Update: Added runs of Dissent, Varterral, Varnell, and a special video from Jack Nader, saying goodbye to 1.02 (May 31st)

Nothing says 'I'm a bad motherf**ker' like clearing one of the toughest fights in the game in 30 seconds. However, beyond simply showing off, watching speed runs can give you some insight into what, exactly, it takes to dominate and clear quickly on Nightmare, a good place to pick up tips from.

With that in mind, my arch-nemesis (and occasional lover) Jack Nader and I are teaming up to bring you a speed run challenge thread. We'll be recording the same missions at the same level, playing for speed, and sharing the results with with you all, so you can learn how to make the toughest fights look easy!

Why another thread? There's a lot of text guides on here already, and no matter how good (mine) or bad (mr afk) they are, for the information to really turn on the lightbulbs in people's minds sometimes, you need video to go along with the text, so I'll be posting both of our videos, and we'll be answering questions as they come.

When does the slap-fight commence?

This requires a recliner for maximum viewing enjoyment. And a Coke. Or a pint of Guinness. Or a Jamison on the rocks.

Speed isn't everything, you know. You should have included your Vanguard vs. ARW video, because it is more... heroic, if not more effective.

Slap fight will start once we get around to Mage, and I suggest a few Landsharks on a sunny day.

A DW rogue will actually complete that fight faster than an archer rogue. I will upload a second video comparing the two builds.

Mind blown. Can't wait to see more. /drool

That was an excellent view on both sides. Though I am surprised by how much the Archer looked like she didn't break a single sweat.

So we'll have to wait a bit longer for that vid then *disappointed sigh*

Nice work guys.

Nice! I just was thinking about requesting a speed-run thread!
I didn't know it was possible to kill the ARW so fast - it always transforms into the armoured rolling around stage and chases me around for ages, almost invincible to damage..

Btw, you probs can't record it now but what's a good time for the Night Lies fight? I managed to get ~1:05 with my unoptimised (no maker's sighs) party.

You're just too pro..why do i even bother trying to compete with you? haha

Yeah, i meant beating in the future tense. As in i'm almost up to it with my latest build which i think is superior damage-wise. I dont think ive seen anyone speedrun the dragon with a warrior hawke :)

I'll make you a deal, mr afk. I'll do the dragon again as a warrior, and if I beat your time, in your video, where it says 'nightmare builds', you have to put mr afk is the worst player. If you beat mine, you shall forever on be known as the greatest player in the universe

Hm, I'm happy to accept the deal if you do it as a 2H (so our builds are actually different) and if i manage to beat 28seconds in the first place..it'll be totally worth it just to force you to have to have to redo the speed run again hahaha.

28 seconds for night lies

I've been thinking about how to get 28 seconds with night lies and I might have another go at it (respeccing my companions so they actually do more than autoattack). Not having permanent haste/anders casting martyr or decent fire spells/chain lightning CCCs probably slowed things down for me a lot in all the fights ive recorded. :(

Note that in every video you put out, it must say 'mr afk is the worst player', riiiight at the start. I'd actually watch your videos just to see that!

heh, that's really not much of a worry, no one would believe that once they see me in action! ;)

and btw, it seems that my new setup is working much better in Night Lies. I'll see if I can get close to 28secs :/
blah, cbf, it's giving me a headache. I would like to see how it's even possible to do in 28secs... I don't think they even spawn that fast!

You're not going to beat 28 seconds with your current party. Ditch the warrior and switch to rogue and you have a chance.

For Night Lies or the Deep Roads Dragon? Or both? haha
But yeah, I know what you mean. While the S&S spike damage is probably the second best (after rogues) they lack some of the consistent dps, especially early-game before they can get far into their specs (which is where the real damage potential is at).

I did the deep roads dragon in around ~1min with my non-optimised party - I'm seeing how well I can do without maker's sighs/preparing specifically for fights. It also is allowing me to be slightly more stingy money-wise which will be useful later on.
I think i'm going to use my first maker's sigh to respec Varric into an archer's lance - the brittle CCC should reduce my time by quite a bit. On another note i'm struggling a little with all those stupid stuns/force effects the dragon inflicts. It's pretty silly to miss out the brief window of a hex of torment simply because the dragon yawns. blehh I'll try again - hopefully I'll be able to knock it down further.

Either way it's already a lot faster than Arelex's Three Minute Deep Roads Dragon Fight ahahaha

All of the boss fights are going to be slower without rogue hawke. You have to take into consideration buff times, walking time and the fact that the warrior must take a lot of damage first inorder to truly shine. All of that bleeds a lot of time.

Depends how you define 'boss' fights. For all the fights with one or two rogue/mage 'bosses' a S&S will be just as fast or faster than a rogue. E.g. if you look at the second compilation I listed, lots of those fights were almost over before they started due to the huge aoe damage potential of scatter and assault. Additionally, while a rogue can deal large amounts of damage just to have the enemy chug down a potion, a S&S can just keep the enemy permanently interrupted and never give it the chance to escape.

But yeah - getting damaged is actually part of my new strategy. Instead of dodging all the dragons attacks I'm going to let myself get fried for a bit. The good thing about warriors is the way they hold threat quite well. It means all the baby dragons/big dragon stays out in the open while my ranged companions can sit back in relative safety. Only annoying thing is that for some odd reason Varric's archer's lance won't trigger. I've made sure he has enough stamina and the tactics are pretty simple (enemy: brittle: archer's lance) so the only thing I can think of is that he is sitting too far back to take the shot. Stupid varric...

edit: Ran out of batteries. <_< I really need to find a better way to record things
