I am unable to disarm traps with just high cunning. It seems you need to have at least the first lockpick to disarm traps. Can anyone confirm?

I can confirm you're wrong, does that help? :)

Discobird, regarding traps, doesn't this

int Trap_GetModifiedScore(object oCreature)
{
float fAbility = 0.0f;
if (HasAbility(oCreature, ABILITY_SKILL_LOCKPICKING_1))
fAbility += 1.0f;
if (HasAbility(oCreature, ABILITY_SKILL_LOCKPICKING_2))
fAbility += 1.0f;
if (HasAbility(oCreature, ABILITY_SKILL_LOCKPICKING_3))
fAbility += 1.0f;
if (HasAbility(oCreature, ABILITY_SKILL_LOCKPICKING_4))
fAbility += 1.0f;
fAbility *= ROGUE_SKILL_BONUS;

Mean you get 5 "disarm" points per deft hands skill? Since ROGUE_SKILL_BONUS = 5?
Perhaps I missed something though.
Also you don't seem to mention the level bonus which is also there.

But where is Trap_GetModifiedScore() called? As far as I can tell, there are only two places that plausibly handle trap disarmament--Placeable_HandleUsed() in placeable_h.nss and UT_SkillCheck() in utility_h.nss--and both of them call GetDisableDeviceLevel() in core_h.nss to determine the player's disarm score.

Its a pity i didnt read this before,Wow, thats awesome, thx

Now I realize i messed up my dwarven rogue XP

If you are going for a ranger rogue, i recommend you to try a mod in the DragonNexus forums. It makes possible to backstab with bows, provided you are close enough ( and another cool features. like poisoning the arrows too). I made a very fun ranger-bard rogue archer ( Ranger duelist seems to work too, the duelist sustained ability works with ranged weapons too). You can put all your points in cunning and dex, if you learn letality.

Ah another thing i noted, it seems that you can throw vials to enemies without being noticed (at stealth rank 2-3). I managed to use four-five into some mobs and they dont see me, if you dont get hit by the explosion, only atacks seem to broke stealth.

Is there a similar (awesome) analysis of the rogue specs? Like how lacerate and Feast of the Fallen works? I think most of the other specs have been analyzed in Disco's dps thread, but I could have missed them.

I like the code-fu of Disco and some others, or I would try and find it myself...

 Thank you very much for this tasty little tidbit of mechanics breakdown.  Excellent work!

It seems that the only thing this game was missing was some sort of in-game documentation for a guideline of what a player should follow to achieve the maximum effectiveness of their characters.  I just recently bought DA for myself and have started with a rogue (as I do in every other game) and am looking forward to building my tank rogue!

I was poking around over at Youtube and found a video someone had ripped from the collectors edition of DA of a video explaining the how-to for building the 2 completely different builds of rogues one may choose.  You can watch that video here:

I have played the game 3 times now (twice with Leliana as my rogue), and she seems to unlock all chest (60 xp chest) and disarm every trap with cunning of 29 (maybe as low as 27) and Mechanical Expertise. This is on the PS3, so I'm not sure if this will help others but this helps you to sink all her points into Dexterity if you don't use her Bard songs.

What attributes/abilities contribute to being able to detect traps?

So by the looks of it, if you're going for a cunning based rogue then you don't need any points in the deft hands talent, since you'll have more than 60 points in cunning anyway right?

Very often, when I steal and receive the message "Stealing Success" I receive no items and no gold. I have thoroughly tested this. Does this mean it is actually a failure? I have the XBox 360 version and all the optional updates if any of it applies. Any shedding of light on this would be much appreciated.

Wow, I didn't know I should use Stealth while Stealing! Thanks for the tip.

I have 37 Cunning and 3rd rank in Deft Hands, so my lock-picking score should be 57, right? The only chest I can't open ("Insufficient skill") so far is on the fourth floor of the circle tower. It must be a "60" chest? I'll have to go back there when I get my score to 60 (or is it above 60?).

OK, I got my cunning to 43 (so 63 is my lock score), and now I was able to unlock that chest. Wasn't worth the trip, though! Another mage staff and a document! :(

I don't know if this has affected anyone, but my Rogue with Master Stealth, will break stealth if he comes within range of Rally Ability from a Champion warrior.

I can stealth while in range of the ability, but if I leave the 10 yard range and then try to come back to the party it kicks me out of stealth.

Not sure why, and it's nothing that can't be fixed with tactic changes, but it was a bit surprising when it first happened. I tend to range ahead with my rogue and check for traps, pull mobs with my tank and bring my rogue back in for an initial backstabby duel weapon sweep.

I went way early to Denerim (first time I got to camp), to find Gorim. Because I had points in Stealing and Stealth, Slim Couldry gave me his first 3 quests. But ever since then, he always says "I'm lining up the next big score, but the opportunity hasn't presented itself. Go hang out in the brothel!", even though I now have 2 ranks in Stealing and all 4 ranks in Stealth. (Steal score is 63 if Stealthed).

Do I need to be higher level? (I was 12 last time I asked him). Or more Stealing ranks, even though I don't need them with Cunning and Stealth?

Double check the formula...with no talents allocated to locks you need 70 cunning to open everything

Just an update to Disco's excellent post.

The chance to drop stealth while using an item ability with Stealth 2 or higher is a flat 10%. This includes setting traps and throwing bombs. It is not adjusted by cunning.

For people who like to look at the code, the check is done in the ability_core.nss.  Starting on line 387.

Edit - cut the code snipe out due to formatting.

Just a note on lockpicking skill.

I had 41 cunning and 2 points in deft hands and I could open every chest in the game up to the landsmeet (I started dropping more points into cunning at that point so can't confirm beyond that).
