It was Fallout NV that got me thinking about it, that series probably has my favourite ambience (A word you could use instead of 'atmosphere' to avoid the jokes) of any setting. I was thinking that you have a reason to be good in Fallout, you're helping rebuild society, but if you remove the long-term consequences (by removing the future all together) what reason do you have to try and be good?
Just some idle musing on my part..

Oh man same here. The ocean and all it's glory. Fishing up treasure from the sea floor, flooded Hyrule and how it's inhabits adapted, sailing on top of the King. I really liked Wind Waker one of my favorite Zelda's.
I'm going to added Witcher2....now don't hurt me. But the world just feels so alive and fleshed out even random mobs. Having to go to a monsters base to clear it out and destroy it's nest so your no longer basically jumped by 5+ enemies or seeing traps being laid down by npc's who are scared to leave a town. The npc schedules, the gorgeous graphics add to the setting.

I'm going to be a bit odd and go with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine after its first, rockiest season. The cast chemistry was stellar and every time they'd show Quark's bar, I practically felt like I was right there with everyone. That's atmosphere.

For that matter, I like where our technology is heading. I seriously hope we can shrug off the post modernism that has been ravaging our optimism about science and let post modernism stay where it should stay: arts and philosophy.

The most atmospheric game would be "Icewind Dale". Practically every map in that game tingled my imagination. Pinning down a book is much harder. My criteria when it comes to books is in how effectively an author's writing inspires mental images rather than my appreciation of what those images are. It makes choosing complicated.

And of course the simple D&D high fantasy setting of Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale.

Wind Waker's atmosphere was amazing and one of the best Zelda games(the best one being Majora's Mask).
