that they can be bribed to look the other way. Then you get enough status to cause a political problem if you were to be taken away by the Templars.

My justification: Gascard DuPuis. This bothered me, that, even though the Templars found nothing, he's still obviously a mage (unless he was always an apostate), but evidently had enough noble clout that Merridith had to write a personal apology to him.

My theory, anyway.
Honestly, the Templars are pretty bloody incompetent without a Mage Hawke running around the city.

Actually, lorewise, the templars ended up killing the charlatan named the Magnificient D'Sims because they thought he was a mage, when he was pretending to heal the sick.

He scammed the sick.
The Templars could very possibly have known he wasn't a mage, and yet killed him on principle.

So the templars can murder people with impunity, simply because they feel it's justified?

They are allowed to kill apostates. He pretended to be an apostate, while he was scamming the sick. If he put on a convincing act, the Templars have full authority to kill him. If they saw through it, they could kill him for being a scammer. While not allowed, I doubt a lot of people would complain.

If the templars can't discern that D'Sims wasn't a mage, then it means they can't automatically tell when a person is actually a mage or not.

The templars, mages, Orsino, Meredith, Eltina, the Viscount, Petrice, Grace, Mahetari, And Hawke. In this game, they are all stupid and incompetent.

When did I say that the automatically can? I said that they investigate, and do find hiding mages. And when they don't act at all to your spellcasting in DA2, it is because of gameplay.
And as I said, perhaps the Templars were fully aware of D'simms not being a mage.

I'm addressing what Jugo616 points out, that templars can't distinquish between mages and non-mages unless the mage uses magic or the templars have a phylactery.

I love when Knight Commander Cullen says "Mages aren't like you and I" I'm like, "ummm dude.."

to be fair to EA/BW, to have a truly realistic portrayal would have taken another year or so in development etc..

Can you throw fireballs? No? Then you aren't like a mage.

Emp, I'm pretty sure that Trefalen was just saying that particular Hawke could indeed throw fireballs. ;)

If his Hawke was an apostate, then Cullen was telling this to a mage.

lets face it, theres just no defending some of this games many flaws. The game is substandard and the above comment 'overlook the gameplay' in terms of the games story foundations (mage v templar, templar doesnt arrest, or even question either hawke, anders, merril, bethany when they walk through gallows with staff and robe) is unacceptable considering 'gameplay' is the core selling point of a GAME
Pains me to say this game is pretty @#/?

I got it, mages have Force Magic. They must wave their hands and say "these are not the mages you are looking for".
