in the stealing mechanic, is there something about the item stolen?

I mean, if my rogue is great at stealing, can I steal a better item?

Soooooo, I am trying to optimise a dex/cun build rogue. I can determine how much I need for lock picking, trap disarmament, coercion and stealth, however stealing has me at a loss. Obviously it is all dependant on level differentiation between the PC & the enemy, along with the mental resistance of the enemy. Considering this, does anyone know what the highest 'level' creature we face? Alternatively, what is the highest NPC we come across, because I am not too bothered about combat stealing.

Basically I am trying to determine if I can get away with just one rank of stealing with high enough cunning, or if it's better to get 2-3 with high cunning.

Check 'Stealing: Profitable Targets' at the DAO Wiki; list of who, what, and how much Cunning total is required.

However, I tried to loot Duncan yesterday, and the best I could do was gain a Ruby or Emerald; no runes appeared at all after many attempts.

Unfortunately, there are too many unknown variables to come up with a set number that will allow you to steal from everyone. The best you can do is pump Cunning, Stealing, and Stealth for maximum chances.

A question regarding the lockpicking mechanic (unlocking chests/doors). According to previous posts in the thread, the Deft Hands talents merely lower the Cunning requirement needed to pick locks and such. So, going by that, is the ability to unlock doors and chests a Rogue-only ability? Or is it possible to build a Warrior/Mage with 70+ Cunning that can unlock such?

I am a bit late to the party, but can anyone confirm if gear affects the roll or not? Thanks!!

Nevermind! Looks like I answered my own question during a Very Hard persuasion check: gear/equipment cunning bonuses do affect your coercion skill, so you can only assume that it transfers over to picking locks too.

Can you detect traps with no points in the trap skill?

Yes.  Confirmed by myself.

Minor note: for detection purposes only, the player gets a +10 bonus to his disarm score if he is under the effect EFFECT_TYPE_TRAP_DETECTION_BONUS. I have no idea what, if anything, grants this effect. It doesn't seem like the trap-making skills or lockpicking talents grant this effect, nor do any other spells or talents. Maybe it's just unused.

I know this was some time ago written and maybe someone said it already but I did not see it.  However, I just wanted to respond with the information that:  Trap Detection is part of the Detect Stealthed category and this bonus is given when you use an item called Incense of Awareness.  I know the description does not say it like it should, but I verified that it does add +10 to my Stealth Detection as well as +10 to Defense.  That explains why the -10 Mental Resistance is a good tradeoff while using it.  Otherwise, +10 defense is not worth it as I can get that permanent with 2 points in Dex.
