When I log in to my save before the final battle (I presume), the character is no longer even listed.

I admit... I had made backups of everything I even looked at, and restored them all. So I presume I did something wrong. Still no character.

I can't even load an older savegame.

Is there a file that controls listed characters? Some file type list or something?

What exactly do you mean by backup and restore and where did you restore the character backups to? For a standard install they should be under Documents(or MyDocuments)\\Bioware\\DragonAge2\\Characters. There should be a file folder for each character labeled with the name of the character. Those folders should contain a folder with all the saves, a jpg and a png image of the character and an xml file for that character. If any of those are missing or in the wrong location, the game will not see your character.

Yea ,the structure is alright...

Before opening a file, I make a copy and poke around. When I leave it, I delete the file and rename the copy back to the original... so it is exactly the same file.

I tried renaming a good chunk of save slots that would set me back a bit in the story, but still no luck.

I suspect you may have renamed something incorrectly.

Thanks, that is a valid diagnosis, but I've tried deleting the entire folders I changed files in...

Well, my lesson learned
