Like...the Champion totally decapitated him when he took Bethany. That was so awesome. Cullen was like all "Sheltering illegal apostates, are we? Well, off to rape/lobotomy/demon central." And Hawke was like: "Over my dead body!" And then it was all tense...

and then Hawke politely nods, and steps aside. Oh. Wait. Yeah.

That is because Hawke doesn't like Bethany, isn't that obvious? He just had to act tough in front of his mom. I mean, when Bethany first comes out from the circle and you haven't seen her in years, the confrontation was so awkward. They barely said two words to each other. Obviously Hawke was happy to see them haul her off.

Since both Cullen and Anders are from the Fereldan circle, they likely know each other. And, it's possible that Cullen knows that Anders became a Warden, which gives him a pass.

No explanation for Hawke-as-mage, of course, or why Cullen would let Merrill pass, assuming he acknowledges (or knows) that she's a mage.

Well, when you talk to Meredith in the final conversation of "Loose Ends", and don't argue that it's the templar's fault, Anders will go on a rant. Meredith then explains to Anders that "Your friendship with the champion has kept you safe, but it has its limits" (or something along those lines, I don't remember the direct quote). As was said before, things appear very different in the Free Marches - they appear much more corrupt than Ferelden, if bribes from smugglers and mercenaries can get refugees into a "closed" city.
Of course, this is after Hawke becomes Champion - who really wants to challenge the man/woman who took down the Arishok? :? As for before the Deep Roads, I'm pretty sure Meeran/Athenril kept Hawke/Bethany safe, and in Act II, the Viscount depends on Hawke to negotiate with the Arishok, and likely made some sort of deal with the templars. Hawke's got ties to the nobility and the guard, and lots of money in a corrupt city. I don't think they ignore Hawke and co. so much as tolerate them.
Or I might just be rationalizing. Who knows. :P Anyway, hope that this helped lessen the grumpy for you, LyndseyCousland. :D

Also, Alistair lover94, I think Hawke's reasoning for only mentioning "friends" who are mages is in the whole "So, hypothetically I have a friend, who totally isn't me, who..." theme. Hinting at his/her sympathies without being able to be arrested on the spot. That, and it reduces the amount of lines the actor needed to record. ;)

...call Anders 'mage' and yet does nothing to bring him in? Is there some conversation I've missed? Is he allowing Anders some kind of immunity for being allied with me? What is going on here?

Theory: Cullen knew him from the Fereldan Circle thus knew Anders is Houdini? (Meh, he'll just escape again, leave him be.) ...?
