...call Anders 'mage' and yet does nothing to bring him in? Is there some conversation I've missed? Is he allowing Anders some kind of immunity for being allied with me? What is going on here?

Why does Hawke get an option that says "Hey! I'm a mage!". Yet she says "I have friends who are mages."?

My FemHawke is a rogue for now, so let's go one step at a time.

Sis, i'm afraid that that is the majority of DA2. Way too many WTF moments(which I can't really go into without spoiling).

I may actually have to chase this all the way to a story staff member person. I need to know what the hell is going on OR be given a good enough lie.

Because Anders *spoilers* a *spoiler*. And Cullen is a total *spoiler*, and he's SO *spoiler* that he let's *spoiler* stay *spoiler*, because *spoiler* is a jackass.

Yeah. Anders blows up a church.

That's in act 3 or something or at least further on than I am. SO. Still doesn't explain it.

Just yes or no: did he already blow up a chantry? OR BETTER QUESTION: Does it even come close to explaining why he knows him as a mage?

Anders and Merrill are protected by Hawkes status and Varric. With Hawke, the Viscount and Cullen intervened to keep Hawke out so Hawke could get her status back. It's not rocket science people.

Kirkwall works different then Ferelden, a mage can live outside the tower if they have status and protecting the city.

My Hawke is not a mage, for the second time and if what you say is true then why are other templars hunting Anders by this point? I see flaws in this argument.

Because Cullen is a badass.

Happy? Because I am.

You seem to think all Templars are the same, which is not the case. Cullen is in fact a bad Templar because he does let things go if it helps the city, Ander(at this itme anyways) was helping the city with his clinic and his relonship with Hawke. Some Templars however are hunting Anders because they think mages are teh evilz!.

I assume Anders is still seen as a warden, but then again it is strange to see cullen calling anders a mage during act 2 without any problems.

It's really mind-blowing when YOU are a mage.  I am always endlessly frustrated during that first fight where you meet Cullen as he's questioning Wilmod, the templar-recruit-turned-demon.  So you go running up, the recruit turns into a demon, you start flinging spells around.  And Cullen just nonchalantly shrugs and complains about how he normally expects mages to go batty-possessed, not templars, and oh would you be willing to visit the brothel and investigate for the order, hmm?

Hey, I literally turned to my hubby and said, "Okay, I don't get it.  Shouldn't he be dragging my butt to the Gallows now?"  I mean, even my little brother is like, "He's the Knight-Captain!"  It's completely weird.

Anyway, I tend to play it out, in my head canon, that since you're doing work or favors for the Order, Cullen somehow agrees to look the other way.  Becoming Champion cements the Order's refusal to drag your Apostate butts off to the Gallows.  I figure all those Kirkwall nobles you saved from the Arishok would be outraged if the Templars took you away, once you become their Hero.  Meredith even says so to Anders during Act 3, that his friendship with the Champion is the only thing that allows him leeway.  Honestly, it's the only way it makes any bit of sense to me, shrug.

Oooooooooh yes.

I managed to plant chips in the brains of all the templars (and some squirrels), which is why I got away with ker'sploding several hundred of them during my brutal campaign to world domination.

Why should he? It's not hard to put two together, more so when Bran has used the Clinic. Almost everyone knows Anders runs the clinic.

Stop making assumptions about what I think.

Cullen never told me he lets mages who help the city be. SO. This is obviously the missing conversation which has led to my confusion. Meredith is still Cullen's superior so any leniency on his behalf will still seem weird.

Look, I can use emboldened text too.

P.S. Who the heck is Bran?

Because Cullen knows he'll get decapitated touching one of the Champion's companions.

Like...the Champion totally decapitated him when he took Bethany. That was so awesome. Cullen was like all "Sheltering illegal apostates, are we? Well, off to rape/lobotomy/demon central." And Hawke was like: "Over my dead body!" And then it was all tense...

and then Hawke politely nods, and steps aside. Oh. Wait. Yeah.
